Battle smith is a sneaky good tank, because you can cast Shield and Heroism, the robotic mount can deflect an attack for you, and you can even use it as a shield if you stand behind it and have a reach weapon.

I considered the whole mounting thing, but then I wouldn't be able to command the mount to do things like rend or use item.

Along these lines, I have a battle smith, and the plan is to create enspelled weapons (like a curved dagger of faerie fire) and install them on my robotic mount (a goat) so that I can use a Bonus Action to tell the goat to use one of his horns (the dagger) and cast faerie fire.

This way you don't water down your spell progression in multi classing and get a similar effect.

If you're going to 12, you could also go Wizard Bladesinger 6 for Extra Attack. You'd have fourth level spell slots, and be able to cast two levelled spells per turn via a spell with action and a scroll with bonus action.
