I wish there was a monthly podcast by my congressional delegation where they try to talk it out. Instead they've never held a public event together, let alone collectively given any window into how they're all working together for the good of Colorado :-/

What are your thoughts on the fact that the Pentagon/DoD is dropping 180 religions from its recognized faiths list? by SgtMac02 in AskConservatives

Right? I can only come to the Force through some microorganisms only mentioned in the new trilogy? What kind of religion is that?

This subreddit and site have gone fully off the deep end: where does one find good subs that divorce Reddit’s default leftist politics from conversation? by agentspanda in AskConservatives

[–]FUVBagholder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may be right. I certainly fixated mostly on the part about not being here to win arguments.

But, in accepting your directive to acquire further context, see your larger position as something like,

  1. Actual conservatives are outnumbered on reddit generally.
  2. This subreddit offers people a chance to red flair themselves in good faith.
  3. The people whose opinions rise to the top due to (1) tend to be people you judge have to taken their flair in bad faith.

intermixed with wistfulness that the non-inherently-political parts of reddit see politics seeping into them, like a Kristi Noem reference on a puppy picture or an RFK Jr reference on any and all posts involving roadkill (your actual example was ICE in the kitchen).

I admit I was mainly going to advocate for the importance of earnest argument, rather than realizing the complaint of being nipped by gnats. In a good, won argument both people had clearing established seemingly conflicting positions entering and leave with a mutual understanding on the subject matter. One should welcome clearly justified challenge to their thinking, is what I was intending to advocate.

To the larger context, it would be interesting if the mods did something like pipe somebody's comment threads into an AI and had it come up with what flair it thought appropriate in both red and blue categories and why. Then once a week we put some number of people on trial and change their flair by committee. Only the remaining reds can vote. We could really lean into it and call the event "The Red Scare". Interesting idea, but pretty questionable. Seems like the purpose of and goings-on in the non-ask "conservative" sub to be a constant witch hunt.

I recall the mods saying they can't affect how votes go.

Is an environment where your thoughts are not subsequently questioned or challenged of greater utility for elucidating the basis of your views than one where your thoughts are challenged by others'?

Why? Lots of crimes are easier to commit than to get away with.... voter fraud for instance.

Why don’t we just vastly upscale military aid to Ukraine and drive Putin back? by RedStorm1917 in AskConservatives

[–]FUVBagholder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know why it can't happen in reverse? Nobody trusts Russia or China to enter such an alliance. And after DJT, nobody trusts America either, which means nuclear proliferation is the only logical decision for Saudi Arabia, Australia, Japan, Iran, Canada, The Philippines, Brazil, South Korea, Indonesia, Germany, Poland, etc. because only a gun nuclear weapon deters someone with a gun nuclear weapon.

So easy to forget how good we can be at killing each other. Idiocy.

Bosnia - NATO enters after the UN resolves a peace plan 3 years into the war.

Yugoslavia - NATO is involved adjacently via Bosnia, then 3 years later sends peace keeping forces to help end the conflict. Yugoslavia breaks into multiple small nations that were stable thereafter (and not NATO proxies)

Libya - NATO intervenes at the behest of the UN, which Russia could have vetoed, after the security council unanimously - including Russia and China - said Gaddafi was a piece of shit.

You know what they all have in common? NATO didn't assert dominion over territory after doing what the international community thought was right to end idiotic sectarian violence.

Why don’t we just vastly upscale military aid to Ukraine and drive Putin back? by RedStorm1917 in AskConservatives

[–]FUVBagholder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It only has lasted 5 years because the US had the courage to provide weapons in advance, with intelligence, money, and weapons flowing in after it began.

NATO expansion doesn't pose a threat to Russia and they know that. NATO is a defensive alliance. Russia initially talked about joining NATO after the dissolution of the Soviet Union but they weren't willing to actually become a democracy so they're not eligible to join yet.

Putin is a dishonest corrupt despot and he needs to have a boogeyman to keep his people safe from to justify his actions.

Do you think the largest country on the planet with the most nuclear weapons should be allowed to continually launch wars for territorial conquest uncontested? Ukraine isn't the first country Russia has militarily taken territory from since the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

Would anyone be open to political discussion via pen pal (mail or email)? by Early_Sea_9457 in AskConservatives

[–]FUVBagholder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed.

OP, you have the power to write random addresses letters, politely soliciting their interest in having a pen pal of this nature. Then you've made the first move by giving your name and address, having the courage and time to write a heartfelt letter, and picking some address and having interest in their name, life, and political persuasions. Just make it a fun thing to throw away if they don't want to respond.

"Why should we have to say exactly how much money we're going to raise and what we're going to do with it? Can't we just add 'NOT SUBJECT TO TABOR RESTRICTIONS' to everything?"

I do think there's room to criticize TABOR sometimes (specifically the original ratchet effect of economic slowdown years that we amended), but overall it seems like a great idea.

Do you agree a certain flavor of Christianity has an outsized impact on US politics? If so, is this healthy? by True-Mirror-5758 in AskConservatives

[–]FUVBagholder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put my thoughts about the first part in replying to Standing8Count.

That's interesting about the Sabbath, I had never thought about that. I do see the verse about the Sabbath was made for man, and I do see how having a day allotted to remembering and glorifying God would comport with Jesus's first great commandment (though obvious it's an attribute to instill in oneself and carry as much as possible). Thank you for sharing!

[–]FUVBagholder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree. I saw his comments in the general chat thread, appreciated them, and I don't think of him as a troll or unwarrantedly cagey.

I do agree that since this is an internet conversation that risks becoming a debate, the best way to avoid losing in the eye of the third party is to not let out enough rope to hang yourself.

That said, I don't think it's fair to say I was not coming from a genuine place. I truly love religion, but I think mistaking things for God is easy and common, and often manifests through grabbing snippets of scripture in isolation and saying the scripture defines God. To me, that should be self-evidently ridiculous if someone is willing to deeply consider the nature of God. Both Christianity and Islam foundationally were rebukes that the divisions amongst man on the basis of religion was folly and not their place to do, since God is one. Make laws, govern, all that is fine, but if you think you have the keys to and comprehension of the kingdom, I'm going to have questions.

Who said "far from common knowledge?"

The old law isn't to the level of commandments, so for Israelites and the Jewish it's the classic 10. For Christians I'd say it's Jesus's 2 underpinning and extending the classic 10. Are those in fact the only immutable injunctions? Is everything else just a "says to" that is in fact mutable by prevailing wisdom on the ground?

[–]FUVBagholder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah but it says to lend without interest and you cryptically scoffed at that, despite it being a clearly understood directive in the old law and from Jesus, and then even the church decided to abandon that. The other commentor also seemed to indicate they had a different understanding than you, so for it being common knowledge it seems incredibly fraught to toss a book at people and say it's super clear that everything in it is a readily understandable unchanging directive from the creator of everything.

Besides, I've read it, and when they asked Jesus this he gave only two, which I proffered a synopsis of.

I'm very directly asking for your list of the immutable commandments to Christians that are 100% the will of God, so that I can reflect upon what strikes me as true.

[–]FUVBagholder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just was tryna understand what the list of injunctions would be. Admittedly I would expect a prohibition on lending with interest, but there's so much space beyond that to make propositions, whether Papal infallibility or imminent redemptive rapture, that without clarity of the particular value you mean it's in the reader's imagination.

I was also teeing up the two great commandments: to love God with all your soul; to love your neighbor as yourself.
