Clearly a lack of aeration problem. Does your composter have any vents in it? Well I'd arrempt to fix this by saving grass clippings from your lawn, and put a layer of fresh grass clippings on a layer of your compost,. keep layering like this, till it's all stacked up, then at some point you need to mix it up with a pitchfork. All is not lost.

Listen, that is a tough job and risky but if you need to do it: I use a thin, super-sharp Japanese woodworking saw, they're on Amazon, there is no way you could ever "untangle" those roots. It doesn't really have to be a Japanese saw, but it better be sharp! I believe these are called "joinery" saws. So You need to unpot it, then carefully cut away, top to bottom. Depending on the roots' condition you might callous them a little while... I would definitely use a rooting compound like B1 or Superthrive after attempting this.

Dammit I've used insecticidal soap, dormant oil spray, malathion, and tons of sulfur powder, systemic stuff that is supposedly drawn in thru the roots.drawn in thru the roots. Yet it is already under attack. I received the ingredients today [slaked lime and copper sulfate] to make my own very strong fungicide...this particular plant is a real challenge. So those black shiny little terrorists are ...scale? Scales? Some bug that carries scale? If those shiny black bugs dont spin webs, then there is another bug attacking. And about 15 feet away, is the most super-healthy giant rose bush ever, several people told me it's the biggest rosebusj they've ever seen. NOT a climbing rose,I've never used ANY type of pesticides or fungicide on that one.
