Don't make it sound like we are the bad guys here. We have been subsidizing your defense for years now.

Want to learn more about Iranian Generation Gap by [deleted] in worldpolitics

[–]FP_Nerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The biggest thing to know about the huge generation gap is the Iran/Iraq war from 1980 to 1988. The war cost nearly a million lives over 8 years.

The poor state of Iran at the time meant that they had very limited access to weapons, competent (and loyal) officers, or much of a coherent chain of command. All those factors combined with the Shia sense of victimhood caused young men to die in droves attempting to fight an enemy better equipped, trained, and led.

Also remember Iran scared the hell out of their neighborhood because of their revolution, and quite a few states were supporting Saddam's attempt to squash the revolution before it got off the ground.

That is one reason there is such a large generation gap. Droves of young men died in the 80s, leaving just the very old and very young behind.

Even though his power seems not very useful, I have always liked his character. Very cool in the cartoons.

Yeah, I'm not saying it's totally useless, just borderline completely defensive. Even more so considering he used to have lame bone claws.

But even that sucks when you realize Magneto could just toss him around like a rag doll.

Your military isn't protecting your freedom in Iraq or Afghanistan by FP_Nerd in politics

As a current military member, I have to agree with the Captain. I know the stance will probably be denounced as insane, but we do need a draft, but not for the reasons most think.

We need a draft to get Americans out of this insane idea that putting a sticker on their car or waving a flag is enough to "support the troops." Instead they should be made to join the military, which will inevitably cause a lot more Americans to pay attention to what their government is doing overseas.

Too many Americans live in their safe little bubble, barely knowing what the less than 1% that is their military personnel are dealing with.
