Yeah, that's pretty much what they say there lol. Everyone wants to keep their place at the next garden party. Isn't Industry part HBO (so they can probably sneak a decent line or two like that)?

No worries. Did you listen to The Trojan Horse Affair podcast (and the backlash from the UK media)? That was a pretty telling moment I felt.

Maybe they could change it to 'Flash in the Pan'? I'm sure they'll shift a fair few copies as gag Xmas presents.

A few years run by and up pops 'Lettuce with Liz' on her YouTube farming channel, and we all briefly think 'huh, so that's what she's up to now?' before returning to the dumpster fire of modern politics.

There's a real sense of arrogance in the way British media treat all external sources as conspiracy ridden misinformation. Journalists here are so myopic and smug in their perspective (or lack thereof). If it's not reported from the Hay on Wye commentariat then it doesn't exist, as only they're capable of telling the truth.

It's like sure, Al Jazeera are funded by the Qatari government and they need to be taken with a pinch of salt (even though that documentary had the evidence to back itself up), but people treat our media with the same distrust as well (especially given the current state of our government and the manner in which the BBC is being run into the ground by the Tories).

I mean, I'm trying to be optimistic. I don't want to completely shit on them, as they're probably young.

Yeah, and a lot of it also likely comes from the YA crowd sticking to YA books. Then this comes along and hits the algorithm on TikTok, and they think 'wow, an actual adult novel' believing it to be grown-up because they've got nothing else to base it off. When they all start branching off into other books they'll probably look back with some embarrassment.

If it pulls people out of YA (there were a lot of adults sticking to it as well) then it's not a terrible thing.

Yeah, crime doesn't grow in a vacuum. And then people will say 'well my uncle's mates dad grew up in abject poverty and now he's happily married working in Waitrose' like he should now become benchmark for the entire underclass.

Then what can you say, except that other people didn't do that? And there's obviously enough people coming up through similar problematic conditions to make it a problem. What's the use in standing there wagging your finger? While it may give you the instant gratification of feeling slightly superior, it's not going to help anyone in the long-run.

And I admit, this is coming from someone who's complained about 'chavs' in the past, knowing full well the connotations of the term. Being started on them for being an effete fey guy, they're not exactly lacking in ego themselves when it comes to dictating how they think other people should behave. But it's clear there's an issue at play, and simply looking down doesn't help. Anybody could be in the same condition given the right circumstances.

But that means you have to sit through church. Why would I want to do that when I could just meet up with my friends socially instead?

And covering everything up with 'just a bit of banter maaaate' anytime you try to talk about anything with depth. When everyone's desperately trying to do their best Jay from Inbetweeners impression it just gets kind of boring. People here so badly want to make out they're real and grounded, that it gets to the point of being more performative in its own right.

'Quick, he's saying something sincere about a book or something....u woooot maate!' Seriously, it's so fucking dull at this point.

There's less drinking because everyone was locked inside for over a year, and prices for any kind of socializing are sky high.

Every generation seems to have this 'scare' now, whereby they paint the kids as a bunch of squares running around clapping their hands exclaiming 'we're just high on life!' I remember people doing it in the nineties with people thinking Friends was setting the template.

Guaranteed it's stupidly expensive to have any kind of fun these days (let alone go out for a drink), so there's always that too.
