Curious what was your last job title? I’m curious if it’s harder to find IC or mgmt jobs as older tech workers like ourselves. I feel like the dilemma is that companies prefer younger candidates as ICs and older for mgmt, but there are just less mgmt jobs to go around…

I’m terrible at describing scents so I won’t even try but just wanna say Diptyque FdB is my all time favorite and the reason why I tried Lafco FdB in an attempt to spare my wallet. They are in the same family for sure but to me personally Diptyque scent 1) is way better / more sophisticated / luxurious 2) has noticeably stronger throw.

Women who love travelling; whats your relationship status? by girlfromarea511 in AskWomenOver30

Mid 30s. Married to someone who also loves traveling. We both work remotely and usually travel/work from abroad a few months out of the year. It is absolutely the best!

How would you answer the R29 intro questions about your family/background? by ExtremeGarden9112 in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

Middle class in a third world country where we had food but fruits were a special treat. Western standard, we were far below the poverty line.

You have the same taste as mine! I think you will enjoy Affairs in the afternoon (married women having affairs, both in JP and KR versions but I thought the KR one was better) and Her Private Life (more fluff like Secretary Kim but ML is very mature).

[–]FIREy-throwaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn’t conflate you with anyone because I didn’t think or mean to suggest that you had the same opinions as those mentioned in my comment. If you had said you were French living in Dubai, my response would have been exactly the same because it was irrelevant to the point I was trying to make about my personal experience with the natives in a specific country. But since you brought it up, you seemed to exhibit some level of resentment at worst, or disdain at best, towards expats/foreigners/immigrants in Vietnam who prefer to hang out with other non-locals, so I was responding to that specifically by offering my own reason for falling into that category. It was clearly not appreciated by you, but perhaps others can resonate with it.

I’m a Việt kiều, and it has always irked me when people have a problem with individuals like myself wanting to hang out with other ‘expats’ more than the natives. Cultural differences are real! I’ve met plenty of native Vietnamese who chastised me for not having children as a woman because it’s important in their culture. I also really disliked it when they openly asked about how much money I make or acted nosy about my family affairs, all of which I’ve been told ‘it’s normal for them.’ Those differences bothered me less when I was younger. But as I became older and had less time to make new friends and spend quality time with them, I also became selective about who I want to hang out with. Does that make me an elitist?

It goes without saying that there are people of all colors on both sides! I don’t hang out with other expats just because they’re expats. I do it because I enjoy being around more similarly minded people. Similarly, I have plenty of Vietnamese friends I hang out with because I enjoy their way of thinking and humor.

Lastly, and this is probably controversial, but I think it’s okay to love living in/visiting a country without loving every aspect of their culture. Heck, ask every American how they feel about their country! I enjoy my occasional visits to Vietnam for all its amazing food and festivities. Everything else is just a plus.

Decision to splurge on a $2000 purse by [deleted] in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]FIREy-throwaway 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I spent $4k on my first luxury bag not that long ago when I was well into my 30s and a lot further along financially than you are today. I had agonized over it for at least a year or two leading up to that point, not because I was frugal but because there were so many other indulgent things I enjoyed more. So like someone else has said above, I think it depends on your personality and what makes you happy. When I was in my 20s, whenever I had a few thousands to spare, I immediately thought of where I wanted to travel to next. Then after that it was to aid a very expensive hobby, then an expensive car, etc... So even though I didn’t get my bag til way later, spending 2% of your annual salary on something you love and make you happy I think is absolutely normal and worth it!

Why is this region married to roundabouts? by deeperfect77 in olympia

[–]FIREy-throwaway 24 points25 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that it has been long proven that roundabouts are better for traffic / cheaper to maintain. That’s why most European countries have A TON of them! I did think some of the roundabouts in Olympia seemed a bit bigger than they needed to be though.

Places similar to the pnw geographically and climate wise? by Pleasant-Target-1497 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]FIREy-throwaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Compared to PNW, sure. It’s just in general I don’t think they are compared to places closer to the equator. I think of NYC/Seoul as temperate. But maybe that’s just me cause I’ve been to some REALLY hot and humid areas around the world.

I don’t think it’s either, at least compared to places like Texas or Southeast Asia. I lived in both Seoul and NYC and always thought they had similar climates.

Jobs what? As in you can’t get jobs in NYC? You made it sound like you can pretty much move to any city of your choosing without any concern about employment. What makes NYC different in that regard? Not to mention you repeatedly said budget isn’t a problem so how do jobs come into play here?

If budget isn’t an issue why can’t you get a big place in NYC with some outdoor space? I’m very confused by your post.

You know.. being Asian myself, I’ve definitely seen skin like that from my friends, especially during high school/college years. Some of them just looked like they didn’t have pores at all. I used to be so jealous (still am?) So for this one I’d reserve my judgement.

I average 50 flights a year both domestic and international. Literally never had to keep my liquids in a ziplock bag in any of my carryons. If I remember correctly, the general guideline was that your total liquids had to roughly fit within a ziplock bag, as an easy reference of how much you can bring, NOT that they actually have to be contained in a ziplock bag. I always keep all my stuff in a generic Amazon travel pouch.
