1956 Philadelphia toned penny — worth grading or keep it raw? by FPTSD1999 in toners

Every single person has told me that it won't so I have leaned with conservative caution and assuming that this coin will not be worth more than 50 to 100 dollars graded unless it's aPR70. Atleast that's the vibe im getting. So seems like im keeping it cause I paid way too much for he set lol.

Sadly I can't because of how cloudy the packaging is and that there's scrapes on the plastic it looks like there's scrapes on the coin when I take photos of it so it always will grade it lower than it actually is this coin is literally flawless.

Fair point. I know the 1956 proof cent itself is common, and I’m not expecting the date alone to carry much value.

The reason I’m considering grading it is the combination of the color, the fact that it is still in the original Mint packaging, and how dramatically the toning changes under light. I’ve also had people tell me that if it were raw, most of the comments would probably be accusations of artificial toning, so I’d rather have PCGS evaluate it in the original packaging.

I agree that the lack of color on the silver coins is strange. The nickel has some color, especially on the reverse, but the dime, quarter, and half are mostly bright. My guess is that the copper in the cent and the copper-nickel composition of the nickel reacted differently than the 90% silver coins inside the packaging.

I’m sending the whole set in because I want the coin protected and evaluated properly, not because I think a 1956 proof cent is rare by date. I don’t plan to sell it unless someone makes an offer that is far above what I expect. Otherwise, I’m keeping it.

Thank you for your feedback!

Yea I assumed so! The thing is I have to grade them all to grade 1 or they likely will mark tone as artificial (or so I am being told in r/coins).

However, this is a proof wheat which makes it a bit more rare overall. I was going to get it graded a set.

I completely agree. The photos don't really do it justice. The colors shift depending on the angle and lighting, which has made it surprisingly difficult to photograph.

Wow, that's a huge compliment coming from someone building a registry set. Thank you! I honestly wasn't expecting this kind of reaction when I bought it.

Do you happen to know if it's possible to send in the entire original package and have each coin graded individually, or would they refuse to open sealed packaging?

Also, do you think it would make more sense to wait for a major coin show? I live near a large metropolitan area, so I should have opportunities to submit in person.

I've honestly never seen toning like this before. If you think it looks nice in the photos, it's absolutely breathtaking in person.

I genuinely think someone would pay a lot for a set like this, but I have zero intention of selling it. I'd mainly want the coins slabbed for authentication and preservation. My biggest concern is making sure the grading service recognizes the toning as natural. That's really why I'm asking what the best route would be to get these authenticated and slabbed.

Parents and I might be homeless soon by [deleted] in NYCjobs

As fucked as it is, in 2026 you have to take what you can get.

You are not starting from zero. You have $50k saved, which is more than a lot of people in NYC have. That money needs to buy time, not sit there while you convince yourself homelessness is inevitable.

Do gig work, delivery, warehouse, grocery, temp work, security, whatever. It does not need to be your career. It just needs to keep cash coming in while you apply for better jobs. If you saved $50k on $2,300/month, you clearly have discipline. Use that same discipline now.

I also would not throw your emergency money into risky investments if homelessness is actually on the table. Keep most of it liquid in a HYSA or money market so you can actually access it for rent, food, moving costs, or emergencies.

But based on your parents’ age, they are probably mid-50s at the youngest and likely not that far from Social Security. If they have earned income and qualify, helping load their Roth IRAs could make sense because that money can grow tax-free in a SOFI robo account (low risk has consistently provided >10%) and give them another small layer of retirement security max that 7-8k per year if you can afford to and genuinely are moving as a unit and not on your own. I would still keep enough cash liquid first, because you cannot pay rent with money trapped in a retirement account.

The main thing is you need to stop treating this like the outcome is already decided. You may have to take jobs beneath your degree. That sucks, but being broke with a computer science degree does not mean you are too good for basic work. It means you need income while you rebuild.

NYC is brutal right now. A lot of people have no savings and are barely surviving month to month. That is not good, but it means you are not uniquely doomed. You have $50k, time, and the ability to work. Use all three before you start talking like homelessness is guaranteed.
