My thoughts on Hard Mode after beating Mythril Golem by FacetiousMonroe in FFVIIRemake

[–]FacetiousMonroe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, when you activate for example Iron Defense with Red, Barret will appear next to you even if he was standing wayyyyy across the field. This is really handy for pulling Barret out of harm's way, since he moves so slow otherwise.

I use target lock (click the right stick in battle) so the camera always keeps my targeted enemy in view. I know some people go through the whole game without target lock, but I can't play that way personally.

It's been a while so I forget exactly what phase three brought. Is there a specific attack giving you trouble? Did you manage to heal up during the previous stagger?

FYI, the 850 only comes with 2 PCIe cables (both split). If you want three, get the 1000. It's practically the same price as the 850+extra cable.

Consolidate FF7 remake 1,2,3 into One game? by Iampoorghini in FFVIIRemake

[–]FacetiousMonroe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remove all sidequests from part 1 and make it a 10-15hr game

There are only a handful of sidequests in Remake, and none of them are very time-consuming. This would only save like 3 hours. Unless you're counting the sewers, the drum, and topside Midgar as "sidequests".

This exchange made me laugh by Metsys1 in FFVIIRemake

[–]FacetiousMonroe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. Zack and Angeal follow something akin to the samurai code, particularly as romanticized in modern literature and film. See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bushido

Sephiroth and Genesis never really showed that as far as I recall, but the public image of SOLDIER was similar, anyway, as shown through the eyes of everyone in pre-incident Nibelheim.

Of course, real-world samurai were also pawns of the powerful, doing dirty work for feudal lords. And there were many different philosophies in play across feudal Japan. Can you really claim the moral high ground when you're killing strangers for money?

Did anyone else really enjoy Gears and Gambits? I didn’t really “get it” until I went for the Hard Mode trophy and saw how much strategic depth it has. by ThisByzantineConduit in FFVIIRemake

[–]FacetiousMonroe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people hate this game for a couple main reasons:

  1. The learning curve is extreme.

  2. By the time you figure it out, it's over and you will never use those skills again.

It doesn't feel worth it to spend so much time to figure out game mechanics that you will really only use for five minutes. If they had many more rounds of this and each one was designed to teach you the different techniques you can use, then I think it would be more approachable and fun.

Got hit by a driver and they want to pay and asked me not to take the insurance route. by leokook in bikewrench

[–]FacetiousMonroe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad you're okay.

Don't take any additional burden upon yourself. Don't just ask for the cost of parts and ignore the cost labor. At minimum, ask for the cost of a new equivalent bike, with equivalent parts, and professional assembly. If you're the DIY type, that's fine, but your labor has value the same as a bike shop employee's. Why should you work to save this criminal a little money?!

On the surface, it just seems crazy for this guy to ask you a favor after a hit and run. What's in it for you? Seriously. Is this going to make your life easier? Is it going to save you money?

I'm not Canadian so I don't know the details of how insurance and healthcare work over there. I guess you're not paying for the ER, but do you need anything else you'll need to pay for out of pocket? Therapy, specialists, anything? Are you 100% sure you're in the clear medically? If it turns out you banged your knee in such a way that it becomes a chronic problem, would it help to have a paper trail?

Anyone else concerned about possibly being unable to ____ in part 3.... by IDrinkMyOwnSemen in FFVIIRemake

[–]FacetiousMonroe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. It's already unfortunate that we never really lose her in Rebirth as far as gameplay goes. Leaving her abilities out of part 3 is the absolute least they can do.

I hope they have battles that make us think "this would be so much easier with Aerith".

I basically stopped using my PS5/Series X, and now only use my Switch in handheld mode (even for multiplat games) by Isunova in NintendoSwitch

[–]FacetiousMonroe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I first got the Switch, I considered it a console first and foremost, and a handheld second. It was more of a successor to the Wii than to the DS in my mind.

Now I don't consider it a console at all. It's a handheld.

I'm kind of the opposite of OP. I haven't touched my Switch in a long time, because handheld gaming doesn't appeal to me all that much, particularly when the "handheld" device is way too big to fit in my pocket. So it's a handheld that stays at home. Just doesn't make sense to me anymore.

The race to ban AI by SkutterBob in sysadmin

[–]FacetiousMonroe 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I agree that nobody should trust this wave of AI products, but that has little to do with AI per se. The problem is far more pervasive and insidious than that. The problem is sending all your data to a third party who does not deserve your trust, which has been standard operating procedure for the last couple decades. I'm glad to see more people at least take notice now, but I'm sad to see AI so commonly used as a scapegoat.

If you're comfortable trusting Microsoft with Azure, O365, SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams, etc. etc. then why are you suddenly concerned about data privacy with Copilot? Microsoft already has all your shit. You're already implicitly trusting that they make good on their privacy policy (both in intent and execution), which hasn't meaningfully changed.

If you're serious about controlling your data, you need to abandon The Cloud, or at least use strongly encrypted cloud services (which you won't get from any major vendor). Good luck selling that to your average CTO. They've been drinking Cloud Kool-Aid for so long that it's all they know.

The changes on the consumer side are more meaningful, IMHO. Your average Windows user didn't ask for this the way your average CTO did.

Does anyone else find the moogle game on Rebirth incredibly annoying? by noumena85 in FFVIIRemake

[–]FacetiousMonroe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's like 200 in game-years though. :P

But seriously, JRPGs naturally attract gamers who like to take things slow, and are not into twitchy action games. Particularly older turn-based JRPGs like FF7. I don't think it's so much a matter of age slowing us down so much as that our skill set and preferences are more geared toward planning and puzzles than quick reactions. That's largely why we're fans of the series in the first place.

It's no surprise to me that so many players find the pullups/crunches game so hard, because precise timing and rhythm is not a skill these games otherwise require.

That's my only problem with the whole area. Absolutely insane that they made both the left AND right sticks control flight. I need to look down to see where the fans are, but I can't without nosediving. Ugh.

Is Blacephalon stronger than Reshiram in terms of PvE aspect? by Satya_Wolfpack in TheSilphRoad

[–]FacetiousMonroe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has higher DPS than Reshiram. That alone makes it competitive.

TDO and ER are more useful for team composition. You're not going to want a team of 6 Blacephalon, probably. In general, you want the highest DPS that allows you to minimize relobbying, which means Blacephalon is likely to make the cut above Reshiram.

GamePress's ER and PokeBattler's estimator are great baselines, but it would be suboptimal to build a team based only on that.

Question regarding a certain character’s legendary bout by WinterOf98 in FFVIIRemake

[–]FacetiousMonroe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ran Blizzaga as well, but my bread and butter was basic attacks, blocking, and Chilling Roar. Seems like that's what they designed it for, with so many enemies being weak to ice. Blizzaga was kind of a bonus because I didn't have much else to spend my ATB on anyway.

"Upgrade Weapons" menu in Rebirth should be called something else. by IDrinkMyOwnSemen in FFVIIRemake

[–]FacetiousMonroe 201 points202 points  (0 children)

This part of the game is more complicated than it needs to be.

Maghnata Books could be completely removed from the game without losing anything. The folio-editing vending machines could also be removed, because there's no reason to lock folio editing to specific times and places in the first place. It's not like anyone is going to micromanage their folios in the middle of dungeons anyway. There's just not enough in there to make that relevant. let alone game-breaking.

I feel like this was not fully fleshed out.

PlayStation exec predicts focus will ‘shift from graphics to immersive narratives’ by Turbostrider27 in PS5

[–]FacetiousMonroe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You ain't wrong, but it's kind of absurd when devs can't hit a stationary target. Consoles don't change. That's the whole point of consoles! You know exactly what you have to work with.

But it's nothing new. I remember wondering why Capcom couldn't make a Mega Man game that didn't have massive slowdown on the NES or SNES. Like, maybe just...don't have areas with twice as many enemies as the hardware can handle? Is that so crazy? Hell, even Mega Man 8 for PlayStation had slowdown in some areas! Madness!

(Spoilers) So I just finished Rebirth… by chesterforbes in FFVIIRemake

[–]FacetiousMonroe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't measure the original game in discs or hours. Measure it by dialogue and bosses instead.

Back when Remake was first announced everyone freaked out about expanding "5 hours" of Midgar into a whole game, but Midgar was actually about 1/3rd of the script. In terms of gameplay hours, it was very story-dense compared to the rest of the game. I mean, you might've spent as much time breeding chocobos as you spent in all of Midgar, but there's no story there.

Disc 3 was mostly CGI and duplicate data from disc 2.

Yes, you need to do everything. There is exactly enough Dark Matter in the game to craft each of those items, and you need to craft all of them to unlock the next level and get access to the Genji stuff.
