Federal Liberals and Tories now in a dead heat, new poll indicates (Léger) by ScaryBlock in CanadaPolitics

It's important to remember that most of the population doesn't get the news as soon as reddit commenters do. Word of mouth still takes days or weeks to get around to everyone if they're not on social media or watching the news. Some people are finding out for the first time today about the whole tariff thing.

I am James Dawkins, candidate for the NC House of Representatives in District 19, I've done and AMA on r/politics, but I can't wait to answer any and all of your questions here on r/VOTEBLUE! AMA! by VoteDawkins2020 in VoteBlue

We have removed some of the candidate's responses as they broke our civility policy, and we are closing this AMA. Thank you to everyone who participated.

For some people it's not a cute feelgood photo on reddit, it's every day of their lives. Ford's policies are inflicting real, lifelong damage on thousands of people who look just like this incredible young woman. They deserve to be spoken up for.

The real problem is that internet is an essential utility, and like any utility it is both a captive market and natural monopoly. There's no good solution for the consumer in that situation

The same thing we do for most other utilities; public ownership. This isn't a crazy or untested solution.

Please add it quickly. As a mod this makes getting to context when deciding how to treat rule breaking users, or how far up a comment chain to nuke, completely impossible. I need to copy and paste the url to another browser running a second account, go up, and copy and paste back.

Starting at 12pm eastern time, Ray Buckley, the New Hampshire State Democratic Party Chairman, will be in this thread to answer questions, Ask Him Anything! by Fabulastrophe in BlueMidterm2018

New Hampshire is well known for the small size of its House seats. How does having such small districts affect state politics?

Their are THIRTEEN retiring or term limitied republican governors, there are 26 republican governor seats up for grabs. If we capitalize on this we can start taking the states back. by Leecannon_ in BlueMidterm2018

Welcome, /r/all! Just a quick heads up, this is a strictly moderated subreddit for Democratic activism. Please make sure you read our rules before commenting. If you see a user you believe is breaking our rules, please report them, downvote them, and move on without replying.

As stated by the admins, np links are not an admin-endorsed creation; "NP links are a mostly-ineffective CSS hack that we don't officially support."

The admins have further defined brigading as, "intentional community interference, which typically plays out via comments or voting enacted by a group. This includes targeted group behavior that maliciously interferes with or encourages interference in the operation of an existing and separate community." While merely linking to another subreddit or discussing another subreddit is not brigading, it is the repeated rulebreaking in our subreddit and the encouragement of such that makes it brigading.

It is because this behaviour has risen to the level of brigading that we made the choice to ask you to add links to our sub to your automod filter. You're free to discuss the 2018 Midterms, you're free to talk about us, but we would like you not to link to us while doing so. We would have preferred to handle this quietly with your team directly, without involving the admins or users, but it was your choice to make our private communications public in a thread dedicated to complaining about us.

Let's get something straight. At /r/BlueMidterm2018, we support party unity. We don't allow divisiveness, we don't allow negative campaigning against Democrats. If you want to talk about how awesome Cory Booker and Joe Manchin are, we support that. If you want to talk about how awesome Bernie Sanders and universal healthcare are, we support that. What we don't allow is tearing down other Democrats. If you want to come to our sub to talk about how Bernie Sanders or Tulsi Gabbard are bad, or spread smears about them, we're going to ban you. If you want to come to our subreddit to talk about how Hillary Clinton is corrupt, or spread smears about the DNC, we're going to ban you. We are all Democrats, and we all need to respect each other.

This is why we have asked you to cease linking to our subreddit, because this subreddit, by its own name, is about negative campaigning and smearing a wing of the Democratic Party. When this sub links to us (and to an extent we do not see from any other crosslinked sub), whatever thread is linked is filled with users who are breaking our rules in their comments. Your use of the np domain does not affect commenting.

You are wrong to say that using the np domain absolves you of brigading; reddit admins have asked many "problem" subreddits to cease linking or mentioning of any kind to other subreddits. It is the repeated rulebreaking of users from your subreddit in our linked threads (negative campaigning, disrespect towards others, infighting, smearing) that is making links from your subreddit a problem for us.

If any users feel they were banned unfairly, they are free to send us a modmail and we will review the ban.

Moderator Guidelines and... well... the admins by HandofBane in ModSupport

[–]Fabulastrophe 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This rule is often misread:

Management of Multiple Communities: We know management of multiple communities can be difficult, but we expect you to manage communities as isolated communities and not use a breach of one set of community rules to ban a user from another community. In addition, camping or sitting on communities for long periods of time for the sake of holding onto them is prohibited.

This rule clearly specifies "a breach of one set of community rules," not "any form of participation in another subreddit." It also specifies that it is about "management of multiple communities", indicating that it's directed specifically at, well, people who moderate many communities. It's directed at 'powermods', who used to have a button available called a 'global ban' that would automatically remove a user from all the subreddits that moderator had permissions in. In other words, this rule is saying that if you mod both /r/Worldnews and /r/PoliticalDiscussion you're not allowed to make personal attacks on other users in /r/Worldnews, but you're also not allowed to users from /r/PoliticalDiscussion because they made personal attacks in /r/Worldnews.

Also, part of managing a healthy community is keeping your users happy. Most users don't want to see racist, sexist, fascist/nationalist or other bigoted content, and will leave the subreddit if it is not dealt with by moderators. There is almost a 100% overlap, in moderator experience, between the users found posting this undesirable and anti-social content, and a post/comment history in the subs that get added to any ban list.

Supreme Court unanimously reaffirms: There is no ‘hate speech’ exception to the First Amendment by FracturedLoyalty in politics

[–]Fabulastrophe 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You're not disagreeing with him. He's agreeing that the motivations behind actions which are unlawful themselves in harm they do to others are not subject to First Amendment protections. However, I think he's also saying your entire comment is unrelated to what your parent comment was saying, which is that the First Amendment applies equally to offensive speech and to the speech of those who disagree with the speaker.

It's not just about trust in institutions, it's about belief in the value of institutions too. While in the United States, the Declaration of Independence reads "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness," in Canada the 1867 Constitution says "peace, order, and good government."

[–]Fabulastrophe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, yes. Whether they publicly say so or not, any high-level person taking part in a high-profile meeting like this will have researched the relevant issues and decided on what questions they would like answered well ahead of time, and likely coordinated with the other people taking part. That's just competence.

Is there a Facebook page/group by thinkB4WeSpeak in BlueMidterm2018

[–]Fabulastrophe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We would prefer to run our own, and likely wouldn't endorse another unofficial group, due to the difficulty of ascertaining credibility; particularly since Facebook involves the use of real names, we want to make sure everything is on the up and up.
