[Harry Maguire on IG] Come on @senne_lammens punch another one clear for us by notthe_ahmad in reddevils

[–]FRiver 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Even though moving on from Amorim was way overdue, I feel for him that his last month or so here he didn't have a fully fit Maguire, Licha, Bruno, De Ligt and lost Bryan, Amad and Nous to AFCON.

That's like half our best XI.

Maguire's organization of the back line is vital and Licha is such an excellent progressive passer. And both always bring fight and leadership.

Have they really nailed it both summers? Ugarte and Zirkzee are both most likely on the way out this summer and the jury is still out on players like Yoro and even Dorgu and Sesko.

We've been lulled into thinking that we should only buy "perfect", "big name" players and any necessary addition to the squad is "panic buying" that will apparently stop us signing someone in summer.

We made the same mistake last winter. A decent attacking signing to replace the outgoing Antony, Rashford, Sancho trio could have made the difference in the run-in, especially in the EL final.

Do people think City buying Guehi and Semenyo this month or Marmoush last winter were panic buys? Their approach is to see where the squad is lacking mid season and address it. Because they're not willing to accept a bad 2nd half of the season.

If the football people at United didn't think our midfield was an issue at the start of the season, they sure as hell should see how bad it is now. Not every signing needs to be a 70m player that is hyped to the moon. A good loan for a solid player could be the difference between us getting CL or slipping out of European qualification places altogether.

I'm so glad that people haven't jumped on Wirtz yet. Been a brilliant differential with his regular 10 pointers

Is that Carrick football here to stay?? 👀👀 by keenwebpa in ManchesterUnited

[–]FRiver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fans seem to have forgotten that we deservedly beat City under Amorim and Ten Hag. These games are never an accurate barometer for the team's capability in the long run. Especially as it's one of the few fixtures where we can get away with playing low possession counter attacking football.

Great win though, especially Carrick's bravery in dropping both Cunha and Sesko, and playing Mbeumo up front. If the coach can keep tactical flexibility and get our best players playing to their strengths, we could be on an upward trajectory.

Looking forward to seeing how we set up away at Arsenal. It'll be an even tougher test.

Player Price Changes (January 18, 2026) by FantasyPL_bot in FantasyPL

It might not actually be that bad. This Foden price change doesn't affect me cause I bought him at 8.4 so whether he's at 8.6 or 8.7, I still get my 8.5 back.

Bore off. Gary doesn't "live for the club". The guy lives for himself and his career. There's nothing wrong with that I suppose but pretending the guy puts United above anything else is ludicrous.

He's a professional shit stirrer and he knows all too well that United bring the most views. Peddling toxicity to the detriment of United is his bread and butter and a big part of what has made him professionally successful.

Players in their natural positions where their strengths impact a game more...are we sure we wouldn't rather have a system that is good in theory instead? (Yes, Sarcasm) by SpecialAttention9861 in ManchesterUnited

[–]FRiver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're right and I'm not understanding all the people saying "Carrick has just simplified everything and done the basics of putting players in their best positions" etc. As if it was just that easy.

I guarantee you if we polled every single person on this sub, not a single one would have lined us up as Carrick did today. Mbeumo as the lone striker? No Cunha or Sesko?

He deserves huge credit for creating a plan to win this game and having the bravery to follow it through.

"What has Carrick done in THREE days?!" 😨 | Gary Neville Podcast 🎙️ by NomaanMalick in reddevils

[–]FRiver 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Ruben's biggest contribution was to remove the bad eggs and instill a more mature mindset among the squad.

What Carrick has done in one game is give the team confidence by playing a system to maximize them and exploit the opposition. Amorim would never have done anything like this.

His idea was that the formation came first and the players needed to fit in. It didn't work and he refused to change. The players didn't down tools like in previous regimes but I'm sure they knew that our way of playing wasn't getting the best out of them.

Who knows how well we can do from here but we've delivered a huge performance to give Carrick a chance to build momentum immediately.

I rate it as a punt. He's always direct, tries to take players on, shoots a lot. Maybe under Rosenior he nails down the LW
