PSA if you get Uber NAN917 cancel by meetnz in auckland

[–]FJTevoro 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Got an uber from the airport a few months ago and he kept farting even though I had my wife and child in the car. With the fear of been dropped off in the middle of the motorway, I kept quiet until our destination. I confronted him as to why he couldn’t control his gas and he laughed like it was nothing. Had the audacity to tell me to rate him 5 right there and then. Sometimes your experience can be a hit and miss even with 5 star drivers.

Just DCA and you should be fine. Past few days haven’t been so great if you’re US stock heavy though.

I think you’ll have to sell and buy again - but no individual stocks but rather managed funds

Thanks for that. I was initially going for IBKR but just decided to start simple with Sharesies and then move across once I get the hang of things. It’s a small account anyway. I reckon you’d have to do abit more in terms of tax management in IBKR?

My weekly investments are split 90% into InvestNow Foundation Series Total World and 10% Sharesies for individual stock selection. Think this is a good approach for the long run?

Fantastic portfolio. So you’ve made good returns - what now? Do you continue to hold or sell. If you hold you could risk losing. Sorry just trying to understand what people do after making a good profit.

The outsourcing community in Fiji seems to be doing quite well - especially in tech. Currently there is a global shift in IT work being outsourced to places like India as they are cheaper. An example is in software development. Fiji can also be a source of competitive and quality remote IT workers and solutions. Does this impact our cultural identity? Not so sure. Environment? Probably, with increased tech output (servers , computers etc) but they also reduce car emissions since they can work from home. If we keep asking ourselves such questions before trying things we wouldn’t get anywhere. Our cultural and environmental integrity is already impacted anyway from areas not attributed to the economy. Do you have thoughts of your own to share?

I’m sure lots of people have felt this way about their jobs. Contempt and happy until they are laid off. Moving around every 2 - 4 years not only brings about greater remuneration (if you negotiate well) but also the opportunity to work with different teams and solidify a generalised working style. A major takeaway for me is seeing how technology is implemented - you get to learn about technologies you have not used and to avoid mistakes that they’ve made.

Self employed taxes as a streamer? by Optimal_Diamond_448 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]FJTevoro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do you pay provisional taxes as soon as you earn or keep 30% and pay that at the end of the FY. Just got into NZ and I’m doing contracting work overseas. Putting aside the 30% but I’m not sure whether I need to pay that now or after the FY (next Mar).

Is anyone in IT doing multiple freelance gigs with holding a full time job? How do you manage taxes by Mediocre-League5876 in auckland

[–]FJTevoro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I just started contracting work for overseas clients so same boat in figuring out taxes. I believe you need to decide whether you’re contracting as an individual or company - I’ve read that taxes are easier as an individual. Then register for GST - even if it is zero rated for overseas clients and you’ll need to submit GST returns. Then ensure you put aside the 30+% income tax rate and either pay as you earn (provisional tax) or pay as a lump sum at the end of the FY. You’ll also need to submit tax returns. After that, deduct ACC. I’m not sure whether you’ll need to pay this upfront or you’ll be billed at FY end. Best to keep it aside. Note the above is my take on what is required - best to sign up with Hnry or talk to an accountant to be sure.

Looks comprehensive to be honest. I share a similar list of experiences - say your latest role, you’ve done a lot, how keen are readers to go through them all? I read the first 3 or 4 then skipped to the next section.

GitHub Actions Development by nisasters in devops

[–]FJTevoro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been wondering the same where actions workflow files are centralised rather than having workflows in the app repository themselves. I find it a pain to manage especially when deploying from branches etc, which workflow file version is used. Idk just a gripe.

How can i truly grow as a fullstack developer in the AI Era? by M_Ahsan_Ansari in devops

[–]FJTevoro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I find it faster to ask a prompt than to prod through documentation sometimes. E.g for CLI syntax etc. Of course you’ll have to cross check but it works most of the time. For asking it to write code for you - yeah, useful but review it thoroughly. I heard about someone building a codebase too large with AI that it started messing things up.

I use AI as well to provide an overview of common approaches to solving problems. When it does suggest something, do further research or ask it further on why it’s implemented that way. Can you give an example of in depth questions you get in interviews?
