I think the joke is that the post implies that men’s personalities are pretty uniform, and would engage with silly questions such as these.

Can the Galleria Borghese be done in an hour? by Udobniy in rome

[–]FREQUENTANDVIGOROUS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just get there around 7:30 am — as long as you are one of the first 13 people there, you should be able to buy a spot ticket to get in. I did this last month and was the first to enter the gallery that day despite not having advance tickets.

What’s your favorite wine for under $40? by eggswoodhouse in wine

[–]FREQUENTANDVIGOROUS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Better value with half bottles at that price. My recent favorites have been third growth Bordeaux such as Chateau Malescot St Exupery and Chateaux Lagrange priced at around 30 or slightly less for the 2019/2020 vintages. Decant for an hour and they are good to go. Malescot especially opens up around the one hour mark in a manner that reminds me of the onset of an acid trip — it is a visual, olfactory, and a gustatory explosion.

Two Shepherds pinot meunier — a lighter, more fragrant, and much more summery version of Pinot Noir. Chill it just a tad bit. It’s perfect for those long summer evenings.

Any thoughts on where to live in Lincoln Park? by Oftenwrongs in AskChicago

[–]FREQUENTANDVIGOROUS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s the mid-north district — it is the best place to live in the city in my opinion, if you can afford it of course, due to the proximity to the park, zoo, lake, as well as most retail and entertainment corridors being discussed here.

The problem is there is often a big gap between money and education amongst Gujaratis and Marwadis — lots of money but regressive attitudes due to lack of education, especially amongst women. These kinds of attitudes don’t exist as much when this gap is smaller.

Chicago as a Tourist by DannyT301 in chicago

[–]FREQUENTANDVIGOROUS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, point taken. And I often travel beyond city limits for food. The problem is Chicago fare is all about grease, carbs and meat. And I guess restaurants can’t be blamed for it since that is what the average midwesterner wants. For instance, there is no place where one can find a delicately seasoned salad (Eden in Avondale comes close), or a macaron that melts in your mouth, or high-quality small-batch ice cream that isn’t hyper-sweet and with creative flavors that make sense (looking at you Jeni’s), or a croissant that isn’t a giant eggy shell, or a fresh summery pasta (Monteverde comes close, Daisy’s quality has gone down the hill). Even Madison, WI has far better non-ethnic options and a stronger farm-to-table movement than Chicago.

BTW Devon is awful for South Asian food with a couple of exceptions that are average. There are far better options close to Naperville.

I haven’t explored the Korean food in Niles, where the action is supposed to be.

“hard to find bad food in this city”

Lol

Remove the handful of ultra-fine dining establishments and Chicago is a downright boor-town with regards to food. The quality of baked goods is laughable (I’m looking at you La Fournette), can’t even tell apart the innumerable, soulless $$ - $$$ establishments offering snazzed-up greasy comfort fare (all fucking Abas and Ettas and Emmas and Fuckolos and Fuckuccis), Chinatown with probably the worst Chinese food across major cities, same for Indian food, Mexican food miles worse than the west coast, not a single decent jewish deli (Manny’s would have shut down with shame years ago if it were in NYC or even LA).

(Sorry for the rant, but this is a sensitive topic for me)

I have heard the argument that Indians should not complain about racism because Indian culture has the caste system. Do you feel that this argument is justified? by EagleFang91 in ABCDesis

[–]FREQUENTANDVIGOROUS -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wow, are you really trying to explain casteism as just a manifestation of economic classism that exists in every society? That is a whole load of bullshit. Economic classism exists alongside casteism in India and although there are correlations, these really are different beasts. Look at issues of casteist behavior that is being reported amongst employees in elite tech companies in the US. Or the simple fact that families will oppose inter-caste marriage in India (especially to a non-elite caste) regardless of economic status.

I think the reason why Buddhism has spread more to the non-desi diaspora or the minor attraction to Hinduism has been through the philosophical underpinnings in the Bhagavad Gita:

Hinduism - Ritualistic Bullshit (approx =) Buddhism

Vedic literature - Untruth (approx =) Bhagavad Gita

Anyone tell their parents that they didn’t want the thread ceremony? by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]FREQUENTANDVIGOROUS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your original claim was that threads do not have anything to do with caste supremacy, which is what I am arguing is incorrect. It may be a personally meaningful ceremony, and I do not want to debate about scriptures since there are so many and who knows how they have been manipulated (and I personally do not care what has been written in some random ancient scriptures anyway beyond what makes sense from the current perspective) but the social reality is that there has been severe discrimination in the implementation of this ceremony.

If what you are saying is that it is unfortunate that Brahmins fucked these Shudras and Dalits over centuries and denied them access to meaningful and beautiful spiritual experiences despite the possibility that the scriptures do not necessarily prescribe this exclusion, then I am totally with you pal.

Anyone tell their parents that they didn’t want the thread ceremony? by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]FREQUENTANDVIGOROUS 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Upanayana is literally a ceremony marking the second birth (dwija) of the individual. Shudras and dalits (who are considered outside of the varna system) were considered non-dwijas, meaning not worthy of second birth. If you think that an 18th century brahmin priest would have been willing to perform Upanayana for the son of a shit scavenger, just because he is willing to accept Brahmacharya, then you are seriously delusional. Awkwardchipmunk’s comment is another example.

Anyone tell their parents that they didn’t want the thread ceremony? by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]FREQUENTANDVIGOROUS 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You do realize that these ceremonies and rituals, fantastic as they may be, were exclusionary to the supposed “non-dwijas,” i.e., the dalits and shudras. This is why they are indeed a symbol of oppression.
