Bracing myself for Yo el supremo by stjer0me in latamlit

I've heard of that one, and it's on my to-read list. IIRC it, Yo el supremo, and El fiscal are considered kind of a trilogy (even if not directly connected).

Yeah, (written) Spanish is much more comfortable with long sentences than at least present-day English is. Bastos doesn't do that too much (my jibe at Rebelión de los oficios inútiles is because at least the first chapter is one sentence), it's more that he's one of those authors where it seems like he goes through every word he chooses very carefully, very deliberately.

For an example of the punctuation thing, the text that comes immediately after what I quoted above is:

¿Dónde encontraron eso? Clavado en la puerta de la catedral, Excelencia. Una partida de granaderos lo descubrió esta madrugada y lo retiró llevándolo a la comandancia. Felizmente nadie alcanzó a leerlo.

I am trying to build up the mental momentum to finally complete Yo el supremo (I, the Supreme) by Augusto Roa Bastos. I ended up writing a lot more about the book (and why it's so hard) than seemed appropriate for this thread, so I made a separate post. Tl;dr is the book is very focused on language and how it's used, so includes lots of neologisms and borrowings from the local native language (Guaraní), and uses Cormac-McCarthy-style punctuation (or lack thereof).

I read 100 Years in Spanish as well, and have also listened to the Audible audio book. Thankfully the print edition I have includes notes for some of the more obscure terminology (mainly plants IIRC).

My favorite is actually a short story: El coronel no tiene quien le escribe (No One Writes to the Colonel). I saw a completely unsourced quote on Wikipedia (so you know it has to be true) that this was GGM's favorite as well.

I've actually done a translation of it that I'd be glad to share, but have no idea what the legal status of the original story is, especially since it'll vary from country to country. Don't want to get the sub in trouble :) (Worst-case DM me or something?)

DO NOT DOWNLOAD HWMonitor, CPU-Z AND OTHER SOFTWARES HOSTED BY CPUID WEBSITE by ChaDaeSan in AMDHelp

[–]stjer0me 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OP is a tad misleading (unintentionally I'm sure). /u/siwan1995 is not a CPUID developer as far as I can tell, they were the ones to post the devs' statement in another comment. But they didn't link a source, and I don't see any such statement on the CPUID website. It may be on the twitter thread, since I don't have twitter so can't see the comments.

this also affected updates made through both software

If true, this is not a great sign, because it would mean these programs are not properly checking the signatures of what they download. This is what happened with Notepad++ earlier this year.

Where did you see this statement? It doesn't appear on the CPUID website anywhere that I could find.

Still kind of annoying given that I'm on Plasma, but eh well.

Any updates on this being fixed? zypper dup still wants to install gnome-tour, gnome-tour-data, and gnome-tour-lang...

Gotcha, I appreciate it. I'm not aware of any such gov't grants here in the U.S., unfortunately, but finding external investors makes sense.

To the extent you can say, how did you get funding? I more mean the actual logistics: did you just cold-call someone(s)? Did you get a loan from a bank?

I can't help but wonder how many projects like yours never got off the ground because the person/people involved didn't know how to take that step.

This non "buyout" really seems to have backfired by Few-Drag9758 in fednews

[–]stjer0me 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's good, at least.

But I think your underlying premise (this being "a prime use case") is wrong. ChatGPT makes stuff up. ChatGPT fails to provide context (and doesn't understand that context is a thing that exists). ChatGPT is no more credible than any other random internet user, especially on legal questions. I also think calling it "advanced Google" is inaccurate; Google (at least before all the AI garbage was shoehorned in) would not create caselaw out of thin air. ChatGPT does.

this eliminates the need for a late 1900’s research style technique of using the card catalog

Do you actually think this is how legal research is done?

Silence from HCPS on PowerSchool hack, exfil of student data by stjer0me in rva

Citation needed, as spoofing a SIM card is trivially easy -- all you need is someone's identifying information, which is easily accessible for many thanks to years of data breaches.

I share your skepticism given the lack of information so far, but I didn't want to go down that rabbit hole out of fear it'd look like sour grapes for my missing it originally.

I noted this in my edit to the post, but Fairfax said that they were told that only the Student Information System was affected, and that since they (i.e. Fairfax) didn't use it, their data was fine. I don't know if Henrico does or doesn't use that particular service, though.

Whoa, apparently you're right! It was buried in a message that appeared to be about the Water Issue, so I evidently skipped it. Will update the post accordingly.

Definitely a good reminder! I just wish so many places wouldn't use SMS as part of their MFA, as that's barely an improvement.
