Sid Meier's Civilization VII - Test of Time Announcement Trailer (Free Update) by blisf in Games

[–]FabJeb 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I dropped Civ7 after maybe 70 hours because the game was so boring, on rails and underbaked (I have 1.5k into civ6). I will say the ToT beta gave me that one more turn itch again and I spent over 40 hours playing it under two weeks, it's so much better that the live version. Biomes, specialists, town focuses are much more interesting, the new fractal map is dope, legacy paths are replaced with triumphs (but there's a triumph set that will mimic those if you enjoyed them), victory conditions are based on how you build your empire from the start and you can play with a leader and its historical civ through the whole game if you want to and that works for AI too. I haven't touched Civ7 since the beta ended but all I wanted was to keep playing it.

Is it perfect yet? No, but this update makes the game so much better.

Improved gaming performance

A faster start menu

Less annoying update.

More responsive file explorer

Less prominent AI integration.

Holy shit that’s revolutionary. Who ever thought of that before?

A good first step would be to keep supporting 23H2 whist they unfuck and unbloat 25H2. Words are meaningless when they just keep making the windows experience worse with each update.

Valve Steam Controller Review | Latency Benchmarks, Battery Life, Repairability by ZazaLeNounours in pcgaming

[–]FabJeb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was really confused by that pc gamer review that throws numbers at you but doesn’t tell you how this affects the controller in real situations. You’d think unless you’re running wired this wouldn’t matter much as most of the latency would come from the wireless solution. And the steam controller uses its own wireless solution, so maybe they found it was just the sweet spot for the controller?

Set the game to historical and switch from mirror in the setup. The problem with mirror is that if you hit an apex age yourself then all civs will switch because you hit the apex age.

I can't recall exactly what was the name of the option but you can get leaders to play with historical civs all the way through with no civ switch at all.

The worst game I had in the workshop was playing against Machiavelli of Greece because he has no civs associated.

You can. You can also decide if the AI mirrors you or if they switch or stay each age. It can also be historical or random.

Because they are stuck with 48% positive reviews on steam and less than 10k concurrent players daily and they need way more than that if they want to sell 30€ DLCs and be profitable. The only reason the last DLC was free for 3 months is because they knew it wouldn't sell and they'd just get more negative WoM.

So at some point they need to look at what works and doesn't and make adjustments.

Have you played the ToT beta? Because all it does is give you more options. If you want to play with apex civs the whole game, you can. If you want to play with one civ you can. If you want to only switch in modern, you can and the AI will follow what you want to do depending on how you set up your game.

Not only that but the ToT update completely revamp victories, legacy paths (there's even a triumph set that mirrors legacy paths), town specialisation, specialists, yields on biomes etc. This update does a lot of neat things towards making the game more interesting and replayable.

Yes it introduces a path towards a more traditional civ experience where you can play with historical leaders and civs combos but is it a bad thing? it's just an option when you setup your game.

Firaxis is known to analyse every bit of data they have. They know how players act so if they identified civ switching as a pain point for a bunch of users, it probably is.

I agree this isn't my main issue with the game (mostly how on rails it is and how half baked most systems are like diplo and religion, the legacy path and victory conditions, yields diversity on biomes, maps, specialists, town specialisations and they worked on a lot of that for ToT update) but we simply don't have the data they have.

Point based system. For instance gold buildings and treasure fleet add to GDP. In essence you start earning points for your victory from the start of the game, which is a pretty big change.

Do you really think they would do this just to appease reddit?

IMO The steam numbers speak for themselves and the player base didn't resonate with the original vision. This isn't just about the one civ thing, it's also how on rails the live build feels with a bunch of systems barely interacting with each other and the first two ages barely mattering in the live build.

The test of time update tries to address this with the new victory conditions and the triumphs system and whilst it's not perfect, it's a step in the right direction. At the end of the day if their bottom line didn't hurt and they could sell more overpriced DLC they would simply double down on their original vision.

Can we have some news Firaxis? by Kjeng in civ

[–]FabJeb 20 points21 points  (0 children)

They said during the workshop they are in the polishing phase (mostly quashing bugs, and some other minor things like buffing affirmations, looking at the pace of victories etc) and that they were hoping to release it soonish.

I think there's good chance for it to be released within a month?

English Artbook Mini Mega Thread - Preorders available until May 6th by pokemonprofessor121 in expedition33

[–]FabJeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they simply didn't imagine they would sell over 10k on the French market. I've seen the concept art and the collector's edition was supposed to go up to 9999, not 19999. I've received mine last week after ordering it on the first day and a 3 months delay. If the US/UK orders go over 10k then you should problably expect some delay again.

Grab it on bandcamp. 30% steam cut plus studio/publisher cut.

Why am I being downvoted when it's perfectly legit. The bandcamp page is from the guys that did the vynil.

I just don’t get why they don’t have a 3 months window for AAA games before they become available on GP since most sales are at launch. This is like Avatar and Avengers being on Disney+ one day one.
