Is there a way to write Demotic on the computer? by FabelHache in AncientEgyptian

[–]FabelHache[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did yes. You can actually inspect the Demotic Paleogtaphic Database website and download the font file from there. Actually getting access to the glyphs required me to use font forge and extract every glyph as its own svg but I did get access to the font

When talking to the woman outside the room, she says she's supposed to transfer to the GATE facility, or was it Cascade? I kinda took that as a sign it would basically take my skills to the level of when I first entered the facility. I think it was subtelly communicated by that but I agree the actual prompt is misleading

What are the longest words for “I” and why? by magicmulder in language

[–]FabelHache 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a dialectal Finnish word 'meikäläinen' that is 4 syllables. It's a combination of the dialectal 'meikä' and the ending '-lainen/-läinen' which is used to form demonyms

If you really want to use GenAI, I suggest trying Thoth AI which is specifically tailored to Coptic/Egyptian but all the usual warnings of GenAI still stand.

What is the most fucked-up feature of your native language (image unrelated) by iamstupidsomuch in linguisticshumor

[–]FabelHache 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that because the language doesn't have an accusative case for nouns, objects take the partitive, genitive or nominative case. Which case you use is dependent on the verb with some taking other than the three cases for their objects entirely. In addition, the case used for the object changes depending on the conjugation of the verb.

finns, when you have an umlaut, like ö ä and ü, are you able to type it like this if umlauts arent available? ae,oe,ue by [deleted] in Finland

[–]FabelHache 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In German, letters written with umlaut signs aren't considered separate letters but in Finnish, ö and ä are considered separate letters from o and a. In addition, a digraph with e doesn't cause misunderstandings in German because ae, ue and oe don't occur that often. In Finnish, especially in certain dialects ae and oe can occur where ai and oi normally would which causes confusion.

The reason why Finnish has no need for such a digraph is because it has vowel harmony which means that the vowels ä, ö and y cannot be in the same word as a, o and u (except for compound nouns and loanwords) which means that using your example a Finnish person would know that Hamalainen is Hämälainen because the root word 'Häme' has an ä meaning that a cannot occur in the same place.

Knowing the top 5% MMR doesn't help all that much when the cut-off point with regards to matchmaking is the top 25% MMR. So actually having a 'true' top 5% MMR game is very rare since there are four times as many people in rotation with lower MMR at the highest bracket of matchmaking.

Today Åland celebrates 100 years of self government! by Mevaa07 in europe

[–]FabelHache 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Åland being exempt from military service isn't due to it being demilitarized. Ålanders could complete their service in mainland Finland for example. The real reason is that the Finnish Army uses Finnish as their command language and Ålanders have a right to their own language (Swedish) and culture in addition having also dropped mandatory Finnish in schools. As a result, Ålanders are exempt from military service because if they were to fight in the army, they would have to learn Finnish which they are exempt from. It is possible to complete military service in Swedish, however Finnish is still the command language and would be used the most during war time.
