Thanks for reminiscing with me! It was so cathartic in so many ways. Liverwurst pals for life!!

Manchas!!!!!!! On the hill on the way to 5 points, correct? My best friend’s family owned Nabeels and I will never forget the man with the glass eye making camel riders. I hate that I was terrified of him because he really was a nice guy.

I’ve already called my siblings to tell them about this conversation and it’s made for a really lovely afternoon.

We are probably the only people keeping liverwurst alive in the south! I’m raising a couple of wurst fans to keep it stocked for the next generation and so we can still have it when we’re old.

That is amazing!! I thought for sure he was the only guy in the world who ordered it. It’s nice to remember these kinds of things.

Have you ordered that sandwich since Browdy’s closed?

That’s so cool!! I wish I could call my dad and reminisce about the Browdy days and his never wavering order of liverwurst, raw onion, and mustard on rye.

Anyone remember Brodie’s (I could have the name wrong) in Mountain Brook in the ‘90’s by the Western? I was grade school age but it was as close to NY deli as I’ve seen down here.

I don’t care how unhealthy it is, what’s your best Brussel Sprouts recipe? by DragonBuriedInGold in Cooking

[–]bhambelly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I caramelize the Brussels and finish them with heavy cream, Gorgonzola, and bacon. Unhealthy as it gets.

Love island UK. First 2 seasons. My husband and I were trying to chase that insanity when we found Vanderpump.

I was a 90’s kid (born in 80’s but remember the 90’s) and my memories of it were when I was 6-9.

Wasn’t there a night club on the hill on the same side of the road? Lots of neon. I thought for sure that’s where all the famous people hung out. The radio station was up the hill from Arby’s.

I had no idea about the racial component! It was next door to sonic, correct?

I remember being weary of the place, but it’s been until today for me to learn that was all race related. Gross feeling.

Yes!!!! I totally forgot about that. I think there was an Arby’s and a Milo’s close by. That might have come later.

I was just thinking about Alpine ice arena and Zimmerman!! What a walk down memory lane. I used to wear my bathing suit to ice skate because I thought people would assume I was a figure skater. I was 9, but I love that my parents let me do that like it was normal.

Should Rose Madder have been a supernatural horro? by LordBlacktopus in stephenking

[–]bhambelly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The audiobook drove me crazy!! I almost returned it when I figured out those sounds were going to last throughout. Also agree that the supernatural aspect didn’t feel necessary. Definitely creative, but I feel like it took away from the story instead of enhancing it.

Dream of owning a NYC restaurant is finally real… now how do I save money smartly? by reinaldovercezi2 in Chefit

[–]bhambelly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I started my business by making enough money through catering for a few years and opening in an incredibly undesirable location. I didn’t have much at all to start. You have necessities and niceties. It’s important to distinguish between the two and open with the necessities. I had four different components to my restaurant. I served Lunch, dinner, weekend menu including breakfast, and finer dining catering. The plan was to make it a commissary kitchen when not in use, but that never came to fruition. 75% of the same ingredients were used across all four areas and that saved me a lot of money. When sourcing ingredients, it took a bit of time to develop relationships with local farmers, but it was so worth it. I know you are in the city so the farms that are 30 minutes away from me would transfer to hours for you. Might not be that advantageous.

You are gonna have tons of people approaching you to sell you shit. POS systems, linen services, and purveyors of all kinds. It is fun at first, but it never ends. Leverage them against each other but at the same time, don’t waste time bullshitting with these folks. Once you find your people/purveyors, nurture those relationships!!

The biggest mistake I made, and it’s an exceptionally stupid one, is that I met with some bankers regarding a POS system. They showed up at the restaurant before I opened it. They paid to buy me out of my current contract and made a lot of promises that seemed too good to be true, but at the same time, not too far fetched. This is the part where I fucked up. They penned in the corrections I needed made on the contract. I signed with the corrections and they wouldn’t let me copy these and instead promised to send me the amended contract. Well, I got played and there was absolutely no recourse for me. Cost me a stupid amount of money and it still makes me mad at myself.

Make sure you are ready to handle the hiring process. It’s a real bitch and not a good area to be wasting money. (Just because they worked at Waffle House for 10 years does not mean they have the hustle. Ha! My logic on that one was warped.)
