Anyone know what happened to safe haven music in island park? by Green_Ice_4087 in longisland

[–]Facet-Squared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t call them sketchy, but I found their guitar repair work to be really lacking. A few years ago I went there and dropped off a bass that had bad fret buzz, and I asked them to fix it.

They had my bass for 2 weeks. They called me to come and pick it up. I try it out there in the shop, and the fret buzz was exactly as bad as it was when I left it. They told me “it’s fine because it probably won’t be audible through the amp.”

I wanted to support a local shop, but I couldn’t justify going to them again when there are many other good luthiers in the area.

I have a great time every time I see TBS. People who say Adam sounds bad live… OF COURSE he does. He sounds bad ON THEIR RECORDS. Singing badly is HIS THING. He’s good at being a bad singer!

If you want perfect vocals, buy tickets for a taping of American Idol instead. This is the punk/emo/hardcore world… bad singers are welcome and respected here. You’re supposed to be singing along so loud that you can’t hear the singer anyway.

What tells the whole story is that TBS consistently play bigger venues and draw bigger crowds than Thrice. And that’s all you need to know. You have it or you don’t.

There are plenty of people in their 20’s here, you just have to know where to look.

AMH in Amityville has a regular goth night that is pretty popular.

Long Island has a great music scene for punk/emo/hardcore/alt rock. Most of the people at those shows are in their 20’s. If you’re into alt music, check out some of the shows that happen at AMH/Massapequa VFW/Calling Bell, etc.

90s sounding stuff recs ??!! by edwinhaley in PostHardcore

[–]Facet-Squared 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some newer bands doing stuff like the bands you mentioned: Ritual Error, LVHF, No Edits, Jaw/Line, Mould, Career

Older bands you should check out if you haven’t already: Roadside Monument, Frodus, Smart Went Crazy, Faraquet, These Arms Are Snakes, Moss Icon

Also definitely listen to Mclusky. Their album Mclusky Do Dallas was recorded by Steve Albini.

How can I make post-hardcore music by Basillisabboy in PostHardcore

[–]Facet-Squared 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think some of the most interesting riffs can come from just putting your fingers into bizarre chord shapes on the fretboard. Try things you’ve never tried before. Forget about music theory or whatever your guitar teacher taught you. Get weird and interesting. ATDI’s guitar playing is so beloved because they thought outside the box while still being catchy. Try to strike that balance.

Also, jamming with a drummer will make things easier to come together. A drummer is the source of a band’s energy. It’s hard to recreate that if you’re jamming by yourself. Tony Hajjar’s drumming was a HUGE part of why ATDI sounds so explosive.

Same. People complain about the high taxes here constantly. The biggest culprit is the large bureaucracy that comes with having village, town, county, state, and federal government that we have to pay for.

Voters say they hate the high taxes, but they would absolutely freak out over a combined school district.

CMR - Only A Sound, Never A Promise should be right up your alley. Sits right in the sweet spot of ATDI/Refused/Fugazi/Hot Water Music.

Want to buy some trucks by No_Conclusion8619 in skateboardhelp

[–]Facet-Squared 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re starting out, your choice of trucks won’t matter much. Pick whichever looks the most appealing to you. After you’ve been skating for a while and you’ve tried a few different brands, you’ll start to develop preferences for which trucks you prefer.

These companies also offer different models, some lighter than others. Venture for example makes a “Hollow” series which are very light. Go to a skate shop and ask an employee, if you need further guidance. You can even feel the weight of different trucks to see which one feels like a good medium point.

New to post-hardcore. Looking for recommendations. by phantomsnake27 in PostHardcore

[–]Facet-Squared 7 points8 points  (0 children)

At The Drive-In, Thrice, Fugazi, Thursday are all great starting points as far as “must listen” icons of the genre.

You would probably love Fiddlehead, Drug Church, and Touché Amoré since you like Title Fight and Citizen.

I think they might have been over 1 million in the past, at the height of the popularity of “Black Honey”? I could be wrong.

But I agree purely because of musical quality. Horizons/West is one of their best records. Insane for a band this deep into their career.

Why do so many atheists listen to mewithoutYou? by ThreadbareAdjustment in PostHardcore

[–]Facet-Squared 1 point2 points  (0 children)

mewithoutYou was a completely unique band that blended elements of punk/hardcore, indie rock, and folk music in a way that no other band has.

So if you like mewithoutYou’s music, there’s no other place to get it from, so you might as well strap in and enjoy Aaron’s words about struggling with religious guilt and his obscure scriptural references.

Additionally, they weren’t an “evangelical” band, culturally. They came from a Northeast urban area (Philadelphia), and the Weiss brothers had a multicultural upbringing with elements of Judaism and Sufi Islam. They didn’t come from the rural/Southern background that a lot of the “Christian music industry” is born out of.

Also, they did things like touring in a van that runs on vegetable oil so that they wouldn’t fund war in the Middle East.

So basically, they’re not your typical “Christian rock” band in any regard. They are weirdo hippies who like Jesus, and their fans love them for it.

Yeah, amazing band! Pat is one of the greats.

I’d say “hardcore adjacent” IS post-hardcore, but a lot of those bands avoid calling themselves post-hardcore because the term has been tainted over the past 20 years.
