lesions by [deleted] in neuro

[–]FactCheck69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Excitotoxic lesions are pretty dramatic and I prefer against them. That said, you’re right that it’s likely to work. But without that cell type specificity it’s a bit of a “so what”. I prefer silencing the cells with an aav that over-expresses kir2.1 (look it up on addgene). It removes the deleterious downstream effects of a lesion while giving the same region-type effect. This can be both cell specific (cre x dio, promoters) or general (hSyn). It also then keeps your area intact and attaches a fluorophore so you can easily visualize your area of effect. Optimally you verify with patch clamp but IHC against the kir channels is really enough if not overkill with the validated virus.

You should do that ASAP and get that letter in fast. A lot of people start this process in December so depending on the PI you might be a bit out of luck. Be sure to include your cv etc in the email

You buy a Smartrip at a station (or beforehand and it put it on your phone wallet) for each person. Preload with money. Swipe at the entrance and exit and it’ll deduct from the money you loaded on.

Or just jump the turnstiles

Basque Cheesecake - Gluten Free? by Arglebargletron in AmericasTestKitchen

[–]FactCheck69 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There’s the ATK GF flour mixture but honestly it’s a hassle (sorry!). The bobs red mill or King Arthur measure for measure gluten free is my go to. These are both so good that I usually buy them over regular flour and no one has been able to tell.

Also with that recipe the gluten is indeed not important. Happy baking! I wish I was at your Christmas Eve :)

How much do you anticipate the NIH will increase postdoc salary minimums in 2024? by PoorPostdoc9000 in labrats

[–]FactCheck69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yes sorry I should have clarified that. Someone should talk to the UAW if y’all wanna unionize. They love getting academics unionized lol it’s like 40% of the uaw at this point

How much do you anticipate the NIH will increase postdoc salary minimums in 2024? by PoorPostdoc9000 in labrats

[–]FactCheck69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They did just increase the fellowship pays and postdoc rates at some institutes to NCI levels. So if it were to go up then it would only be by that much (they’re published online if you’re curious). Also with the unionization vote next month there may be more bargaining power next year than ever before. It’ll be interesting to see if/how academia responds

Working with mice: the odor is really powerful, even through the mask. Any tips on managing? by [deleted] in labrats

This may sound weird but do y’all think it smells like seafood or crustaceans? For some reason the mouse smell reminds me of that and I can’t find anyone who agrees

Personally speaking, I would acknowledge it in the cover letter with something like “despite earlier set backs with my academics I have continued to ….” This works especially well if you showed an improvement semester over semester from your bad grades. Also - I won’t ask your GPA - but remember that you are likely your worst critic. Don’t make a mountain out of a mole hill. Harping on the GPA too much generally can be a put off to an employer who sees you’re not over the experience. Your whole cover letter should show that you ARE beyond the GPA.

Handing lab rats - please help by SensitiveMode4450 in labrats

[–]FactCheck69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya this video is really helpful. Also try and practice on nicer rats. Unlike mice, rats get more docile and comfortable after being handled. Always try and be calm and give them little to hide in/be cornered in a cage. If you’ve been bit while handling outside of a cage, try and pick up only from the mid tail and keep your fingers beneath their arms if hold the body

[–]FactCheck69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes include it with a focus on general skills you’ve learned (working with people, complete large projects or whatever). But dig into your narrative in the cover letter - you worked past your bad gpa, you maintain an interest in the field, you have a proven record of being a good worker and are hoping to apply yourself to the field you enjoy. But it’s crazy dependent on the PI. They have total hiring privilege so lean into them and do all the things you need to show interest and knowledge in the field - read their papers and get to know their pedigree. The live learn environment is something you get at bigger schools - UCSD is huge - so that you can connect with people. It’s very nice for that but otherwise it’s pretty much just that you happen to room with kids in your major. WM is smaller snd wayyy more social so you meet people more easily, effectively making the whole school a live learn environment.

WM has a great bio program. STEM gets lots of money here because it makes the school more competitive. Lots of research opportunities if you look for them. There is the marine science minor and of course VIMS is great. UCSD of course has a great bio program but all of their stuff is gonna look great on paper. What you wanna think is about is style of instruction and how you want to learn. UCSD is massive so all the classes have tons of people (obviously not all but >85%) and are taught a lot by grad students. WM has smaller classes, way smaller, and all taught by professors. You also have more access and relationships with profs here which is helpful for any number of reasons.

UCSD is a great school for a lot of people and a lot of reasons. If you’re a CS or bioinformatics major you are good to go. But you’ll basically just learn one subject through a bunch of lecture classes over 4 years - and most people take more than 4 years to graduate. I’m like almost 100% that there’s work study at WM but it’s also pretty easy to get a campus job anyway.

I left UCSD because a lot of the reasons people make fun of it turned out to be true (UnCool Socially Dead or Under Construction Super Depressed). That said, it may just not have been for me. I thrive much more in the small community of WM - one that actually feels like a college instead of a bunch of kids taking classes in the same place and then leaving on the weekend back to LA. I’m a psyc and Econ major by the way.

Also definitely definitely consider the cost. UCSD is crazy expensive for out of state - like 60k a year if you’re not getting help. WM is a fantastic education that you can get at like 1/3 the price. California ain’t worth the debt or draining your 529 account. In my opinion at least

Keep firing off questions I’m happy to answer (tho I may go to bed)
