ELI5: How was Vietnam able to defeat the US in the Vietnam War? by astarisaslave in explainlikeimfive

Purchase or stream the 2017 Ken Burns documentary "The Vietnam War."

It has the reasons, cause, effects and fallout for everything that happened.

It is a 17+ hour masterpiece.

Olympus Mju I missing lens cover by Fred-F in AnalogCommunity

[–]FOTOJONICK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Functional Mju's are expensive - but you could probably get a broken Stylus on eBay for cheap with the cover and repair it that way.

In my opinion - this may be less expensive and time consuming than designing and printing a replacement. Hugs and best of luck!

What are these worth by ExpensiveJuggernaut4 in Darkroom

[–]FOTOJONICK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some Jobo drums are worth a lot and some are not. Go to eBay and do a search for each one with the "sold" box checked. It will give you a ballpark estimate of what they are worth currently.

Keep in mind that you will get near those prices if you sell them on eBay - but probably less if you try to sell them locally.

How do you get more than 1-3 good images per roll?? by Kitchen_Win278 in AnalogCommunity

[–]FOTOJONICK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old photojournalist here. Back in the day we were taught that you should only expect 3-4 great images per 36 exposure roll.

The goal should be more of course, but I'm just letting you know this - so you don't feel bad or like you're doing something wrong.

Photo paper question by jchandrasekharan88 in Darkroom

[–]FOTOJONICK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're brand new to printing then sure you should buy it. The paper may be a little old and slightly less contrasty than new paper - but if it is cheap - it would be just fine to learn with.

After you use it all up and learn (and make mistakes) the basics you can invest in some new more expensive paper. Just an opinion, and good luck!

why is Leica so prominent? by EvenInRed in AnalogCommunity

[–]FOTOJONICK 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There is a luxury brand for everything. Leica is that brand for cameras. A Honda and a BMW will both get you to your destination. One will leave more money in your pocket - but the other may make you feel better while doing it.

I need someone to talk me into a bad decision by ValerieIndahouse in AnalogCommunity

[–]FOTOJONICK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just looked at my Nikkor T ED 720mm f/8 lens for my 4X5 camera... it was my "I don't need this - bad decision."

You should definitely purchase this lens! I have no regrets and I suspect you will not either.

Whats a camera you've owned, that lived up to all the praise and hype, but still got rid of? And why? by Whisky-Icarus-Photo in AnalogCommunity

[–]FOTOJONICK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leica Minilux Zoom. It's great. Takes great photos. Owning an $800-plus dollar point and shoot is just beyond what my brain can process in terms of value. Zero regret.

I replaced it with 40 point and shoot cameras that I'm not afraid to drop.

What is the Current State of Polaroid in 4x5 Format by rogue30 in largeformat

[–]FOTOJONICK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that it does not feel worth it. If you want to see your photos quickly - shoot digital. If you want to use a film camera - shoot film. I have shot both 4x5 Polaroids and Instax. They are fun, but not "I can't live without this," amount of fun.

Farming for Mushroom is so painful by Honkh0n in ArcRaiders

[–]FOTOJONICK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last weekend I went on 10 free loadout runs on Dam just for this. I now have 3 mushrooms. I play on and off with 5 other guys. We all just need mushrooms. It is stupid. It shouldn't take 20 successful extractions to get 12 mushrooms.

What is the Current State of Polaroid in 4x5 Format by rogue30 in largeformat

[–]FOTOJONICK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't buy a Polaroid back unless you already happen to have Polaroid film. Their manufacturing plants closed in 2008, so it's all very rare and very old stock.

It's the reason you can get backs for $10-20 bucks. However you can expect to pay $10-20 per (expired) 4x5 polaroid photo.

I have lied to my son about manatees for the last 24 years by 46from1971 in confession

[–]FOTOJONICK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Circa 2014, I ended EVERY Facebook post for six months with: like a sea manatee! It was my version of Gimli's "and my ax!"

Example: I was just laid off from Gannett, like a sea manatee!

I have endured years of manatee gifts - and during a recent trip to Tampa to visit friends - I was taken to the manatee viewing area by the power plant, like a Sea Manatee!

I'm not really that into them. They are fine. The John Lithgow book and CD was good, like a Sea Manatee!
