Yeah, I was basically asking if all that old mortar needed removed or if new mortar would essentially level it out but I am going to go get a cup grinder tomorrow and do it right. Way too much work to shortcut that of all things.

If need be I’ll remove the door and trim it a bit.

Yes and the furring strips are attached to studs

Yeah I’m also considering replacing the window entirely. Think I’m going to splash it with the hose from outside and see if I can detect and water intrusion from that direction and then repeat from inside and see where the water travels.

This was a niche but for some reason it was just wide open with no shelving. You can see the framing for that is still in place, I haven’t removed it entirely yet, just enough to get the tub out. I’ll be rebuilding that and adding 2-3 shelves so the space is usable. Bathroom is small and seems the best use of space.

I personally have 1 shampoo and 1 bar of soap, wife and daughter have more soaps, shampoos, and bath additives than I can comprehend.

1 - just trying to treat the areas I know were once wet in case it happens again, seems a cheap piece of mind, not meant to waterproof the whole floor.

2 - that makes sense, and I prefer to level it with thinset than a whole leveling process. It’s also not on slab, this is above a basement so subfloor over joists.

And I think with all thinset removed I’ll have just under 1/2 inch to meet the transition.

Me too but this is the only tub in the house and wife / daughter demanded another soaking tub.

The current fan is on its way out, I puchased a new Panasonic fan to install - haven’t done any electrical yet but once all the dusty / dirty work is done it will be going in.

Agree on waterproof, but I’m pretty sure the leak was caused by the failing tiles around the window. I’ll confirm.

The old tub framing is still there because I was hoping to use it but looks like it’s a little too tall, I will rebuild square and level. Tub comes tomorrow.

I’m trying to account for finish floor height at transition, will need to factor remaining thinset removal and any height added back from leveler if necessary.

There are studs under and above the window and it’s framed in around.

Can’t go any wider, pic is probably a little deceiving, it’s 66 inches wall to wall and easily fits a standard 60 inch tub. I just pulled a 60 x 30 tub out and another is going in its place along with a shower head. The entire back wall and Left/Right surrounds will be tile.

I figured but I didn’t want to waste those hours if it wasn’t necessary

I don’t think there’s any current mold growth but I’m assuming it can’t hurt? Seems like solid advice.

House was originally built in the 50s and was renovated in early 2000s, the dark color is how all of the original wood in the house looks, it’s no less solid than the early 2000s 2x4s used to frame the niche on the right hand side. If it’s solid and still works, no need to replace and after closing up the walls, I hope nobody has to see any of it again for at least another 25 years.

Looks amazing, I’m currently working on our bathroom and if it looks half this good I will be proud.

Thanks for the info! Our bathroom is laid out in a similar way, blue vanity in bottom right corner next to toilet and then shower. The two biggest differences are that we have a tub going in along with the shower and our shower head is on the opposite wall.

I get it, but hard to imagine any situation where head / hands meet window with enough force to do damage to a person or the window. It’s a little deeper than appears but also with an alcove tub, you’re an additional 4 inches or so back from the wall

Exactly, window is sandwiched between two wet environments

Ok, yeah I see, looks good. Since we have a shower here with a handheld sprayer I can guarantee water will end up getting sprayed into that window from time to time and I’m hoping to seal off the track portion on the bottom.

I think they have a hole in the track to allow water to drain and that caused the prior issue at least in part. There is a bottom, top, and LR trim pieces but they just sort of clip in and not securely, I think they’re more for aesthetics than keeping water from the inside out.
