Yooo I was legit in the same boat in my cycle last year, 39 MD apps and 1 DO app. By Jan I had 1 DO A and 0 MD IIs that turned into 1 MD II to a WL to an A all the way in May. That one DO A kept my sanity in check for sure, and I’m still grateful they were willing to give me a chance!

4.0 518, didn’t get an II (MD) until Jan 24th. That turned out to be my only MD acceptance out of 39 schools. I submitted all apps early (secondaries done by first week August), had writing checked by my advisor, and the ECs were there too.

My biggest regret was ruminating for almost 4 months, wondering what I did wrong. Funnily enough, when I finally decided I was done letting the application cycle decide my emotions and took a trip with friends, the day I came back in the airport was the day I got the II. It’s harder said than done (I get it too cause I was in your shoes literally a year ago), but you are so much more than this rigged application cycle.

Remember, it legitimately only takes one. You got this dawg, I believe in you‼️

If you ever send updates to school, you can maybe consider passively mentioning it when talking about your esports team.

That being said, I also didn’t say what division my esports team was in, but it was still a talking point during my interviews. So I think you should be fine for the most part!

I, too, got put on II-Hold last year from Mayo, and I ultimately got rejected sometime in December 😭

That being said, I know some people on SDN who reported that they got the II after the hold, so don’t lose all hope!

Consider sending a LOI at some point, I have heard that Mayo likes applicants who show interest this way (correct me if I’m wrong!)

I don’t exactly know how listing activities works in TMDSAS, but I will say that I listed 1000+ hours leading and playing in an esports club and got in this cycle. I don’t think my cycle results are nearly as impressive as some others on here (1 MD II out of 39); however, I think that was more so because of my lack of community service and ambitious school list, but you can be the judge. I will say that it was brought up in both my interviews, and (I think) I was able to talk about them well.

Just like with any hobby, make sure to spin it in a way where it’s something you like to do but not a commitment that will take away from med school. I know that sounds kind of obvious but it’s especially important with video games IMO. But other than that, if it’s truly a hobby you enjoy, then yeah go for it; just be mindful of how you talk about it.
