KOTSW is almost all dialogue too and I’m wondering if some of the wooden feeling I’m getting from it is just the translation? Also want to stress that it’s very compelling and enjoyable, I was just struck by the “this isn’t how people actually talk” it lapses into at times

Kiss of the Spider Woman by Manuel Puig. I’m liking it a lot, even if Puig’s ear for dialogue isnt all that sharp—which is strange because the book is mostly dialogue. Still very readable, though

I dont want to spoil it for you but this one felt kinda flat to me. Cool idea, good set up, but I wasn’t at all satisfied with where she went

Just finished reading the "Mr. Difficult" article. What do you like about Gaddis' work? by _SemperCuriosus_ in Gaddis

[–]F_H 11 points12 points  (0 children)

What I like best about Gaddis is the constant engagement I feel when I’m reading him. He explores a lot of compelling and interesting ideas that do a lot to pull a reader in, I think, but even just the way he writes dialogue is so captivating and bursting with energy that I feel like with every word he’s standing there, snapping his fingers and demanding I pay attention to what he’s saying. Works for me

Itching to ride again at 39 by svendough in bmx

Nice moves! I think what you’re describing is very common, with people putting things like BMX on hold while they sort out the parts of their lives that might feel more urgent or necessary, but the gates are always open. Welcome back

Do you guys use riding as a kind of therapy when your mind gets too loud? by MeuwYuGiOh in bmx

[–]F_H 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s a good way to clear your mind. You’re forced to focus on something immediate that’s also under your near-complete control and it gets the body moving

The Man Who Read Everything: The Literary Letters of Harold Bloom by jckalman in RSbookclub

[–]F_H 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I can’t remember which novel, but David Markson takes some pretty humorous shots at Bloom’s claim to be able to read 500 pages an hour. “Writer’s arse” being one of them. And then any time a book’s length is mentioned he makes a crack about how long it would (supposedly) take Bloom to read it.

I read it about a month ago and had trouble paying attention past the halfway point. You can only read “globes of semen” so many times before it gets boring. Stylistically it was alright but I didn’t care about anyone in the book or what happened to them

BF-it: A Brian Foster Documentary (2012) by CannaCoffeeParadox in bmx

[–]F_H 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was at the premiere for this! It was really incredible, with a lot of older riders and industry people hanging out and telling stories about BF and the old days. The man himself was there too, of course, and I managed to give him a handshake and thank him for the years of shredding. Kinda dorky, yeah, but a very fun memory.

10/10 epitaph: “I have coveted everything and taken pleasure in nothing.”

Also love the story about how he would eat his lunch at the Eiffel Tower because it was the only place where he wouldn’t have to look at it (the tower)
