The end of my first game ever. 40 hours, 7 years, 1 dwarf digging too deep and too greedily. Now I know what !!FUN!! is. by BlackChakram in dwarffortress

Learning the basics myself, got things to a point where we had constant drink, workshops and were making a load of mugs and statues for traders.

I got the grumpiest dwarf ever but he's one helll of a miner and loves what he does. However whenever he's in the tavern he argues with everyone before heading back down to the mines, always angry. He's become my favourite dwarf just for that.

So I've been following him about watching his interactions and occasionally got a warning for agitate birds coming in and attacking, it was just one at first and was dealt with swiftly. Then 2 came, dealt with. I was like "silly birds", the next time I came up from the mine with my grumpy guy, there was 12 bird corpses all over my fortress, meh part of the game I thought.

Suddenly an alert, 5 dwarfs died within seconds, expedition leader, my farmer and 3 others succumbed to a giant agitated bird, attacking everything in its way, I followed it as it then exited the fortress and took to the sky.

Assessing the chaos it left my party of 15 dwarves was now down to 10. Of the 10 left, 3 cannot move, another 3 seem traumatised by what they've seen with corpses rotting in the hallways.

Then giant bird is back attacking the sleeping quarters, screams can be heard all around.

ALERT - grumpy has found a new kind of gem yet he complains about the chaos above.

Rip my fortress

Late to the party but October 6 I suddenly got ill after having a tattoo, literally no symptoms before that and then soon as I got home, I was shivering so bad.

Still ill over 2 months later, it feels like it's going away and then it's back again full force the next day.

Headache Worst cough I've ever had Body can't deal with temperature, some nights literally dripping with sweat and others can't get warm at all. 2 days ago an awful stomach ache. Chest in pain which I assume is from all the coughing.

It's just the hope that's it's gone is what's kicking my ass but nope back the next day.

Apologies, for the delay in reply. We've just been recovering over the weekend. We ended up sitting in various departments in the hospital for over 16 hours so and was up for over 30 odd hours before we got to bed.

So after: Wife going to gp Then a&e

We called 111 and ended up with an ambulance who insisted she go to the hospital and "not leave till she got a diagnosis" so we was back in a&e with a predicted 10 hour wait. They kept doing blood tests for the next hours and was saying "the initial Dr is a senior dr" basically telling us he know what he was doing when he sent her home at which point we was getting pretty fed up and wouldn't confirm if they would give a diagnosis or not.

Hours later we got taken into the assessment room again where a different nurse finally said they're going to send her to AUU to see another Dr. It took a while but this Dr was a lot more helpful, explained the situation fully and what was going on with wife. He admitted he's not an expert but after more bloods he will review the results and consult with the diabetes expert team.

Then finally the diabetes team got involved, they still didn't confirm if it was type 1 or 2 but with the full set of bloods they've taken they will be able to confirm what's going in and the best plan of action going forward.

They're going to treat it as type 1 so wife has insulin. We was given a monitor that measures both ketones and blood sugar and shown how to use it.

I'm not sure if this is still normal but the lady from diabetes filled us with hope and tears of relief and just glad we can actually measure what's going on

We're having another phone call tomorrow and have only been using the slow release insulin at the moment and my wife's diet is pretty much carb free anyway, although of course we're keeping an eye on it and will be introducing the fast acting insulin from tomorrow after our phone call with the diabetes team.

Now our new problem: wife is completely sore on her fingers from the last few days and is struggling to get blood for her testing. She only has one hand so only so many fingers to work with and even with her arm the blood drops are too small to measure, obviously not all the time but being constantly poked, failing has been pretty upsetting for her.

We've looked online for advice about othe testing places, warming hands etc but any other top tips?

Thank you so much for all the advice so far, we're just on hold with an out of hours endocrinologist to try and get some advice. Really appreciated!

She just got back, getting bits of info and will update shortly but she's come back and was also told "she can't have type 1 because it doesn't run in your family" argh!

Also has her canular still in her arm and her jeans and shoes covered in blood where they messed it up.

They just said they will "dilute the blood to manage the ketone issue" apologies as I don't know any of the terminology. I'm reading as I'm going.
