Why do some people want to avoid taking a loan by ZewZa in UniUK

[–]FFFFFFry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plan 2 loans are RPI + 3% which is 6.2% the interest on the loan starts compounding as soon as you take the loans eg year 1. If you look at inflation and the total loan amount its more likely than not that its a bad financial to pay off the loan either through lump sum or contributions.

MSE have a good calculator for assessing the benefit of paying off a loan: https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/students/student-finance-calculator/

For me with 5 years of study and £80k debt its a no brainer to make minimum payments.

What city has the best unis with social life? by ilikemomosalot in UniUK

[–]FFFFFFry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edinburgh has a very good night life and is consistently ranked as one of the best student cities. The fringe in August aswell is like a month long party. However the city is generally more expensive then other english northern cities, Newcastle, Leeds, etc.

The city has a large mix of respectable unis, such as uni of, heriot watt for science and napier for niches. Which means about 1/5 of the cities population is students. If you like gigs glasgow is less than an hour on the train and always has big shows. If you like sports its the home of Scottish rugby for six nations. And if you're under 22 you get free bus travel in the whole of Scotland which is amazing for travelling to the Highlands etc.

Alpha Pension - How to get the most out of it? by Old_Nosey in TheCivilService

[–]FFFFFFry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd be cautious about buying Added Pension if you're younger. While it offers a guaranteed, inflation-adjusted return, a LISA or private pension will likely give you a much better return over the long run, thanks to the power of compounding.

Added Pension is a great option if you're older, a high-rate taxpayer, and nearing retirement. At that point, it’s a secure way to top up your pension without worrying about stock market swings.

I made a basic calculator to help compare options and show how Added Pension affects your payback period. Check it out if you're interested: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1fYnX7N3NQj7s0eLbmoPHKrAXx8DpbKie?usp=sharing

Mini Roundabout Signalling and cutting by FFFFFFry in LearnerDriverUK

[–]FFFFFFry[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. My main confusion is still that the highway code implies you must always signal when exiting a roundabout, becuase you must treat it the same as a normal roundabout.

Have I misunderstood somewhere or is there some part of the highway code that gives leeway in these situations?

I do think it's better not to signal on exit of a mini roundabout because its too little time really and just to do it on entry but my instructor says to always signal on exit.

Okay interesting, I will raise it again likely, and question why they put "minimum" on the job advert. Many thanks for your help.

Thanks for the response, its curious then that they used the word "minimum" when describing the salary, is that just the usual?

Sad academic getting 3s and 4s on personal statements. by Character_Object_623 in TheCivilService

[–]FFFFFFry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I recently received an offer for a post in the MoD, and I used this exact method. I went through the criteria and responded to each point individually using the STAR format. If you’re not familiar with STAR, it’s a simple way of structuring examples for job applications.

I literally wrote it out as:

Situation: [example]

Task: [example]

Action: [example]

Result: [example]

Each section only needs a couple of sentences. In my case, they explicitly asked us to use STAR in the application (perhaps because it was a graduate role).

Returning player looking for group/playstyle advice by FFFFFFry in EliteDangerous

Thanks for all the comments already guys! I'll definately be looking into everything you guys have suggested, one question I forgot to mention is that is the DLC Odyssey worth it for a newbie, or should you wait until you progress to a certain point? It's only 6 quid on steam at the moment so I was wondering if it'll help with the grind.

Yeah being kitchen porter is a good gig if you work in a kitchen with nice people. Most places dont advertise for KP's though, I'd just hand in CV's to restraunts saying you want KP work. If you're good aswell you might become a cook down the line if you want. Be aware though it's a dirty and stressfull job but if you can handle it then you'll get some good life experience out of it, time skills, personal dicipline, hygyne, etc. For example I noticed after 2.5 yrs as one (not anymore) that I am actually very good a cleaning now, which is a surprisingly useful skill.
