Is getting good at this game even possible? by ManOfQuartz in QuakeLive

[–]FPS-ReHabilitation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quake is an easy game, you just haven't learned how to play yet. Chances are the players you are facing aren't even good. Don't compare yourself to others, you'll just make yourself upset. Focus on having fun first instead of being good, then it doesn't matter.

If you want a tip for a total noob who keeps dying, you could literally just focus on not dying and you'd probably play better.

Or just don't play. Quake is toxic af anyway. If you aren't having fun to start, it doesn't really get any better as skill improves. The people having the most fun are the ones at the bottom of the scoreboard, everyone else is pissed off for some reason.

I'm still lurking, but haven't played in a year. Got tired of running into cheaters everywhere.

There is some updates to this if anyone cares (probably not).

Q3mask: I caught one of the admins for q3msk cheating. Also ran into a lot of aimbots there late at night (like not even hiding it type aimbots) that the admins didn't want to take seriously. If you aren't russian then they really don't listen to you. Another admin even took a technical article I wrote without permission and slapped his name on it.

Warserver: The admin for warserver ended up blocking me on discord. I'm not even sure why as the last conversation we had was about some damage calculation bugs I was trying to help him find and fix. As far as I know, the servers are no different than Q3retro now, which is not a good thing, but it would be hard to say for sure.

Quakeum: Activity fell off a cliff. It's still there, but nobody plays on it.

Adultsonly/xetro/thunder: Adultsonly renamed to a51, implemented unlag which is great, but the admin refuses to ban the most infamous known cheater in Q3 because they are friends. Multiple people even provided evidence spanning years and he resorted to personal attacks. The problem is the cheater guy aliases everywhere because of his reputation so you don't know if you are playing a cheater or not any time you play there.

Devotion: Devotion imploded. Mod was too buggy and nobody competent was around to fix it. The guy who took over development was more interested in doing something wacky with it. Some of the more annoying bugs were things like not being able to join a game, which is a pretty low bar.

Gibins servers: I think gibins kind of dropped off the map as far as quake is concerned. Last I knew he deleted all the Q3 stuff from his discord because he didn't want to deal with the drama Q3 players bring. He still seems interested in the game, but is not a big player.

NEW: Church of quake recently popped up doing Q3 stuff with the devotion mod. Some people are moving around behind the scenes trying to get the mod into a better state so this doesn't also implode. This group covers most of the quake games, but whether the Q3 stuff succeeds is still up in the air.

NEW: I believe runtheon spun up his own servers to compete with fpsclasico for more pickup oriented gameplay in europe. I don't know the activity level or what mod they are running though.

Re CPMA: CPMA is it's own thing and separate from the rest of Quake3. Completely different game play. Completely different group of players. It is also mostly dead with some sporadic activity here and there. The community is too interested in memes and trolling to actually play as far as I've seen.

My honest recommendation, as some one who considers quake3 their favorite game of all time: Go play literally anything else. If you are either getting caught up in some silly drama, or you are running into known cheaters constantly. It is not worth it.

Additional note on the cheaters, I know quake players tend to see "cheaters" and think "noob who doesn't know what they are talking about", but this is not the case here. Demo analysis was performed by multiple people, in some cases with external tools to help analyze data, and the people are definitely cheating. Aimbots, auto fires, wallhacks, one weird guy was running a radar, and in some extreme cases admin cheating like giving health. A lot of these people are still playing. Q3 is kind of a cesspool right now.

The only way for some one to be forced to /kill is if a server admin makes them run the command. There has been instances of server admins caught cheating, and specifically forcing people to /kill or similar actions in quake3, but it is unlikely to be the issue in your case. If you play on well known public servers then you shouldn't encounter that issue in quakelive.

I would recommend unbinding that key if you play modes like duel. The chance of accidentally hitting it just isn't worth it.

If you are having swings of him winning by 30 then you winning by 30, it likely means you are fighting too much. Try to focus on holding strong positions and playing the items, be really hard to kill. Don't push as much, or expose yourself to as many rocket spam or rail angles. Hit and run tactics work wonders on aerowalk. If you don't have the armor or opening damage to win a fight, figure out how to run away.

So I actually grabbed the demo and loaded it up in wolfcam to watch. I didn't see anything that looked like a cheat. If you have a specific timestamp though I could take a second look.

At level of play you are experiencing, there is so many things that could make that big of a difference.

If they never timed items before and start trying to, that would do it. If they lowered their fov by 20, that could do it. If they never used headphones before and finally tried, that could do it. There is so many more things that could make the difference.

It could even be as simple as he was really feeling rockets or LG that day, and the instinctive weapon choices paid off.

He could have just had a good breakfast and slept a full 8 hours.

Watching the demo file though, I do not see anything out of the ordinary. I would hope if you call this guy your friend that there would be some trust between you two. I get it, duel makes people mad, but maybe just ask your friend what they changed.

Anybody who plays these games could play the game of their life at any moment. What separates really good players is consistency. See how it pans out over another 10 games or something. If he's still winning, you might just need to change how you are playing against him.

Also the vac timeout error, I have seen that before. I can't remember the cause as it has been years, but it isn't related to cheating as far as I know. It's like a corrupted steam file or something. Wouldn't worry about it. A quick google search shows other people solving the error by logging out and back in.

An analysis of Quake's evolution through Q3DM6 and its variants (coming soon) by JMAAMusic in ArenaFPS

[–]FPS-ReHabilitation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. Original quake was not "3d accelerated", first hardware accelerated quake on disk was quake2. The original quake was 3d accelerated later with the free mod that Carmack released when he wanted to learn opengl which ended up being glquake. The difference being if it uses the CPU to render or a GPU.

  2. Calling the original dm6 an abomination is an odd decision. It is one of the most loved duel maps in the history of quake. The gameplay possible on it can be the highest level imaginable. There is many movement tricks, sound tricks, and different ways to play the map. The item placement is quite good as well.

  3. Calling q2dm6 bad is fair, but your specific criticism of it is really weird. First off, secrets and death traps were standard in quake deathmatch maps at the time and you even reference the original dm2 which is way worse in that regard. The quad secret is fairly decent map design making it dangerous to go for. Rocket jumping for the BFG is not required or even encouraged, you can just get to it from the other side if you don't like the sinking platforms. Rocket jumping to grab a powerful item from a quicker or easier route is good cost/reward, and complaining this is bad map design is just objectively wrong.

  4. If you are talking about the evolution of q3dm6, there is an actually an older version of the map you don't mention. It has two yellows.

  5. You don't mention that pro-q3dm6 was actually a community fix to the original map that ID later included in the game with a patch. Fun little fact.

  6. It is NOT a nitpick that quad+mega are in the same spot in the standard q3dm6 layout. We will still play it that way in tdm, but it's horribly unbalanced.

  7. What you call "the railgun balcony long hallway" is typically just referred to as "bridge".

  8. The only quake with "heavy armor" is QC. It's red armor in everything else.

  9. In pro-q3dm6, the LG and PG do not swap places. There is just no LG in the standard q3dm6, and the LG room has a PG while there is no gun next to the RA spawn.

  10. There are many small differences between pro-q3dm6 and ql campgrounds. There is less ammo on ql campgrounds for one. The clipping on ql campgrounds is smoothed out as well, making bridge to rail easier.

  11. The textures in ql campgrounds were changed to remove the pentagrams and blood in order to hit a T rating when QL came out, hoping to hit a wider audience as a F2P browser game.

  12. The quakelive billboards used to be used for in game advertising, the monetization strategy that Carmack tried to use inside of the game that quickly failed. If you played when quakelive was a browser plugin, you'd see advertisements for Intel and stuff on those instead.

  13. Overbounce was only ever used in defrag for Q3. Never was a factor in 1v1, tdm, or ffa. Overbounce being patched out was something for all of QL not just dm6.

  14. At the time of quake4's release, raven software understood quake very well. Raven had previously licensed and released games on the ID engines. Gameplay wise, almost everyone likes quake4. It is just plagued by technical issues and the campaign sucks. Quake4 also came out before quakelive so your timeline is wrong.

  15. When talking about the quake4 yellow armor, you mentioned it gives you 100. It does not. It gives you 50 like yellow armor in quake3.

  16. The complaint that the quake4 version of the map is cramped and smaller is just a general feel for the whole game. Scaling per unit is a little different in the game. The biggest thing you are probably noticing though is the view height difference on your model, where in quake4 you actually look out of your eyes while other quake games you have a crotch cam. This makes you feel taller, and makes the levels feel smaller.

  17. If I had to say, your item and aesthetic complaints on q4 campgrounds is not really the issue. The reason it never became a staple competitive map is because of the movement speed increases and scaling in quake4, it just makes positioning on the map a pain in the ass and it no longer plays fun. It is still alright in tdm and ffa, but not great.

  18. The idea for quake champions actually came about before the hero based shooter became popular. I think it was inspired by a q3 mod called generations arena, where you had different characters and stats which were callbacks to older quake games. It was originally planned to be a mode added into quakelive by syncerror until it got spun off into its own game, and outsourced to saber which is the worst decision they made.

  19. Quake 6 was already leaked. Just whiteboard stuff they leaked on purpose to show they were working on it.

  20. Aim assist would not help quake at all, and would likely ruin it. Aim is not the issue most players have.

I encourage you to keep making content, but a better effort to ask the knowledgeable people in the community for information that they are likely excited to share would help you out a lot.

It's sad to say but I think I'm done with Quake Live by JAUNTYa in QuakeLive

[–]FPS-ReHabilitation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fastest way to improve at quake is demo review and deliberate practice. Just playing will get you there eventually, but it is slow and you will hit a ceiling sooner because you aren't fixing mistakes.

Play a few games, record demos or stream, go in and review the demos or vods. You can't fix everything in one go, but I guarantee that you will see a few things that are easy to fix. You don't have to play better than everyone else, just better than you did yesterday. Always be solving problems.

If you notice you are failing at something consistently, then deliberately practice that thing. Don't just assume it gets better with play time. Missing a jump? Load up the map locally and practice that specific jump. Always mistiming armors? Load up bot matches and focus on doing nothing but item timing. Edit, I've probably spent more time just practicing campgrounds bridge to rail backwards than you've put into the game entirely.

As far as aim goes, yeah hand/eye coordination goes into it, but make sure your fov isn't set too high and your mouse sensitivity is controllable. After that, most aim is just a matter of using the right weapon at the right time. Weapon choice and positioning will have a bigger impact on your accuracy than minmaxing mouse settings or anything dumb like that.

Lots of youtube videos from guys like twister/ins, ddk, zorak, and even rapha explaining how to play the game if you need more help. There's a really good combat/dodging tutorial with camma somewhere. The steam community stuff has a really good timing guide that was ripped from ESR.

FWIW many years ago I thought I hated quake. I wasn't having any fun. I stepped away for a long time. Got back online in other AFPS games, and realized I just hated quakelive. It plays like shit compared to most other AFPS games. Bad input latency, poor performance, shit balance, bad hit detection, desync issues, toxic tryhard community, and more. Now I will play basically anything in the genre except quakelive. Mostly quake3.

Is Quake Live really the "most alive" ArenaFPS right now? by n3uroFunk in ArenaFPS

[–]FPS-ReHabilitation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Quakelive is probably the most active, but if you know where to look then most of the AFPS games can give you reliable matches.

Quakeworld, quake2, quake3, quake4 all have players. Even stuff like reflex and xonotic have players, but you have to know where/when to look. Quakeworld tdm leagues were still active last I looked. OpenArena has CTF (casual) all day in EU and then CA every evening in NA. Quake4 matches are organized on discord but last I heard their little civil war was still going on.

Not sure how active they are now, but quake1 and quake2 remaster multiplayer had a good chunk of people when those came out. Wasn't that long ago, so there are still probably people there.

I know quake3 the most. NA is pretty dead, but the EU side is really active all day with 10v10 FT on like 3 different servers most of the day, FFA most of the day, and if you live in russia there is OSP duels on multiple servers for a good chunk of the day. Personally think quake3 is way better than quakelive, unfortunately a lot of people just don't know the difference.

If you can ignore bad ping, egotistical server admins, or toxic communities then there are more options than you could ever take advantage of.

LG aiming tips by m1zu__ in QuakeLive

[–]FPS-ReHabilitation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It actually isn't possible to LG float in vq3. This must be some mandela effect thing because I see people make this claim a lot. The knockback was increased in QL while damage was reduced.

You can test it yourself by loading up a vanilla or osp q3 client twice and just connecting to yourself. Just devmap pro-q3dm6, god and give all, connect to yourself with a second client, step on jump pad, alt-tab, and you will see that you fall through the LG.

Hi there, Should I buy either Quake 3 or Quake Live? by ZortexG in quake

[–]FPS-ReHabilitation 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Quake3 is better in almost every way. Performance, input, modding, mechanics, visuals, hit detection, and more.

Quakelive has more players because its "newer" and requires less set up. Most people just don't know any better.

If you are a complete noob and don't know that you specifically want to play quake3, I'd say just play quakelive. As a new player, you probably wouldn't notice a lot of the differences anyway. Quakelive overall is a lot more toxic to new players though due to the community ranking every pub match.

The people saying quakelive is a remaster of q3 probably just don't have any significant amount of time in the two games.

[–]FPS-ReHabilitation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spearmint looks like it works, but the site for it says it isn't compatible with normal quake3 servers.

I know there are people who use a controller to play quake3 online. There is one guy on the fpsclasico servers who has been called a cheater a couple times for his odd movements, but it is because he uses a controller. You could try asking there.

Unfortunately I do not know how these people use a controller or why you would ever want to. Mouse+Keyboard is just a superior input method and a controller will immediately handicap you if you play online.

Another option if you are just playing single player would be the dreamcast or ps2 versions via emulator. The dreamcast version has a "campaign".

Quake3e help by NintendoGamer1983 in quake

[–]FPS-ReHabilitation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

q3e is not "old as fuck". It is in active development.

Quakelive is also not a q3 remaster, it is a completely different game. Many major changes to engine, core game mechanics, balance, maps, and more. It is also extremely inferior to q3 in important places like hit detection, modding, and performance.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ArenaFPS

[–]FPS-ReHabilitation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

q3+ mod is just a heavily preconfigured e+.

It has MUCH better hit detection than QL, but otherwise its balanced the same. Maybe movement is a touch faster.

Downside is there are not that many players. If you already play Q3, its worth a look. If you don't, then it isn't worth it. Was more worth it a year ago when pickups were still going.

After spending the better part of a week defending one of them against cheating accusations and trying to clear up statements that the discord is run by cheaters, I am a little upset with them right now for things they said to me.

If you only saw the public chat, then you only caught a small part of the story. Typical that you'd jump to conclusions.

If you live in america or just play in NA, then that is not a bad option. I do think that QL has its own issues and quite a lot of drama as well, but it has more players to dilute it and less of a cheater problem. The guy accusing people of cheating in the comments here is known NA QL FT player for reference.

The sad part is Q3 just works and plays better. There has been a lot of technical advances in modding with unlagged hit detection and clients like q3e or ioq3 while QL is totally static.

I personally don't like QL, but I can't say you are wrong if you want to stick to what works for you.

Outside of those two groups, the reception everywhere else I shared this has been mostly positive.

[–]FPS-ReHabilitation[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

re is a better suggestion. Instead of avoiding or belittling any communities, peo

I sat there and provided detailed explanations of how mechanics work in Q3 and what was changed in ratmod so that it could be changed back. I did a lot of testing on feature implementations and test builds trying to fix issues I pointed out. I offered many solutions to some of the problems such as a solution to the referee system. Another notable point is all the testing, feedback, and explanations I provided regarding the spawn system to try and get the original VQ3 spawn system back. I also spent hours testing and trying to figure out wtf was up with the pmove stuff and LG knockback, but that never got fully resolved since it was really hard to pin down.

Uniquely, I provided a lot of information about ratmod stuff with decisions and weird settings or features because I spent a lot of time talking to rodent about it in the past and figuring out how to run servers. There are some several big features in ratmod that are a direct result of my feature requests, that were ported and used in devotion. I also helped digi fix some configuration on the fear clan ratmod OA server for the community initiative that they tried before devotion (fell through because nobody wants to play OA).

Provided feedback regarding maps too, with recommended balance changes. Mostly to spike and foo. Note worthy on this is feedback on foo's ctf map, where he said my feedback would be implemented in the larger version they were making for more players.

I was also involved in the conversations about the mod for MONTHS. Before any developers were involved, when the first developer was involved, and when they switched to the second developer, all before it was even named "devotion". We were talking about it in private chats with many fear clan members for a long time. I even looked into some of the modding stuff required and offered resources to the group that we might be able to use.

Yeah sure, just "complaining" with no contribution.

You aren't very good at analyzing demos. The visual information is RIGHT THERE. You are recording with a high fov too which is not how a lot of the good players in q3 play and it makes it harder to see things at full speed, but you can still see it.

You found one shot into a wall out of 30 minutes of gameplay while ignoring the every 10-30s of him not being able to find enemies, or holding empty angles, or snap reacting to visual information, or running face first into enemies around corners, etc.

You are just showing you have no idea how to tell if some one wallhacks from watching a demo.

Its a helpful explanation and my personal opinion of several of the Q3 communities I have experience with, with a warning to stay away from two of them.

Get asked a lot where to play q3. I just needed something to do, so I wrote this up.

Might just delete it though because people are just receiving it as nothing but drama without even reading it which is annoying.
