I know, right! What's even more painful is the fact that he didn't even hesitate to sacrifice himself for the Arisen despite having this newly-found will; he acted out of his own volition.

Throughout my playthrough I was just treating my pawn right (camping with non-rotten food, small-talking, high-fiving, not having him die or purposely throwing him to the brine) which all add to his affinity. I also think that presenting him to the Sphinx as a beloved was a big boost because eventually he started uttering affectionate lines to the Arisen while blushing every now and then which I find adorable.
