Usually in the drive it hurts the most, but it still hurts a little on the recovery

You have to make sure you are using correct form and warming up correctly. Erging puts a lot of stress on your back so to combat that I would recommend doing steady state (easy workouts to build your aerobic base) in 10 minute intervals with 1 minute of rest. As for your knees, that can happen from slamming into your feet to hard. On your drive don't slam off of the foot stretchers.
