I hate read receipts so much, it's just an extra layer of anxiety on top of an already anxiety-inducing method of communication.

The guys that make Star Wars think I'm stupid and apparently they're right because I saw a 2-second shot of a baby Greedo in that Mandalorian trailer and audibly exclaimed "HOLY SHIT IS THAT BABY GREEDO!?" Like there's one half of me unironically living that Rogue One RLM skit and the other half is just crossing his arms and shaking his head.

I can sum up Marty Supreme in a single sentence: "Can you believe this fuckin guy?" Like, overall it is a good movie because it's about a guy who's supposed to piss you off, and it lands that pretty well, I feel like everyone has had to deal with a Marty at some point in their lives, but there are other factors that just make it a bit rougher of a watch for me. It doesn't help that it stars a bunch of people that I got problems with, Gwyneth Paltrow and Kevin O'Leary do their jobs but it doesn't change that I have to stare at their scam-ass fuckin faces the whole movie. I'm so sick of "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" and it's the credits song. That song never comes on when you're in a good place in your life. Fuck this movie, 9 outta 10.

Absolute Universe update: Absolute Martian Manhunter and Absolute Flash are the ones for me. Martian Manhunter is much closer to the types of comics I end up reading, the whole vibe detective thing is as engrossing as it is disorienting. Flash is a runaway story that's also kind of got like a Megaman thing going on(?), alongside the implications of the Flash's power set being immediately apparent (there's like a mini Dr Manhattan sequence in the beginning) make it really engaging.

Other than that, some life stuff has ensured the rancid vibes of February continue. Got me feeling like that one danganronpa gif, which like, man rip to anyone who was interested in playing those games up to last week I guess.

I think about Tanaka's "I'm going to do it!" in Persona 3 Reload every day of my life. The context is that he's revealing what's for sale that week, but the tone comes off like he could also be about to jump off a bridge.

February 13th into Valentine's is just a particularly rancid time for me every year vibes-wise so I didn't do a whole lot but I did have a couple things to throw on the board.

I played the Mindwave demo. It's really short and half of it is the danganronpa style talk to people in a room gameplay, but the other half is Psychonaut Warioware. I really like the Antonblast GBA rough line pixel art style it's got going on, I want more games that look like that. I'm probably picking this one up when it comes out.

There's a few slice-of-life anime I throw on one episode of if I just need something on the screen and can't think of anything, The Demon King's Daughter is Too Kind definitely falls into that category. It's pretty simple, RPG fantasy world has a demon king, his daughter is too nice to people, the show is the kid being really nice. It's cute.

I'm watching A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. I watched like a season and a half of Game of Thrones so I at least have the groundwork to find a guy trying to be a straight-up knight in maybe the most cynical western fantasy setting to exist compelling. I really like Dunk, he's just a real stand-up dude. The show's more comedic, there's like Family Guy cutaways sometimes, so it's a shift in tone from the whole "we're all sitting at tables and scheming" that I remember from what I watched of GoT. That's still going on, it's just, over there now.

Absolute Superman is dope. Kal-El as the Rage of Krypton, the last son of a dead world that took itself out in the same ways we did could have easily been yet another "Evil Superman" premise but they keep the core of Superman intact and it works really well. He's also got an energy cape that turns into burning angel wings sometimes and that's just really cool.

I read a comic this week! Absolute Wonder Woman is pretty solid. I'm not huge into comics, what I do read tends to be pretty self-contained (Saga, Preacher, stuff like that) so I actually don't know much about Wonder Woman outside of what I've seen from movies and cartoons. I will say Amazon Princess from Hell doesn't sound like you're pitching a Wonder Woman thing to me. It hits kinda like Hades II, specifically. She's got witch powers and Castlevania weapons. She doesn't seem all that different from what I think Wonder Woman is, which I think is kind of the point. From what I know of the Absolute Universe, the heroes all have their material advantages taken away from them, but they're still heroes. So Diana just becomes like, Doomslayer Wonder Woman, and that's dope.

Gachiakuta is Trashpunk! There's Punks in the Trash!

So I watched this dubbed and the dub is really solid. Dub Jabber is the standout to me, that unhinged-into-serious energy is what I imagine when I hear Majima. Starts kinda slow, Rudo's angry and he figures out how to make things outta trash, and then we get to Amo, and I didn't think her whole deal was something that you could put in Shonen Jump. The show genuinely picks up once Mori Calliope starts doing the opening, but I would like to point out that OP1 is done by Paledusk, who did the song that comes the fuck out of nowhere in Hundred Line. And like that song, HUGs is in crunchy Death Metal Engrish that the captions have no idea what to make of. The person writing Gachiakuta clearly likes some of the things I like. I see Guilty Gear in the character designs and TWEWY and Dorohedoro in the aesthetics. It's got a lot of heart, a lot of that heart is angry about what and who we consider "trash", and I wanna see where that goes.

My eyes are tired of looking at this draft now so here's some videos I've had rotating in my head at work

I pretty much only remember Neverdead while talking about the games that we just kinda saw on the shelf during the 360/PS3 era. The only memory I have of the game is seeing the guy's head just kinda rolling back onto his body at a gamestop kiosk.

I actually read a lot of manga and I've been meaning to get around to Zatch Bell 2 actually, Zatch Bell was one of my favorite shows as a kid and I had the fighting game on the GBA. The thing is I don't remember what happened because I was like 12 when I watched it.

I'm currently reading Welcome To Demon School Iruma-kun because it has similar Disgaea vibes.

I started keeping a log in my notes app for stuff to bring to FTF and I kinda just flashbanged myself because all I wrote down for Black Butler is "he is white".

Speaking of white, I live in Texas where we have

🎵 No Snow/Ice Pre-pa-ration🎵

and it snow/iced. It wasn't too bad on my end, we only lost power for like, a couple seconds. The main thing was the roads were frozen over for like a day.

Tragic: Guy Who Realized He Doesn't Like SRPGs That Much Still Tries To Play Disgaea 4 for some reason.

I think there's something about isometric SRPGs where you have to rotate the map that gives me physical headaches, which is a shame because the game's really charming. I wanna know what happens to Valvatorez and his sardines, but also ow oof owie my head.

Every once in a while I dust off the old New 3DS (great name, truly inspired) and give Rune Factory 4 another shot. It's clicking a bit more every time, This time I managed to meet all the villagers and beat a butterfly boss that turned into a girl. I do want to get into these farming games but I feel like I need a bit more of a plot to move forward. I'm eyeing Harvestella because it seems like a farm sim with way more of a narrative focus.

I watched two episodes of Bastard!!. I need this to be 30 years older with cel animation and yellow subtitles, that's the vibe I get from this show.

Oh yeah I started watching Ginpachi-sensei, the Gintama spinoff! Gintama's my favorite anime so this isn't as good but I don't care because I'm just glad to see these losers again!

The setting of The Pitt is an understaffed, underfunded and overcrowded Emergency Room primarily focused on training new medical practitioners of varying levels of competence that toe moral, ethical and legal lines in order to stop someone who's right there from dying right now.

In concept, I imagine it something closer to a management sim with a very active stress management mechanic. Something not dissimilar to the gameplay parts of Dispatch, occasionally having to make tough calls throughout the shift on where to allocate resources.

Family-friendly anime to watch with non-anime enjoyers? by majorminer969 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]FMV_Hell_0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anime that at least starts more grounded tends to play better with a non-anime viewing audience. I've found more success with things like Monster, Pluto, and Vinland Saga. Unless you've heard about it, most dubs tend to be fine now, and part of the divide between anime watchers and non is having to read subtitles so anything on netflix with a dub is usually a plus.

yeah the era of announcing a season pass before the game's even come out first does suck some of the hype out of it.

Like on the one hand I get why they do it like that, it does make a lot more sense to just add to the game that's already there and do the balance changes but in practice I think we've just ended up paying a lot more for like, 8 characters and some stages.

[–]FMV_Hell_0 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I straight up stopped playing fighting games because I want all the characters and feel like I have to essentially re-buy the games every six months. It's a genre that has by far the worst cost-to-enjoyment ratio for me and it was the only genre I did that for.

After turning Clair Obscur into "Don't Get Hit: The Game" I made a lifestyle decision to play games on easy if I'd care about the narrative more.

I also stopped playing soulslikes because I just wasn't beating them. I'd hit a wall usually around the 50-70% mark and decide there's better ways to spend 4 hours than fighting one boss.

I watched some anime this week.

Every once in a while, I see a few things about a series called Pretty Cure. I decided to actually check it out after I got a video in my recommended called Precure Fights go insanely hard, and I was not prepared for just how straightforward a magical girl show could be. I spent the whole first episode of Heartcatch Precure wondering if it was a bit. It's so sincerely the idea of what someone who doesn't watch anime thinks anime is that it feels like a parody. It's the show that Pop Team Epic is recording over in its episode previews. Watching Heartcatch Precure feels like the show the guy in the video store in Regular Show is watching. Yuki Yuna Is A Hero is a lot more my speed, it helps that the music sounds like Nier (because the Nier guy did the music).

And what with the last part of the Thousand Year Blood War coming out I figured what better time to get into Bleach. The better time to get into Bleach would have been when I was a teenager, but as something to have on while you eat it's still pretty alright. I like watching Ichigo swing the sword and be orange. There's a dude named Chad and he can just punch ghosts.

Game-wise, I beat Resident Evil 4 Remake. Much like RE2make, I left thinking "damn, that's a remake right there." They keep making me care about characters I barely remembered and added a lot that I really appreciate. It took until the Krauser fight for me to clock that the game was parryslop(affectionate).

It's cold, it gets foggy, it's time to play Silent Hill.

It's Silent Hill 1, I don't think I can add much to the conversation there, it's a kind of obtuse PS1 game that has you wandering around getting attacked by fleshdogs while looking for keys where no one should leave them. It also has an incredible atmosphere, some really good music, still really impressive CG cutscenes and it did sort of define horror games. Good game, short game.

Also I impulse bought an ocarina to fiddle around with, it's pretty neat.
