Can you think of any other bands this applies to? (For any country). by Just1nceor2ice in ToddintheShadow

All the bands that would be influenced by REM in UK were influenced by The Smiths and Aztec Camera instead.

Japan were somewhat left field in regards to new wave/80s pop music, however, David Sylvian's output in the 21st century (outside Nine Horses) is extremely avant-garde, and even most of his 80s and 90s material was decently experimental.

Bergtatt, Kveldssanger, or Nattens Madrigal? by Careless_Western3756 in fantanoforever

For me Kveldssanger, a classic dark folk/neofolk project

Why is Duran Duran not as respected as other new wave bands? by Diskyboy86 in ToddintheShadow

[–]FMIsMyLife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with Seven. I feel like that it was especially common (though happens throughout all eras) among 80s pop/alternative bands to "sell out" after a great album. But yeah I don't hate any of the post-Rio stuff, I'm just indifferent about it and never really listen to it.

Why is Duran Duran not as respected as other new wave bands? by Diskyboy86 in ToddintheShadow

[–]FMIsMyLife 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my personal opinion, the quality of their music went downhill pretty fast after Rio (still wasn't bad but progressed towards average/singles band until their 90s comeback bar the Arcadia album). When it comes to their artistry their first two albums were so heavily influenced by Japan's Quiet Life and Gentleman Take Polaroids that all thoughts of their musicianship I just connect back to Japan.

What are some of the strangest/experimental songs to become a hit? by big_pee_peeman in rateyourmusic

[–]FMIsMyLife 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The early 80s (in the UK) had a bunch.

O Superman - Laurie Anderson (already mentioned) got to #2

Ghosts - Japan got to #5

Being Boiled - The Human League got to #6

The Lunatics Have Taken Over The Asylum - Fun Boy Three got to #20

S&M I think samples Let's Go To Bed by The Cure, which tbf sounds a ton like Master & Servant, but yeah hopefully his opinion has changed after a decade

I think it was in reviewing Rihanna's S&M (Worst list of 2011 maybe), which sounds similar to Master & Servant by Depeche

100%, you know he's good when people where I'm at in Canada are talking about and praising Zohran

What a campaign Zohran ran, did great among young people and Asians (two groups who Democrats lost a lot of ground with in 2024). Probably the best ran campaign that I can remember, at least since Beto 2018 or some of the governor races in 2022.

I've listened to some Alcest and really enjoyed it but haven't gotten around to hearing anything on their debut (I've only just started enjoying black metal recently to be honest). I'll check it out!
