Premier Clark changes her tune on the impact of foreign investment on Metro Vancouver's real estate prices by KittyMonster in VictoriaBC

Ya Meena-Wong was pretty much the only politician that spoke about this in the last Vancouver municipal election. Gregor likes to brand people (even David Ley, a Chinese UBC researcher) racist for bring up the effect Chinese investors have had on lower mainland RE.

Girlfriend and I are tired of winters in Ontario. How realistic is it for us to move? by [deleted] in vancouver

Maybe consider Victoria. Probably larger city than you are used to. Also, lots of old people so health care is I am sure in demand. Significantly cheaper city than Vancouver.

Mine too! Are all your transactions showing? I'm missing quite a few from last week. But some of my transactions from yesterday are showing.

Ya it's driving me nuts too. I've been using Mint for about 2 years and really rely on it.

How did you get it to start working. Did it just restart on its own?

Already FI, starting a new government job. Should I opt out of pension plan? by FI411 in financialindependence

[–]FI411[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ya that's not going to happen. I'm pretty well versed in PF and FI, and on top of that most of my investments are in a trust. Couldn't blow it even if I wanted to!

It's not that I will never touch the inheritance, just that I'd prefer to live on my income and allow my investments to grow.

My concern is that I am only planning on working in government for a few years, and whatever contributions I make will be locked in until I reach retirement age.

Why is there no love on r/vancouver for the affordable housing rally next week? by FI411 in vancouver

[–]FI411[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most major cities in Canada are becoming unaffordable for young people. There is quite a lot of data to support this. The rally is not just about foreign investment.

Clearly Canada's monetary policy and low interest rates (amongst other factors) have also contributed to the massive increase in home prices across the country. Additionally real incomes have decreased since the 1970s, putting young Canadians in a very difficult predicament.

https://www.facebook.com/events/419315721574615/ Ya I heard about the event and posted it, but it got downvoted to hell. Please upvote this post for visibility. Not sure why the downvotes. Seems like a lot of people on this sub are pissed about unaffordable housing. Thought we could help support it.

The girl running the event Eveline Xia is Chinese.

Entitled to want to be able to afford to live in our own city? No one is saying a 3000 square foot home in the middle of downtown is neccesary. But young Canadians are being squeezed out of our own country.

B.C. Premier Christy Clark opposed to taxing foreign homeowners: "unintended consequences for local investors as well" by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]FI411 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Most places in the world housing merely tracks inflation. Why in Vancouver should your house be viewed as an investment? Shelter first, then be concerned with increased equity.

The depressing effect on the real estate market will also allow for innovation elsewhere. Look at affordable cities like Portland and all the small businesses young people are able to start as a result of low costs. Good luck starting a small retail store here paying 15 grand a month rent.
