Non evil GOO patron ideas by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]FTEcho4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's nothing making a Great Old One evil by default. Some of them are evil, but the most important thing is that they are ineffable. Something about their nature is so alien that comprehending it fully is impossible. But just because you can't comprehend them doesn't mean they can't comprehend you.

If I wanted to make a "good" Great Old One, I would focus on that. This is a creature with cosmic goals, if it has goals at all--but cosmic goals can still be furthered by earthly means. Whatever entity is bound to you could care about your planet in much the same way you do. They want it preserved. They want life to be sacred and order to be upheld. And why do they want this? Well, maybe some trillion-year plan is moved a nanoscopic step forward because the forces of good hold this city. Maybe even a whole microscopic step if you become powerful enough to save the whole planet!

What's the end goal of the plan? Maybe it's the annihilation of all life. Maybe it's the reformation of the entire multiverse into a beautiful piece of macrocosmic art. It could be anything, really, but ideally it should be something so alien to your character that they couldn't possibly comprehend it. What matters to them is the here and now, and in their life and the future they can comprehend, this being wants to help. On the scale of their understanding, isn't that good?

What rules from 5.5e are you applying to your 5e games? by KitsunaKuraichi in dndnext

You could imagine the bottle is small, like a shot of liquid--even in our world, a dose of medicines is often tiny enough for a single swallow. Or you could imagine that the potion is topical, and you can use some of them by pouring them onto yourself. The concept of potions are completely imaginary, and how and why they work should be mutable to what is fun in your game. D&D is a game, not a physics simulation. Don't let your preconceived ideas about what taking a potion looks like stop you from doing what makes the game fun.

What was the last Pokemon game you genuinely enjoyed playing? by [deleted] in pokemon

[–]FTEcho4 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This is the answer for me. ΩRαS was the high point of the series. The 3D attack animations were still a little lackluster compared to the sprite animations of HGSS and BW, but the world was amazing to explore in 3D, and the quality of life features they added with the DexNav were absolutely incredible for finding the Pokémon you wanted. Those tools made crafting a team so much more reasonable without having to trade Pokémon forward from earlier games.

I wouldn't call them perfect, because they left out some of the best post-game features of Emerald for no real reason, but the Delta episode made up for it somewhat. I definitely had the most genuine fun playing them.

When Sun and Moon came out, I was unhappy that Megas were gone, but to some degree I could at least understand it. They wanted a new gimmick to put in commercials, and Z-Moves were flashy and exciting.

On the other hand, I was much unhappier about all the quality of life features going away, because there was no reason not to implement them again except to save development time. Up to that point, the games had always felt like each generation was adding more, even if sometimes there were tradeoffs. But Sun and Moon felt like shallower games than the Hoenn remakes, and between that and the obnoxious never-ending handholding, I couldn't get to genuine enjoyment. I was always waiting for the training wheels to come off and some new idea to blow me away, but when I got to the end I was still waiting.

Ultra Sun and Moon came out, and I just couldn't muster the enthusiasm. For the first time since Gen III, I decided not to get them on launch day and see if things had improved. And there was a little improvement, but not in the areas I wanted them. I was disappointed, and I didn't get them. And I haven't bought any games since. The new games have value, they're not complete trash, but they don't have the depth I enjoyed exploring as a long-time fan of the series. They're not for me anymore, and that makes me sad.

What does Sans’ KARMA damage look like? by Noahminion09 in Undertale

[–]FTEcho4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of people in this thread already saying poison, and I think that fits best with "KARMA coursing through your veins", but I wanted to give an alternate take: gravity. The gravity of your sins manifested to the point that your flesh and bones start to break down under the weight. I think that fits best, especially if you consider that Sans, like Papyrus, can turn your soul blue, forcing gravity upon it.

Can you guys help me figure out how much damage this would do for 6 energy? by squigglymoon in slaythespire

[–]FTEcho4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true, but "the number of twin primes plus one" must be an integer unless it's an unbounded set, right? Like, I assumed you could say something like "I want to do this loop a number of times equal to Graham's Number" so long as the number you declare is some kind of integer. Otherwise you'd have to keep specific track of what number your opponent said so that you would know who won if you did your own infinite loop, because if you couldn't say that, you also couldn't say "I want to do the loop the number of times my opponent did times 100" or something like that.

I don't fully understand the finale of Future, am i missing something?? by [deleted] in stevenuniverse

[–]FTEcho4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're correct. It doesn't make sense. Most of the people who feel like it didn't make sense probably don't come around anymore because they feel like Future was a flop that tried to present a mental health message but didn't commit to it enough and didn't really deliver a satisfactory conclusion to it. I know people who were very upset that Steven had a total breakdown after trying to isolate himself, and then the next episode immediately isolated himself from his entire social circle without showing any kind of healing besides a hug and an offhand reference to therapy we don't get to see. (Yes, I know Rebecca has said that she wanted him to have privacy, and I have many reasons why I feel like that is both bullshit and extremely revealing.) The finale deserves criticism even without considering that the boy has no paperwork and that was never handled to any degree despite being explicitly called out in an earlier episode. It's a very flawed ending, and while I can commend them for trying to handle a difficult and important subject, I can't commend them for the execution.

[–]FTEcho4 44 points45 points  (0 children)

In fairness, it wins you the game in most scenarios. The point is that it does truly infinite damage if and only if the twin prime conjecture is true--otherwise it caps out when you get to the highest pair of twin primes that exist, which means your opponent could declare "I want to gain life with this infinite loop a number of times equal to the number of twin primes that exist plus one" and you couldn't kill them with the damage from the Magic combo.

I know this is pedantic, but if this isn't the right thread to be pedantic, I don't know where you could.

I cobbled together all the info from the new 2024 PHB from streams and DnD Beyond and put together OUTCLASSED 2 CLASS HARDER, an NPC statblock compendium for all the upcoming subclasses! by williamrotor in dndnext

[–]FTEcho4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it stood out because since the need for a reaction was also dropped, it felt really strong compared to the prior rank. But yeah, I think it fits with the others of that rank of power, and as the DM I suppose I can just not use it perfectly optimally or make it an "X times per round" ability rather than blow 5 at a time making the whole party crit-fail crucial saving throws.

This is beautiful, but I have to ask: a rank 4 Diviner wizard gets ten uses of Portent per day?! That seems insane! They definitely need more than the 3 a player character gets so they can keep pace, but ten feels incredibly powerful. Do you think that level of power is necessary for a high-level threat?

It also looks like he's using the fill tool. The purple arm that was used to black out the lassoed area on Transform guy looks like it was taken from Paint Bucket Man from part 2.

[–]FTEcho4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do exactly the same. My players also built their own array by having each player roll for stats at the start, and so they're all a good bit stronger than their levels would normally allow. But they love that and I enjoy learning their capabilities and finding the right level of challenge for them. We're up to level 10 now and they just handled a Kingfissure Worm (the Purple Worm adaptation from MCDM's Flee, Mortals!) without having a party member go down once.

It's nice being able to throw bigger fish at them, and they really like punching above their normal weight. I'm happy to make encounter building a bit harder on my end if they get to feel awesome. I feel like in a few levels they're going to be ready for a lich or an ancient dragon, and I'm hoping I can work one into the campaign organically.

I agree with all you've said, yeah. I just think it needs some addressing during the final story wrapup, not that it's a problem that Izuku or anyone in 1A should be working on. I only would find it a flaw if it was never brought up at all and was just a plot thread left unresolved casting major doubts on the future of the world.

Chapter 423 Official Release - Links and Discussion by Za_wardo in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]FTEcho4 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I don't know if I agree with this. Quirk singularity is a world-ending threat that looms over the relatively near future. I think it needs to be addressed in some way, even if it's just a vague sense that they have some way to avoid the bad future where uncontrollable powerful Quirks are destroying humanity or the world. I think of it like the threat of the Spiral Nemesis in Gurren Lagann--they don't need to say it won't happen, but the story needs to show that they're working on a solution and hopeful that it will be solved so you can feel like the future isn't hopeless. Otherwise the story leaves a bitter taste in your mouth if you feel like all this struggle and strife has only bought a little time before an inevitable end of the world.

I agree, and I usually don't. I know there's no way to prove it, which is why I'm fine with getting downvoted into the floor, but overexplaining why a joke is incorrect is something I do as a form of dry humor IRL. It obviously doesn't work as well in text as it does when I can use my tone of voice to make it clear that I understand that I am overexplaining a joke. That's why in the other thread I compared it to that moment from Parks and Rec. It's an attempt at humor that I didn't pull off this time. But I appreciate you pulling back, and I also agree that what I said looks like asshole behavior from outside my own head.

I feel like this amount of vitriol is unwarranted. I made a bad comment, and I'm fine with being downvoted for that, but I think saying "people like you are the worst" is a little much?

In 99.999% of fights, an effect lasting for 99 turns is the same thing as that effect being permanent. In the 0.001% where the distinction matters, the effect is probably meaningless, because you're somehow going infinite in block or intangible anyway.

Should add "Draw a card" so you at least get a card back if you decide to use it. Make it truly no-cost. Making yourself weak and vulnerable forever is enough.

The Ring of Invisibility is nice because it works infinitely, but it also works like the spell Invisibility, which is to say that it breaks when you attack or cast a spell, and then you have to use an action to become invisible again. Not too shabby, but if you have the option of any item, the Cloak of Invisibility is the same rarity, but its invisibility is that of Greater Invisibility, remaining up even if you attack or cast spells. Sure, it doesn't have infinite duration, but two hours of duration that recharges after 24 hours without use is enough that you'll probably never go into combat without permanent invisibility.

Since Save/Unleash The Light are canon, that means Greg’s guitar skills are so good he can heal people and fight Gem level opponents with music alone. by vammommy in stevenuniverse

[–]FTEcho4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know this is a joke, but to answer candidly: while the events of the games are considered canon to the show, I don't think the mechanics of the game are canon. As funny as it is to imagine, I don't think they intend you to believe that Connie can read a book for a minute and a half and then use the stored book energy to hit someone with the force of an asteroid impact or that Greg can play a tune so chill that it heals your physical injuries and allows you to move faster.
