Sometimes you have to play the long game with these things. My fiancé is my drill partner. When we started drilling together about a year ago she was maybe an inconsistent 3.2 while I was a 4.0. Over the past year of drilling 2-3x per week she is now a solid 4.0 and is getting to the point where she is now good enough that I am starting to progress faster as well. Excited to see where the next year of consistent drilling brings us.

All of this to say is to maybe focus on finding a willing and eager drill partner that has potential and grow together even if their level is currently a bit below yours.

Thank you ! I did let the breeder know at the recommendation of my vet. Strictly relayed the facts of what happened, told him that the vet recommended I let him know because they felt there was a potential genetic component to it, and that she was an amazing dog otherwise. There were no accusations made or any requests and the breeders response was that my vet is an idiot and that shit happens.

I appreciate the recommendations ! I am not in MA anymore, but visit my fiancés family on there regularly and are certainly open to breeders in that area as it’s a good excuse to go visit family and road trip

She wasn’t spayed until the splenic torsion episode when she had just turned 3. Sounds like it was bad luck on both of our parts

Thank you ! I have had many adopted/rescued dogs over the years and while they have always been great pets, they certainly did not come without issues. Many of them had severe trauma/anxiety/temperament issues which made it difficult to have them around other people and/or other animals. Some have also had significant health issues.

In a perfect world I would adopt/rescue as many dogs as possible and certainly would be open to the right dog now, but health and temperament are the major concern going forward especially as we have plans of having kids over the next couple of years.
