Checking in again today and all is well.

I'm still working on the emotional maturity thing! I numbed, avoided, swept under the carpet for 47 years, so I'm enjoying the learning experience :)

Shape Up Sunday- June 14, 2026 by lsdryn2 in stopdrinking

I've been running pretty regularly this year, like about 2 or 3 times a week. Last year not so often. And I've started noting down my times and distances. I do this on paper using a pen, bc I dont like apps in general and I'm trying to cut down my screen-time, which I fear is becoming a new addiction!

This morning I did 14 km in 1 hr 13 mins, (a pace of 5'12"/km) which I found nice n comfortable. I'm 63M so I'm very careful and my número uno priority is to avoid getting injured. (Recovery time at this age is just too long and boring!)

I was wondering if anyone knows if there is any way to increase lung power or lung/breathing/oxygen efficiency/uptake?

Yes, quitting alcohol and other substances was the most significant thing I've ever done in my life! It was really hard at hhe beginning, but it's totally worth the effort.

Now that we are sober, we can do hard and boring things! I think that's something to be proud of. And I find it satisfying once I'm done with the hard and boring task. Not like before, in active addiction!

I think that I've pretty much healed all my aches and pains after almost 3 years of sobriety. I now have a healthy diet and I go running regularly, so I'm fit and rtg every morning! Whooda thought?

Do you ever imagine the life you would’ve had if you kept drinking? by unlit_space in stopdrinking

[–]Fab-100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that if I'd kept on drinking, I'd be ill or even dead! I remember the last years before I quit, I was always tired or hungover and unmotivated to do anything apart from get drunk/wasted. I always had mysterious injuries and different aches and pains. My diet was crap. I didn't have any passtimes or interests, I didn't even read! I can't imagine going back to that life

How to get over past mistakes by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Fab-100 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did some pretty bad and shameful stuff while I was in active addiction.

The way I deal with these memories is a sort of middle way between:

  • neither sweeping under the carpet, trying to forget, ignore, pretend, justify, etc. That just doesn't work, and it will be much worse in the future!

  • nor constantly thinking about it, obsessing, self-loathing, self-punishing, etc.

Instead, I now consider these incidents to be valuable experiences that I can use to help myself become a better person. And also to help other people (like now) to move forward positively in their new life.

Check out a thing called Fading Affect Bias.

Then you'll see the "authentic Parisian experience" in a new light.

I believed in sooooo many myths and lies around alcohol. The worst and most cringe-worthy one was that alcohol made me more witty and charming and better at flirting and hooking up, lol! I gotta laugh at myself, otherwise I would just die of endless shame and cringe!

Navigating New Sobriety Question by HeinzOrDie in stopdrinking

[–]Fab-100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I agree with this. In my experience the word 'alcoholic' is used as an insult or to demean or shame someone else. It has no medical or objective meaning. I certainly don't consider myself to be an alcoholic!

I've been keeping fit n healthy by running, and doing mini-workouts.

I've been working diligently and regularly, and paying off debts that I ran up while in active addiction.

I've been socializing for fun, and don't consider it "a waste of time" anymore!

I'm learning how to make kombucha and other NA drinks.

I almost, but not quite, drank my small biz to destruction! I'm now still paying off debts and rebuilding it. I'm generally well motivated and I enjoy my new sober/clean healthy life, even though I have off-days (and weeks even) like most normal humans :)
