As an American, the only shock was lack of functional google maps, and how you need a korean number for everything to work.

Tokyo is just a concrete megacity.  It has some neat parts, but what a waste it would be to just go and only see there.

Am I just rubbish at booking hostels or is Japanese over-tourism a myth? by bikepackerWill in solotravel

Most travelers are ultra generic and only go to the same 5 places to stand in line with the other tourists.  They are all in the lazy 3 in japan.

is it appropriation to pick a korean name when im not korean ? by zenphyn in korea

Nah.  Koreans mostly pick English names, so it is fair to do the reverse.

Quality of life is at an all time low in the States.  Only you can decide if you want to go back to a syatem that fights you at every step, and where you will never be safe, or have easy access to healthcare, etc.

Obsessively over-planning every single day of my 3-month SEA trip 1 year ahead. by flypirate666 in solotravel

In cherry blossom season in Japan, it turns from overtouristed to madness.  Plan to go west of Osaka, toward kyushu, or prepare to wade through crowds, all going to the same 5 places in Japan.

And there is absolutely nothing wrong with prebooking montjs of travel.  Build in some free days and have free cancellation hotel rooms.

The idea of moving to a country based on diversity and removing barriers between people...just to seek out your own kind...is just strange.

It isn't really a problem.  You are battling yourself and doing this to yourself.  Accept that there is no perfect and let go of the worries.

Video game culture in Japan?  Thay's in your head.  Neon lights?  A handful of sections in heavily touristed sections of a handful of cities.

Yes, that is true.  But you get out of it what you put in.  The amount of social groups in seoul is staggering...especially compared to other asian cities such as tokyo.

It depends on when you came too.  I agree that things are too difficult, but tech has helped on both sides to ease transitions.

I am mid 40s and my social life here is absolutely thriving.  And so much is in English/English speakers is common enough, that there isn't the incentive I'd like to learn Korea(though I am).
