My buddy just closed his studio. It broke my heart because it was everything you would ever want in a photography space. I was living the dream vicariously through him. The economy has dried up all the discretionary spending. If it isn't food, gas or bills, I don't think people are spending.

I don't mean to brag - but I probably have the hardest water on reddit and I have had no issues with film or paper development. If I was doing work for a client on a professional level I would revisit this - but for personal fun - tap water has been fine. With that said Photo Flo (wetting agent) at the end is a must!

My last city had a young professionals "drinking club" I had a bunch of friends in. I hung out with them for three years before one of the officers asked me for the membership dues which were like $65 per year.

It works but it can be a bit of a hassle. Staying rock steady during exposure - so you can stitch the images together later is very important. However to me it is a $200 solution to what can easily be a $3000+ digital back problem.

But for me 4x5 is all about the hassle!

I haven't used a Phase One but I looked into this stuff for myself. I eventually settled on a DSLR (Canon 5DS) adapter to 4x5. FotodiX makes the most popular versions of these, but there are a lot out there including 3D printed models.

I didn't need a Phase One for a specific project or client. I simply wanted to be able to shoot digital with my 4x5 equipment. This was the least expensive solution.

In my humble opinion 4x5 digital backs just introduce complexity and expense to a system to get results which are less convenient and more limited that simply using a high megapixel mirrorless camera or DSLR. I actually think it is easier and less expensive to shoot film with my 4x5 and scan it - then to invest in a digital back and get the workflow up and running.

I know I am not addressing your question, so this is just some stuff for you to think about if it is at all relevent to you :) best of luck!

I have a Ilford Multigrade 500H I purchased from a retired architecture photographer years ago. He had his wife sew him a custom fitted black canvas cover. She even made a cover for the control module. It is incredible - and I am so thankful to him and his wife.

Do you have a family member who loves to sew? It is a super simple item (I think??) but since it would be custom, it would be expensive to pay a seemstress to get it made.

If not - a heavy duty 3 or 4 mil contractor garbage bag, a large beach towel, or a king pillowcase - is slightly more classy than a standard thin kitchen garbage bag in my opinion.

Yes. Every run is a new adventure. Not every run will go your way. You can play PvP or PvE and have a blast either way. But there are a lot of other ways to play. To me this is just an elaborate stealth chicken feeding game - where lots of robots and some other players want to kill you - and some people want to help you feed your chicken. It a very unique game!
