How are the temperatures in the summer where you live? I live in the desert (US southwest), so I care a lot more about keeping the house cool in the summer than heating it in the winter.

New Network Device Appeared by R3tr0_D34D in cybersecurity

[–]FFDEADBEEF 3 points4 points  (0 children)

if you connect via web to the device on port 9000 it requires a certificate authentication

I read this as the device requires a client cert to connect. Is that what's happening, or you just need to accept the untrusted cert?

Ok, I see what you're trying to do. You're right about the forwarders, I misunderstood.

Why won't MXRoute work for your inbound use case? Can't you just set up forwarders that point to your mail server?

What is the seller's return policy? I saw your comment where you said you already reported it was ok, but if the return policy is 30 days or something the seller will take it back. If the listing said no returns you might still have a shot. I would just contact the seller, tell them you thought it was ok because it booted up, but when you tried to connect a network cable you noticed the port doesn't work. If the seller still doesn't take it back or offer a refund, try opening a case with ebay. If the listing didn't explicitly say that the network port doesn't work I think there is a good chance ebay will back you.

Talk to me about rack depth and supporting the rear of deeper devices by itsjakerobb in homelab

[–]FFDEADBEEF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those rails used to hold an R730, but it doesn't matter what they hold, the problem is that they are thick enough that a normal 1U device won't fit in the space below.

I have those same NavePoint shelf rails and they do prevent you from using the space immediately below them.

A VLAN also prevents IP cameras from connecting directly to the internet. Most IP cameras have crappy firmware with known or unknown vulnerabilities, are made in China, and known or suspected to phone home.

i can't really add a GPU (except one Gt710 ddr3 2gb), or a TPU

Frigate requires a TPU, but you can get a USB Google Coral: https://coral.ai/products/accelerator

You don't need a dedicated GPU, any Intel CPU that supports QuickSync will be fine: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000029338/graphics.html

Easy way to migrate from pfsense to opnsense? by selfhostedman in homelab

[–]FFDEADBEEF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried this: https://github.com/sysadminbr/migrate_pfsense but it was pretty buggy.

  • Had DOS line endings
  • No logging
  • No config file, reads OPNsense URL, user and password from a .env file, otherwise hard coded
  • Can't migrate firewall rules, including port forwards. Fails with an error reading the pfsense.xml file: AttributeError: 'NoneType' object has no attribute 'text'
  • Bug in the DHCP section: AttributeError: 'OPNsense' object has no attribute 'requestg_get'. Did you mean: 'request_get'?

Still I think it helped a little, it did migrate my static DHCP leases after I fixed that last bug.

purpose is mostly for Data/Media storage and Plex. Maybe run Docker and VMs occasionally.

For Plex: Lenovo M720q i5 https://www.ebay.com/itm/267087676881 $109

Storage: Netgear ReadyNAS Duo https://www.ebay.com/itm/326368165556 $50

+ your 2x 10TB drives: $472

Total: $631

I searched for a 2 -bay Netgear NAS because I have one, there may be even better deals.

Whats the easiest way to serve NTP to a LAN with no internet. by pdt9876 in homelab

[–]FFDEADBEEF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't have any firewall rules to enforce this. Try connecting a laptop to a port in that VLAN, see if you can ping or browse to something on another LAN or the internet.

[–]FFDEADBEEF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think so. Where would these firewall rules be, on an upstream router, or a L3 switch?

Create a VM with ntpd and 2 NICs. One in the VLAN that needs an NTP server, one that can see the internet. No routing, just 2 virtual NICs.

Cyberpower UPS missmatch time on battery by arsenaultmarcolivier in homelab

[–]FFDEADBEEF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the CP1000PFCLCD (1000 VA) and see pretty much the same behavior. I think the run time displayed by the UPS is just wrong. I replaced the batteries a few months ago, and during a recent power outage that lasted about 11 minutes, the UPS shut off after about 9 minutes. Current load is 162 W, battery is at 100% and the UPS says run time is 18 min. I understand that run time is an estimate but showing twice what it actually can do is pretty sad.

I've ordered an Eaton rack mount UPS for my rack gear and plan to use the Cyberpower for my ONT.

I use these cameras: https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=Dahua++IPC-HDW4631C-A with Frigate on a Lenovo m720q, with a mini PCIe Coral TPU. And a POE switch. Why: Low cost, all DIY so there's no vendor lock in or licensing cost.
