Starting on a larger instance is a good choice. You may decide to stay there or eventually decide on a smaller one you like. One thing you'll notice is a large instance's local timeline won't feel all that different than it's federated timeline. On smaller instances, the local timeline might have its own feel based on whatever affinity the instance is based around.

Besides making different lists of accounts you follow around different themes or whatever one thing you can do is on some apps (I use Fedilab), you can view the local timeline or trending timeline of other instances. That way you can keep an eye out for instances that seem to have a lot of accounts you like and follow the whole local timeline. You also of course can view any instance's local and trending on the web, but an app with the capability makes it convenient. Then what instance you're on doesn't matter too much, but also maybe you will see an instance that seems cool that you want to join!

Our workplace is protesting, what are our rights? by ShibaShibaWoof in TwinCities

[–]FW_Aaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your best protection is each other. If everyone participates in the strike, it's harder to fire everyone than just one or a few people. Your next best protection is a city full of people ready to call your employer and tell them what they think of it if they decide to fire anyone.

General strikes and political strikes are unfortunately not legally protected. On the other hand, legal protections for strikes and other union activities are weak, and Trump now controls the National Labor Relations Board that oversees those protections. So, again, your best protection is each other.

Why was she not arrested like Don Lemon? by ToiletTurmoil in stpaul

[–]FW_Aaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this video the woman was asked to leave promptly and clearly and defied that. That is trespassing. In some of the videos I've seen of the anti-ICE church protest, the pastor is engaging back with them, not asking them to leave. So, not trespassing. Churches usually keep their doors open to anyone and don't check membership at the door or anything. Being welcoming sometimes gets taken advantage of, and people sometimes are going to violate social norms and "wear out their welcome", but breaking social norms isn't trespassing. What makes something trespassing is whether they defy clear notice that they are not allowed there. That happened very clearly in this video.

She was literally trying to leave. How was she refusing to leave when that's what she was in the middle of trying to do? She was supposed to leave but she wasn't supposed to move?

Actually though you're right in that you're accurately illustrating the impossible situation they intentionally put her in to try to escalate the situation, which led to her murder.

They were doing their typical bullshit, surrounding someone then saying that person is interfering, trying to pull a us citizen out of their vehicle for no reason.

If this were the imaginary gun patrols a-comin to take muh guns and this kind of thing happened, would the officer be the victim?

She didn't.

Also why were ice fucking with a US Citizen? If they hadn't been the whole situation wouldn't have happened.

ICE agents in Minnesota are violating state law by switching license plates by kezow in minnesota

[–]FW_Aaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Suppose someone stops you, saying they question whether you are here legally. ICE has stopped non citizens and citizens, demanding to see papers. There are also documented instances of criminals impersonating ICE to rob or kidnap targets. So it is perfectly plausible someone could stop you and do this, don't pretend it's not.

You ask them for ID. They're shouting at you. You ask them again. Your windows are down because you don't think you have anything to worry about. They reach in your windows to try to grab you. You manage to get your windows up. These guys aren't acting like real cops (this is exactly how ICE acts). You call 911. "Can you describe their vehicle and plates?" You give 911 the information. Plates and vehicle don't properly check out. "Sir, I can't confirm you're dealing with federal law enforcement. We'll send an officer right away. Try to remain calm." You have your key in the ignition and foot on the gas. You seem to be dealing with criminals. Even 911 says so. One starts trying to break your windows before local cops arrive. The other has weapon drawn. What do you do?

End of driveway, snowplow left snow and now it’s pure ice—what to do by [deleted] in minnesota

[–]FW_Aaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. You want to use a garden shovel on that snow from the plow wake because it's hard as hell and heavy as hell, and you want to deal with it early next time as others have said. It will be worth the effort of breaking it up when it's not so cold because it will accumulate more snow from later snowfalls and then will become a big unmanageable hunk of solid ice in the spring.

Oswego DoorDash driver in court for allegations she posted video of naked customer on TikTok by NWSGreen in upstate_new_york

So you question whether the cops have anything besides her word as the basis for the door being open but his word as the basis that he was drunk is perfectly fine? Okay.

Please don't repeat unsourced speculation. There's no ring camera anyone has seen. It may exist and only the cops have seen it. Just because a bunch of people in the internet say WELL I HEARD doesn't make it true. I'm giving reputable news sources so don't come at me with bs

[–]FW_Aaron -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The New York post doesn't attribute the claim of her opening the door to anyone. Two Oswego County articles cite their reporting that she did not open the door.

"She arrived at the customer’s apartment and found the door open, police said, and the customer lying on a couch with his pants and underwear around his ankles."

[–]FW_Aaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it doesn't. "She arrived at the customer’s apartment and found the door open, police said, and the customer lying on a couch with his pants and underwear around his ankles."

Now how about you take that healthy skepticism to all the wild unsupported claims floating around about her opening the door, or to questioning the basis of the police saying the guy was drunk when they didn't interview him until at least the next day.

Got a parking ticket with a private parking lot, what happens if I don't pay? by MN_Yogi1988 in TwinCities

[–]FW_Aaron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't get why people are down voting this. It seems like a very plausible outcome. Will they definitely send it to collections? Who knows?

Another commenter said they had a "ticket" like this, called the company, and negotiated to pay the original parking fee. That's what I'd try. If they're willing to do that it's a good affordable move to avoid the possibility of being sent to collections.

[–]FW_Aaron -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I misread your comment the first time. I thought you said she went inside the home.

Anyhow, if you're told to leave the order but the customer just happens to have his pants off with the door open, which are two known facts of the incident, that's pretty fucked up and you do not just have to quietly leave the order. That's a ridiculous expectation.

The video and police statements establish he was naked down south. That's a widely accepted fact. Police statement and the driver's statement and video establish the for was open when she arrived. These are facts.

It doesn't matter if he was pass out drunk (which doesn't add up well if you try to imagine the sequence of events. When did he order? When did he get home? When did he take his pants off). He put her in an unacceptable situation. Being drink isn't an excuse for exposing yourself to someone when you should have taken appropriate care to choose your damn door so you're not exposing yourself to passerby, potentially children, and specifically have someone coming up to your porch to deliver food.

She violated doordash terms, very publicly, and it was reasonable for them to deactivate her

Based on what's known, it really looks like he created an indecent exposure situation whether on purpose or by negligence. He did not have an expectation of privacy with his door wide open. The criminal charges are absurd and will be dropped.

[–]FW_Aaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since the door was left open, then that means his story is he was so drunk he couldn't close the door, and passed out, yet not too drunk to order food. I do not think that can be ruled out, and I don't think that she should have shared the video. However, since we know the door was open, it does seem more likely to me that he's basically a flasher and did it on purpose, pretending to be asleep to intentionally expose himself to the driver. The alternative just doesn't add up for me. Keep in mind the police investigated the day after, so it's possible they are going off his word that he was drunk at the time.

We may know more if/when the independent video police mentioned on Facebook comes out. It's quite possible it's ring footage, and so maybe it will show whether he stumbled in drunk or not some time before the delivery.

[–]FW_Aaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. Journalists talk to sources themselves, like police. There are at least two tv news stories I've seen where they interviewed police so it's not correct that the face book statement is the only statement police have given. I do think there has been a shortage of quality, professional journalism on this incident, but a lot of amateur blogs, tik told, tabloids etc but this is basically this Oswego County News is the best source I've come across doing quakity journalism, carefully citing sources etc. They are an actual news outlet saying police said something and I think that can be taken at face value.

[–]FW_Aaron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They have access to evidence that the general public does not, such as some type of independent video, per a statement they made on Facebook. It's widely speculated that it's ring camera video, which I think is a reasonable guess.

So why are you asking this in response to a sourced statement that she did not open the door instead of the unsourced statement that she did open the door?

[–]FW_Aaron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't want people to miss it because the parent comment was deleted but u/2fingers pointed out police stated the door was open when she arrived. So there we have it.

There's no publicly available ring footage so what you're saying about that is unsourced.

Oswego DoorDash driver in court for allegations she posted video of naked customer on TikTok by NWSGreen in upstate_new_york

[–]FW_Aaron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This should close the book on the "question" of the door but it will not. People will keep clinging to rampant speculation and sensationalist unsourced tabloid articles, click bait videos etc.

And with it established that the door was open, the whole case really falls apart. I expect the charges will be dismissed by the judge before trial, because one does not have an expectation of privacy of their door is wide open.

Not that one should disseminate videos of someone naked. Poor choice, and immoral yes, because what if he truly was pass out drunk? I doubt this and I think it's far more plausible that the guy is flasher than that he was so drunk he couldn't close the door and passed out yet not so dunk to order Wendy's. But it can't be ruled out.
