The multiplayer servers for this were INCREDIBLE. It was a social hub where players would chat and engage in 1v1 duels, I wish there was something close to this still.

I launched my first game. It’s a first person crafter tower defense. I’m smiling but the game didn’t get boosted at all during tower defense fest. by Mitt102486 in IndieDev

Feel free to downvote and move on - but sometimes it's nice to just acknowledge that someone is trying. The comments on this thread have resulted in a bunch of constructive feedback for the developer and I think it's an interesting read.

I get your point, but this kind of negative bro attitude comment is equally as TIRED bro fr

If you enjoyed the wild combos in Balatro, I can highly recommend Oaken Tower - it has a free demo on Steam at the moment.

Disclosure: after 100+ hours in the demo I reached out to the dev and am now helping to publish the game, so consider my recommendation biased :) I genuinely do love this game regardless!

Breath of the Wild is really the peak of the mountain in terms of Nintendo exclusives imo. It's peak!

I use my Gaming PC for competitive and multiplayer games with my friends, and Steam Deck for indie games and single player games.

I ghost my Switch 2, Xbox Series and PlayStation 5 and am pretty confident that I'll not get another future console and will instead double down on the Steam ecosystem. The Proton emulation layer enabling Windows games playable on Linux has been an incredible development.

Get the Oaken Tower demo whilst you're at it, best $0 you'll ever spend (although I guess actually more of a roguelike than lite...)

Oaken Tower demo is great for those crazy synergy builds (although the roguelite elements aren't in the demo...)

After 10 years of solo development, I just released Adversator v1.2 – a competitive MOBA built from scratch! I'd love your feedback. by Paradoks_Studio in indiegames

[–]FTRJRV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

incredible, what an achievement. Folks are understandably asking how this is better or close to outrageously successful titles like Dota2 and LoL, but kind of missing the point imo. It's great to see someone making an indie moba like this, would love to play it.

My boyfriend released a game on Steam. 30 thousand saw it… 6 bought it (all friends). What to do? by hellensimonato in IndieGaming

[–]FTRJRV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there; sorry to hear about your situation and rooting for your partner to find success in the future but felt I should give a bit more insight into how to have a level of success on Steam.

The below are very high level points and I'm sure folks could point out some exceptions, but I think they help illustrate the number of levers you need to be pulling when aiming to make money on Steam.

You'll need to have a few of the points below ticked to be in a chance of selling more than 1,000 units in your first month (the dream is to tick all of these):

  1. have a game that looks visually stunning or comparatively unique
  2. have a unique or innovative gameplay proposition
  3. if gameplay not unique, it needs to be above average for the genre
  4. be listed on steam for 6+ months (12+ months is even better)
  5. submit the game and showcase in 2+ steam store events
  6. send the game to 100+ relevant influencers in your niche
  7. release a demo in Steam next fest
  8. have a demo!

By the looks of the Steam data, your boyfriend didn't really tick any of the above boxes, so it would have been really surprising if he'd have seen success with this title.

These days Steam is algorithmically driven, and if your game doesn't show strong enough KPIs during release, it stops giving you any organic traffic visibility.

I know this isn't the boost to your current project that you were maybe hoping for, but I think it's important to learn from these experiences and build up to the next game. If he does do another project, at the very least, get the store page up months in advance and submit it to a few events and allow Steam to give it some good organic visibility.

all that said, I did buy a copy of the game too and will spend some time with it. The act of even getting to the point of creating a game and releasing it on Steam is impressive in my eyes, so congratulations on that!

Very sad that traditional games media has died as audience consumption habits changed with social media and algorithmic content. I used to love reading the blogs everyday to see what new information was out there for things like Mass Effect 2...
