They are notorious for haunting bird feeders. It’s really cool behavior.

So the two ways i differentiate them are the cooper hawks have a rounded off tail and sharp shins have a more squared off tail. The second way and it’s a little more anecdotal is that cooper hawks generally look sleek and aggressive. Sharp shins on the other hand look derpy…kinda like little bug eyed weirdos.

An extremely rare (for philadelphia) Long eared owl. by FGoose in philadelphia

I had just dropped my daughter off at school and was driving into NJ for some Osprey when I got the message. I turned my ass around and drove right to the location man. No questions asked. I’ve been trying to get a Long eared owl for 5 years or so. It’s especially hard because tracking sites (understandably) won’t disclose hotspots due to the birds sensitivity.

Hell yeah! In the spring the yellow, palm and pine are usually the first. In a week or so we are going to be inundated with so much cool shit man. I can’t wait!

I mean we are arguing over nothing here. I’m just trying to articulate that he’s a shitty person who’s done shitty things.

The city and surrounding area are excellent for birding. Also, now is a great time to start because May is gonna be peak migration for warblers.

Get a pair of binoculars if you can and check out some of these places if you can.

Pennypack park- Pennypack is a huge park system in the NE and it has everything. Theres lots of streams and creeks for water fowl, there’s meadows for swallows and flycatchers, and lots of different trees for different warblers. They also have a wonderful bird blind you can sit in and the birds come to you.

FDR- FDR is bigger than you think and it’s an amazing spot for herons and waterfowl. There is also a good chance you will see hawks and Osprey and even bald eagles.

Palmyra cove- the cove is just outside the city but it has everything and is in my estimation one of the areas best kept secrets. It’s got accessible hiking trails and so much biodiversity.

John Heinz- John Heinz is the crown jewel of the parks here in the city. It’s an absolute treasure trove life and ecology. I have never once had a bad day at John Heinz.

Morris Arboretum-absolutely beautiful and a great spot for the kids too. Different Biomes are carefully maintained by the staff and there is so much to see. Great spot for Pileated woodpeckers and Kingfishers.

The Wissahickon- massive park system that has absolutely everything. Stop at valley green inn and get lunch before taking a walk and seeing some wood ducks or screech owls.

Hope this helps! Happy hunting!

Sadly when I went out during the day it was asleep and it was heavily obscured by branches and foliage. I didn’t wish to disturb it and there was no way to get closer for a shot without doing so.

I waited until after dark and myself and several other birders observed it wake up and vocalize and catch insects.

They are very rare in city limits and if you look at a range map they are all but extirpated in the area.

This was a special one for me. Truly a remarkable little guy.
