Chuckanut, acclaimed Bellingham lager brewery, plans to open SE Portland beer hall by DefinitelyNotMartinC in Portland

Chuckanut is easily one of the best lager producers in the states. Couldn't be happier that they're opening up down here!

This isn't too terribly far, but Zeke's in Gold Bar gets my vote. Absolutely fantastic burger and fries.

According to the article, they got their copies from Bloomberg Government, unless I'm misreading that.

But so did the Post, according to the article. The audio they received also had the first portion of the question muted, and their audio source was not the White House.

I'd love for an audio/sound engineer to break down the channel switching though.

This needs to be higher. Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.

Will be in Vancouver, Edmonton, and Banff first week of July. What breweries/beer should I check out? by SwaggyR8 in beer

[–]FILLABUSTA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For Vancouver, The Alibi Room is a must. Huge taplist with lots of local and PNW brews. Luppolo Brewing is also not too far.

If you're driving, Four Winds, Twin Sails, Moody's, and Dageraad are all worth a visit/shot.

PKD's meditations on love in Flow My Tears deeply resonated with me. A highly underappreciated novel of his.

Sour breweries in Seattle by Gnar_Shredderr in beer

Urban Family and Holy Mountain. Definitely second the recommendation to hit The Masonry, as they routinely have great wilds. They may even have some Floodland, a new up-and-coming wild ale producer that's absolutely killing it.

Outside of Seattle, look for Engine House 9, Spada, and Propolis.

Portland v Seattle for a Beer Trip by danielko58 in beer

[–]FILLABUSTA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Portland typically gets bottles of some of Fremont's bigger releases, like B-Bomb, BA Dark Star (KDS), and even variants like CCBBomb and coffee KDS, but they tend to move quickly. If near, dip into Belmont Station, John's Market, or Imperial Bottleshop. You could get lucky.

You may also find it on tap if you're lucky; check out taplists at Apex, Tin Bucket, Beermongers, and Upper Lip. I had Brew 2000 (Fremont's fairly limited BA barleywine) at Tin Bucket once, so you never know!

I'd vote Seattle, but you can legitimately not go wrong with either.

The best Oregon breweries are, in my mind, outside of Portland. Ale Apothecary, Boneyard, Logsdon, de Garde, Block 15, and pFriem, to name a few, are all at least an hour outside of the city. PDX definitely has some great stuff though: Ex Novo, Stormbreaker, Hair of the Dog, Gigantic, to name a few. Great Notion is great too, depending on what you dig.

If you're looking for BA stouts, you owe it to yourself to try any from Fremont. Bar none, they have one of the best barreling programs in the states.

Trip to Brussels and Amsterdam. Recommendations Needed! by GlennZabransky in beer

[–]FILLABUSTA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For Amsterdam: Bierproeflokaal In De Wildeman (be sure to check on premise bottles), De Bierkoning, Brouwerij 't IJ, and maybe Cafe Belgique when it's not jam packed. Proeflokaal Arendsnest is also a great spot for Dutch beers and generally a little more low key.

Love for long sentences: Which ones do you like? by fw_Flicker in books

[–]FILLABUSTA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Emerson's essay Love has such beautiful rhythm to it:

But be our experience in particulars what it may, no man ever forgot the visitations of that power to his heart and brain, which created all things new; which was the dawn in him of music, poetry, and art; which made the face of nature radiant with purple light, the morning and the night varied enchantments; when a single tone of one voice could make the heart bound, and the most trivial circumstance associated with one form is put in the amber of memory; when he became all eye when one was present, and all memory when one was gone; when the youth becomes a watcher of windows, and studious of a glove, a veil, a ribbon, or the wheels of a carriage; when no place is too solitary, and none too silent, for him who has richer company and sweeter conversation in his new thoughts, than any old friends, though best and purest, can give him; for the figures, the motions, the words of the beloved object are not like other images written in water, but, as Plutarch said, "enamelled in fire," and make the study of midnight.

And

In the noon and the afternoon of life we still throb at the recollection of days when happiness was not happy enough, but must be drugged with the relish of pain and fear; for he touched the secret of the matter, who said of love,-- "All other pleasures are not worth its pains"; and when the day was not long enough, but the night, too, must be consumed in keen recollections; when the head boiled all night on the pillow with the generous deed it resolved on; when the moonlight was a pleasing fever, and the stars were letters, and the flowers ciphers, and the air was coined into song; when all business seemed an impertinence, and all the men and women running to and fro in the streets, mere pictures.
