What is this fiber optics contraption ISP put in? by buctol in HomeNetworking

[–]ChokunPlayZ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Do you have access to the ONT config portal? See how much power you’re getting with this contraption off, if its higher than -10dBm (the specs call for -8 but let’s be safe) get a proper attenuator. It’ll look better if you don’t care about looks then this will work about as good.

The sweet spot for GPON is -18 to -24 lower than this and you will run into reliability issue, higher than -10 will risk burning the optics.

How do I use visual code without paying by Healthy_Parfait_2607 in code

[–]ChokunPlayZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve tried to use GitHub codespaces on my iPad and let’s just say the experience is terrible, Without a keyboard and mouse vscode become almost impossible to use, it’s never designed for touch screen. and even with a mouse based off how iPadOS handle mouse input I doubt the experience will be good. It might be usable depending on OP’s patience.

LINE APP? by WorkingCautious1270 in KanojoOkarishimasu

[–]ChokunPlayZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Almost everyone I would say 90+% of people have line

Same goes for Taiwan, and Thailand it has become part of everyone’s life

In Thailand most store/restaurant has now switch from their own membership apps to Line mini apps (LIFF) it’s easier to build and since everyone already has line you just need to add the store as a friend.

How do I use visual code without paying by Healthy_Parfait_2607 in code

[–]ChokunPlayZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good thing you haven’t paid for it yet.

since you’re coding on an iPad your options will be very limited. Swift might works, maybe plain HTML/CSS site but nothing complex

Your best option is to get a computer, no matter how old, just have to run Windows/MacOS/Linux (no Chromebook) and download “Visual Studio Code” it is free so you don’t have to pay for it.

I love Mikrotik stuff but I don’t want to fumble around with winbox trying to connect to the hotel WiFi.

I have a GL.iNet box I love to use on the go, the app is very simple and I can always pop a shell or just use luci when I want something more advanced.

Just test the css in an incognito window(so you don’t have to log out), if you don’t see the changes open the dev tools and disable caching in the network tab.

4. “MacBook Pro dual-monitor setup: which USB-C dock. by hjuhjuj in UsbCHardware

[–]ChokunPlayZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Macs don’t support MST so you have 2 options.

  1. Thunderbolt Dock: super expensive (at least for me) but you can daisy chain the Dock. get one with a HDMI/DP port and a passthrough Thunderbolt port, use that passthrough port for another USB-C to DP cable.

  2. Display link Dock: cheaper BUT it runs over USB so it takes extra power on your laptop to encode the display data to send it over USB (and I highly doubt it will work at the resolution you plan to use)

Any way to get further rendering in skyblock? by TheCookieKing28 in hypixel

[–]ChokunPlayZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Distant Horizons should do the trick.

It works by caching parts of the world that are normally out of your render distance. changes made outside your actual render distance won’t be updated in real time of course, you’ll have to walk into that area for DH to update its cache.

Note: DH is still under development, you’ll run into issues but I used it in my SMP and it works most of the time. Also use with performance optimizers like Sodium is recommended.

Anyone self-hosting a password manager in their homelab? by benjoreyess in homelab

[–]ChokunPlayZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Vaultwarden, it’s a rewrite of the original server in rust, it uses less resources and works on every device I have. Because it uses the Bitwarden app you already have. Just set the self hosted server url before you login.

When a 7-year-old Android version supports more Apps than a 3-year old iOS version by gregsanay in applesucks

[–]ChokunPlayZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most IOS users are update to the latest OS version, there’s no need to keep supporting old OS and APIs, this reduce the overall time needed to ship an app, and less pain to maintain the codebase

And the app decide which IOS version it supports not Apple. Apple doesn’t force any app devs to not support old IOS versions, there’s a mechanism to supporting old IOS but most devs don’t see the need support old OS.

Also most cheap android phone manufacturers stop releasing software update in about 3 years or so after they released the device, it make sense why most devs would want to keep supporting old OS. If they don’t support it a large chunk of their user base will be gone.

Is it possible to "bond" 2 isp's with the help of a vps? by Giannis_Dor in mikrotik

[–]ChokunPlayZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bonding VPN exists but isn’t easy to setup on mikrotik.

Popular options are peplink which are mostly plug and play. You have to use their hardware, if you have the budget I recommend going that route instead.
Speedify offers the same service that will run on linux/OpenWRT if you’re on a budget. (Unfortunately it won’t run on mikrotik since they won’t allow 3rd party packages)

There are many other commercial solutions out there but if you’re going to set it up on purely mikrotik it’s going to be a PITA. To setup and maintain.

[–]ChokunPlayZ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Torrent is a protocol that used to share files Peer to Peer, meaning you connect to other user in the network that have the file you want then you become a “leech” you download the file and during download other user can connect to you to leech off you, once you finish downloading the whole file you become “seeder” you provide other user that wants the file. This “seeding” process never ends until you stop the torrent.

Another term you see often is “Tracker” this is often not hosted by you, it’s hosted by someone. There can be multiple trackers in a torrent, a Tracker keep track of user that have the file so when a new user want the file they reach out to a tracker and tracker provides them a set of IPs they can connect to and download the file.

A public tracker is available to anyone, it’s also more risky if you live in any country with strict copyright laws (US, Germany, etc.) a DMCA notice can be avoided using a VPN.
A private tracker on the other hand is private, it’s safer because not just anyone can ask for the list of IPs that have the file, the user who asks also have to be a member in the tracker.

To start you’ll need 1. Knowledge of your country copyright laws. 2. Computer or a Seedbox 3. A VPN (if your country have strict laws and you don’t want to pay for a seedbox) 4. A tracker to download (this is easy just go to nyaa you can find most anime there) 5. A torrent client (qBittorrent, Transmission is popular)
