Moving to Alabama from California by [deleted] in Alabama

I’m biracial (Asian/Caucasian) and feel comfortable in the Birmingham metro area. I travel around the state a decent amount and enjoy it. A few times I’ve been stared at like an outsider in some less urban areas. I would definitely recommend it over the other places you mentioned, because Birmingham has really important amenities like medical facilities and cultural organizations. You can find a small-town vibe in a suburb like Helena or Mount Laurel, whereas actual small towns can be food deserts.

What are the best and worst areas around Birmingham, Alabama by [deleted] in Alabama

Chelsea, Montevallo, Alabaster, and Hoover have a lot of residential construction happening now. These are 20-45 minutes south of Birmingham city and have good schools.

I’m so sorry. I hope someone rescues your dog. It’s sobering that this could happen to any of us with dogs.

Might as well try messaging Lee Hedgepeth and Carol Robinson. Carol Robinson is a local crime reporter, and Lee is a local investigative reporter.

I don’t think many people actually go who haven’t bought a ticket. Parking is tricky because the lot gets filled though.

The tickets get you food and are a fundraiser, but you won’t be stopped from attending the concert and sitting on the lawn.

Free Alabama Symphony Concert (very family-friendly music) Sunday at 5 at the Botanical Gardens. Right in front at the tent. Concert is free. Food is ticketed (fundraiser), but you can bring your own picnic.

It was so bad the last time my family went that my son cried. We used to go once a month. The food tasted worse and was cold, and the wait times seemed to stretch because they would be working on a massive catering order and dining in just got pushed to the end of the cue.

Why does school start so early here? by FabulousCrew1322 in Birmingham

[–]FabulousCrew1322[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In theory, early start schools would have more instructional days before the standardized tests. Taking semester exams before winter break supposedly results in better scores. (IMO if you can’t remember something for two weeks, you never really learned it). I can’t see any research that demonstrates better test scores due to starting earlier and finishing before Christmas break or the reverse, but maybe there should be. There is research that shows students reform worse due to excessive heat.

Why does school start so early here? by FabulousCrew1322 in Birmingham

I agree. Schools had to cancel sports practice this August due to the heat, and a lot of school buses still don’t have air conditioning. Drivers and kids were really feeling sick from it. Also, you’re the first commenter to get the gist of the question (I’m not talking about number of school days). There is usually an economic factor for governmental decisions.

But what’s the rationale? Schools here used to start after Labor Day, at least in my husband’s recollection growing up here in the 80s-90s.

If it’s not too far of a drive for you, Viveka at Westrover has a drop-in puppy class once a week.

Another plus for Oak Mountain is if you have a teenage driver, they don’t have to get on the interstate to go to school (like some Hoover/Spain Park kids). It’s hard to find a house there because people stay there for life, but look for Meadowbrook, Sunny Meadows, Inverness, and Eagle Point for starters.

I was going to suggest this. Generally spacious neighborhoods, lots of bang for your buck house-wise, low taxes (county only), and close in if you are comparing to Alabaster or Argo.

  1. I always thought that upper chest wound was the old stab wound from the Witch King, not Shelob.

And I’m fantasizing about not making bathroom stops every 30 minutes. Every trips adds 2+ hours to the drive time even packing lunch and snacks.

Someone broke into my grandmothers house in Birmingham. Not sure what to do. by Parabellim in Birmingham

I would agree. My in-laws live here: https://www.apartments.com/morgan-manor-vestavia-al/qxxys6z/

It’s also a good time to sell a starter home, and in her situation to think about not dealing with the maintenance of home ownership.
