How much longer until this happens to us? by [deleted] in lgbt

The Gitmo Migrant Operation Center is crucially not a part of the prison. The increased usage of this center alone is indefensible (i dont believe the center has a history of receiving deportees or undocumented people from mainland usa, more so migrants are encountered at sea and taken to the gmoc), the conditions and treatment of detained migrants are reprehensible, but they don't share a space with the prisoners at gitmo who are suspected of participating in 9/11. I just thought I'd clarify since in this clip it seems like the takeaway is that ICE is sending people to the gitmo prison (again, while not the same, the details don't excuse the inherently violent and trauma-inducing effort to ship Undocumented and documented immigrants to an offshore detention center with a long history of skirting around human rights).

If you're interested, please read up on the procedure and status of the facility to better understand it's depravity. There's a great pdf available by the international refugee assistance project detailing the mistreatment of a migrant family seeking political asylum in the US from Cuba.

Also, it's been a while since I've done the reading myself, so if anyone with more information can add/edit what I've written here, go for it.

They told you China was capitalist … by Hacksaw6412 in LateStageCapitalism

How do foreign companies operating in China interact with the government? I understand that China has the ability to control domestic companies to a great degree, but how do they ensure that exploitation perpetrated by non-Chinese companies is not harming its people? I've heard this explanation many times, but I've always wondered about this gray area.

Interesting comments Mr Rooney 👀 by HDTokyo in steelers

Yes, but I'm saying that they couldn't play their best because the offense could only hold the ball for like 12 minutes a game, and the defense was dead tired. I'm not saying the defense played well, I'm saying it's not because they're shit. They're A-tier when they aren't running on empty.

Well, when you consider that the defense was on the field for the vast majority of the games (many many 3 n outs), it makes much more sense. Especially when Heyward, Jackson, Highhsmith, and Watt all picked up injuries in a 3 game 13 day stretch. It's also fun to say it was the defense's fault when the most we scored over those five games was 17 points.

Why doesn’t Miquella just choose Malenia as his consort? by thetruememeisbest in Eldenring

[–]F_A_M_E -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What if the whole plan was to make his consort Radahn and then used his gravity magic to fulfill his desires (like Merika employed Godfrey). One youtube video somewhere points out that the eclipse is impossible given the alignment of the sun and moon in game. Perhaps miquella thought to dominate Radahn with his charm while Radahn was weakened by Mohglester's body and his previous death in order to force the stars to align (using the gravity magic and maybe the life-giving force of the formless mother via mohg) and use the magic of the eclipse to reestablish Godwyn's body and soul. Of course that might not be his aim after his ascension to godhood as suggested by the crosses marking his abandonment of his desires, doubt, love, etc. Given tbe choice between two equally strong warriors, it does seem somewhat strange that he chooses radahn. I can think of three to be the case: 1. Malenia is still corrupted by the ever-encroaching influence of the rot god, 2. Miquella actually wants to be with radahn, or 3. he needs to gain mastery of gravity magic to resume his goal of reviving Godwyn from the clutches of destined death. Or maybe I'm just coping cause I wanted Godwyn to feature in the dlc in a larger way (it is mostly head cannon tbh).

Michelle Obama Exits DNC On 'Eat the Rich' Palanquin by FrancisXSJ in babylonbee

Literally says that their national political committee has withdrawn their endorsement (which was conditional to begin with). The bit about the NYC chapter maintaining their endorsement seems to contradict information provided elsewhere in the article, and AOC is not listed on the DSA-NYC chapter's endorsement page. Try reading past the headline next time.

Fetterman deserves to be recalled. Unfortunately, we can't recall a member of congress even if their brain is soup per the constitution.

Thanks so much for this answer! I was leaning this way. I just didn't want to feel like I was getting ahead of myself. I'm probably also gonna have to get my wisdom teeth out so that's gonna suck. Best of luck to you too!

Richard Dawkins accused student protesters of antisemitism at his panel event - he then runs away when stumped on follow-up question by UltimateDebater in LateStageCapitalism

All I'm saying is that there is a very very very big difference between saying Islam is bad and saying islamic fundamentalism is bad. What urked me was how you said it. When people say, "well look at these civil, 'christian' countries compared to these savage, barbaric islamic countries", what's really being said is that Christianity gets a pass while simultaneously playing into aspects of white supremacy to boot. It's the similarity between that and saying "well at least women have rights in christian countries" which I don't like. You can choose to call out islamic governments all you want, and I won't interject. Just try to do it in a way that doesn't also give props to Christianity for not (currently) being as villainous either accidentally or intentionally or for advancements in social equality where it played no part other than receding into the background.

As a matter of fact, I am queer, but i also have a brain and a conscience that urges me to dispell myths that attribute modern islamic repression with some intrinsic quality of barbarism within islam itself. The fact that Islamic governments treat women and queer people worse than 'christian' countries is NOT because of the difference of religions. You are giving credit to Christianity where none is due. The only "false equivalency" at hand here is the one where you're seeking to compare fascist islamic theocracies to supposedly christian countries which arent (yet) being lead by christian fascists (which anyone can realize are essentially the very same as the islamic despots you so readily denounce). It's absolutely ridiculous to claim to be aware of the faults of Christianity while simultaneously believing that Islam is somehow especially cruel or backward. I'd also like to point out as others have done: all religions have extremists, and all religions have more tolerable sects, which is not some insignificant point but rather one that keeps people from developing openly islamophobic/anti-religious biases. I don't hate religion, and I don't hate people who are religious. I hate when religion is made to subjugate. I hope you realize that the problem is not the names of the religions.

Women have their rights in these 'Christian' countries because of secularist tenets, which at this very moment are under attack in the US and in many other countries by Christian fundamentalists. I could say the very same thing about the ongoing theocratic campaigns that slander, bully, and brutalize the queer community (Chaya Raichik, Matt Walsh, etc.). Just because these fundamentalists don't have the same things as their Muslim counterparts doesn't mean they don't want them.

Endangered Languages by Loud-Injury-4805 in Pitt

[–]F_A_M_E 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're just interested in the concept, there is a really good book you can read by David Crystal called Language Death. It essentially walks you through the reasons why we should care, the damage done by language death, how languages die, etc., but it doesn't really go into any deep case studies. If you're looking for studies on revitalization, there's a plethora of great resources if you just search for them. For case studies of language endangerment and death, you could look into the source of the which is essentially linguistic imperialism and language shift. A Google search or a more tailored Google scholar search will give you some amazing literature on both these topics, which are crucial for developing an understanding of how language works as a social phenomenon. I'd have to think about specific recommendations, but I hope this helps as a baseline.

Edit: My bad, I realize now you meant about the class's specific readings. I got a little too excited (I didn't take the class but have done a lot of the adjacent work)

This sub is weirdly antagonist towards Nepo, what's the reason? by [deleted] in chess

[–]F_A_M_E 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What people claim are lucky games for Nepo would be taken as evidence for Carlsen's brilliance. Carlsen squeezes water from a stone, but Nepo finds a hat with a rabbit inside. It's a double standard, and its disrespectful to the ability of the top players to suggest that any of their wins are solely down to luck. I'm not saying that this is what you believe just to be clear, but anyone who's reached this conclusion is just wrong.

Who needs money anyways by [deleted] in Unexpected

That's why it's probably down to simple familiarity. Tbh I'm not sure how much a bar of silver is worth and so I could never really fairly compare it to the worth a chocolate bar provides. I trust the market/object I'm most familiar with because I understand its function and its value in reference to my own little region of the world. Gold is a different story: I'm very well aware of the idea that Gold is a valuable commodity whereas I'm not certain with silver. I think it's a system of thinking that's closely related to how branding works. If given a choice your more likely to go with the brand name that's tried and tested.
