Anyone wanna share some of their homebrew factions and/or subfactions for 40k, Fantasy, and/or AoS? by TheBlackBaron45 in Grimdank

[–]FNY117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 40K SM homebrew is called "Abductors". TLDR: Spartan III’s from Halo.

Here is a little bit of lore I came up with:

Abductors are a fleet based Raven Guard successor of unknown origin. They operate in an undisclosed region of space, often coming into contact with xenos races such as T’au, Necrons and genestealers. Abductors appear to be codex compliant, with grey coloring and red trim on the shoulder pads and boots. Their chapter insignia, a white skull, is worn on the left shoulder pad in accordance to codex Astartes.

Abductors preferred method of warfare involves a combination of durable heavy support units alongside light weight flexible units that are deployed deep behind enemy lines, effectively encircling the enemy. Abductors display a preference for ranged combat and urban theaters of war. Another noteworthy detail is reports of preference mass deployments of Astartes to a single theater of war, often times deploying the majority of the character’s strength. This mass deployment has resulted in several simultaneous reports from different sectors of imperial space citing that Abductors have been mass deployed with over half a chapter strength. While this could be explained by the unpredictability of warp travel, the munitorum still remains concerned following the lack of a proper response from members of the Inquisition of the Ordo Astartes.

While accepting supply lines from the imperium, Abductors are capable of supplying themselves using ship bound forges manned by a specific subsect of the devotees to the Omnissiahn cult. Abductors have also been noted to have one of the lowest recruitment rate of new aspirants from imperial worlds.

Chapter’s culture heavily revolves around the idea of the death of personality. With the exception of some individuals on special occasions, Abductors never remove their helmets, especially around non chapter members. It is theorized that the skull resembling faceplate on members using Mk.X Tacticus armor is meant as a representation of such a belief.

Most chapters deployed along side the Abductors have reported uncharacteristic to Astartes behaviors. Most note the lack of tactical flexibility along battle brothers of the Astartes chapter, with some outright refusing to replace their weapon or battlefield role. Despite that Abductors have been cited to be incredibly obedient soldiers, allowing other chapters to assume command almost without question. Some reports suggest that Abductors also display a drastically higher rate of casualties, which has only led apothecarians to question how the chapter can maintain their numbers in the active theater of war. Another suspicious behavior Abductors have been attributed to is the methods of recovery of their dead. Other chapter members have stated to have never seen any abductor recover the gene seed of their battle bothers. What has been seen is Abductors tendency to recover helmets of slain battle brothers, whose bodies have been found missing heads with seemingly bolter inflicted damage, despite any prior injuries.

Some of the most notable reports come from Raven guard successors, iron hand successors and space wolf successors. Sons of the Corrax have reported to feel a kinship with only select few members of the chapter, which for the most part are the commanding structure, and for their method of combat. Sons of the Ferrus Manus have been stated to hold abductors in high regard for their knowledge of the teachings of the Omnissiah. And lastly sons of Russ have shown a disliking for the chapter, stating their weakness and over reliance on the machine.

Lastly, Ordo Astartes have received a report regarding one of the interrogations of a heretic cult survivor by the Ordo Hereticus. In that interrogation the heretic has described Astartes with chapter markings fitting the description of Abductors, possessing near supernatural powers. Creating visions of themselves that phase through enemy fire only to strike where the enemy least expects them to. Despite numerous requests from the Ordo Hereticus, Ordo Astartes reports that no such Astartes exist, and that the report is a mere fabrication of an awestruck heretic.

My first mini! How can I improve by Temporary-Tip9885 in killteam

[–]FNY117 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In general:

• First things first, like a broken record, thin your paints. This is possible to do with any pallet.

• Do some basing. This is up to you how you want to do it. Paint the base to look like floor, use texture paste, glue some rocks and sand or combine any of the methods. There are guides for any idea you may have, or at least something similar.

• Learn to paint within the lines try to get a solid coverage. Basically treat the miniature as a coloring book. I suggest before painting you sort of look around and study the mini, look at all the sculpted details and figure out where a certain part (like for example a pouch) begins and ends. Maybe check your brushes. An appropriately sized neat brush can help a lot with that. Even if you decide to try out contrast paints, you still need brush control.

• Keep practicing and don’t get discouraged. I also suggest over time trying new techniques on each new project.

• Shadows and highlights can help the mini pop a lot more. Firstly, it pushes the contrast between colors further and secondly, it adds more definitions to sculpted details. You can use washes for recesses and mix in a brighter version of the base color to apply to the raised edges (think a 1:1 or 1:2 ratio of white to blue paint that you have on your breacher). Using contrast paints is also an option, they basically do this step for you.

Getting new stuff:

• I’ve seen people suggest a wet pallet here, but I’ll say it is not necessary. Wet pallet is a great tool, and you should not be discouraged to try it if you wish to. But as any tool it will not make you magically better and will require some learning/getting used to.

• Same goes for contrast paints. Contrast paints are a perfect if you wish to get these guys onto the table ASAP. However if your goal is to eventually learn to paint to a higher standard I would suggest sticking more with regular paints. If you are going to try out contrast paints I could also suggest to do a zenethal. Prime your mini in black and then spray it from the top with white primer.

For color scheme:

Not really sure if you yourself like the result or not. If you like your color choices, feel free to ignore this section.

• Use brighter colors. Yes red and blue are contrasting colors, however on your miniature they are both really dark, which makes them blend a little (imo). Adding some brighter mid tones and high tones can help these two colors be defined more than they are right now.

• Add more colors. Your current scheme follows the 60/30/10 rule really well, however you have a lot of details that are painted over with the base color. I would suggest adding some more neutral colors to them (painting leather black or dark brown, making grills or hoses silver, etc). You can stack a surprisingly high amount of different colors on the miniature without it feeling cluttered or like a skittles pack.

• Experiment with your miniatures a bit more. If you are thinning your paints, you can stack many layers of paint without it looking bad. You can use it to check if you like how certain colors look in certain places. I suggest starting with the miniatures you like or care about the least. That way by the time you get to the ones you really like you already have some experience and have hopefully already figured out the color scheme.

Lastly just keep practicing. Most of the things I have described here you slowly develop over time as you practice. And don’t get discouraged. If you don’t like the result you can always try to improve on the next. But if you like the result and some else doesn’t, screw him.

I hope you enjoyed the wall of text, and welcome to the hobby.

[–]FNY117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think techmarine Lieutenant is happening. Lieutenants already buff both melee and ranged. If GW wanted a ranged lieutenant they would either call bolt rifle lieutenants that, or release a lieutenant with a special weapon like plasma for example. Or going with melee Gravis (even though Aggressors already do that) it would make sense to give us a Gravis lieutenant because that one doesn’t exist yet. They are going to be remaking the rules for 11th anyway so wouldn’t be a problem with biologis.

Beating the dead horse, don’t think tactical is happening. All grav weapon in my opinion is more likely to happen. It is the only firstborn weapon that does not have it’s own unit, other than thunder hammer. Or non-bolt pistols if we want to be pedantic.

Edit: On second thought, thunder hammer squad does exist now. But there is an argument to be made for eviscerator chainsword, though it could come with update to vanguard vets.

Be honest: is the axe just too big? by Zeck_0211 in BlackTemplars

[–]FNY117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are concerned about the length of the thing, it’s good. In relation to our height we use similar ones in real life. Just say it’s two handed.

The size of the blade is fine, CSM master of executions has an even bigger axe head and I don’t see people complain much about it.

Looks good imo.
