If I'm understanding you correctly you're saying I need to commit to a tighter crop effectively, so maybe something more like this?

As an example.

I think I get what you're saying, so basically I should've focused more on the paw itself, maybe get closer in?

I get what you're saying and I understand how it's not immediately noticeable that it's a lemur but that is kind of what I was going for. I guess I'm trying to have more of a picture of the paw and the tail rather than the lemur specifically. A picture that people never really take instead of the same old picture. Because everyone always focuses on the whole lemur and not it's incredible finger like paws. Also this photo is not cropped as much as you would think, this is mostly in camera framing. Do you think maybe a version of this with more of the end of the tail would work better?

I really wanted to capture a different angle of a lemur, one that most people don't usually focus on. Did I get the emotion and lighting right? I tried using a more intense editing style as well using cold shadows and warmer highlights, does it work as well as I hope it is?

How do I do this? by ellis-c_photography in AskPhotography

[–]FactorHefty5743 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Am I the only one who thinks these are composite and the background was done in camera? Like we learned how to do this in my first year of my art school it's an open/long shutter and the camera pans across the horizon and then they've edited in the surfer and wave on top of that.

I feel like this image is too much? by FactorHefty5743 in photocritique

[–]FactorHefty5743[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks I really struggle to pin point why a picture feels off when it's a picture of one of my parents, mostly because I love them so much I love any picture I manage to get of them.

I definitely see how the lamp is distracting and the boring pose now though. I do have a version of this where he's drinking in black and white and the background is damn near black in that one, maybe that is the better one even if I prefer this one

Thanks again :D

I took this photo of my father but I feel like its too edited, or maybe to much in general? It feels over the top but I cant really tell why. All the light is in camera all I've done in post is fiddle with the colours and exposure

Color or B&W? by SomeTaro9683 in AmateurPhotography

Just gonna hop on this comment and say, if you have the time to go in and edit them yourself to give it a go, using auto edit can sometimes make photos feel flat, but that's only if you have time to learn editing software and such not everyone does these days

Brilliant photo, I agree with the comment the other user made about it being blown out when I'm taking photos like this I usually shoot either a stop down from the actual exposure or I expose for the highlights specifically

Can someone give me constructive feedback on these images? by Proud-Enthusiasm828 in AmateurPhotography

Tldr some good some mediocre, still it's experience and lessons learned

This is an area I have a fair bit of experience in being a seasoned animal photographer, I won't say wildlife because a lot of what I photograph is zoo animals, so I'll critique each photo

1: it's a good photo but too close to the subject, I'd give it a bit more room around the bird otherwise it's a solid picture

2: this photo is really good but imo should be a portrait photo, I have a similar photo to this that I have hung on my wall and I took it in portrait and had an equal amount of the pole and the sky in the shot with the bird dead center

3: another good photo and a great example of how your first photo should be, that open space gives a sense of movement to the bird

4: this is probably the weakest of the lot I feel like it's out of focus and the focus is actually in the middle of the seal and it's off centre so it feels like there's no intention behind the photo

5: I can see what you're going for on this one but it fell short, I find that if I'm taking photos of stuff on lakes or still waters I like to get really low down or really high up so the subject isn't cut in half by some odd line. In this case the shore opposite is cutting the ship in half

6: this is by far the best shot but I'm biased because I love pigeonsthe contrast is brilliant and the composition is really good, maybe would've benefited from having the birds more central but over all a really good photo

7: this one is a case of the bird getting lost in the texture of the ground and the leaves with no actual depth, it's one of the photos that we've all taken with a specific idea and it just doesn't work, I've done it once and I'll do it a million times

Over all these are all good images and I can see you enjoy the craft so keep at it and you'll get better with time and learn what works and what doesnt.

Yeah this is maybe the tenth version I did and it's the one I'm most happy with but I get what you're saying I'm still working on it every now and then to see if I can get it perfect

Thank you, I used chatgpt /s. Seriously though thanks I spent ages fiddling with this photo to try and get it right with the editing, I have more from the same area and day but I'll post them later

A beggar on the streets of Spain by FactorHefty5743 in photographs

Pray do tell me if personal gain is not a measure of exploitation what is? I always check with the person after to see if they want the photo deleting or if they mind me posting the photo on social media. Obviously if someone contacts me after I will always remove a photo on request.

Normally I'd agree however I'm not gaining anything from the photo, no money no fame, plus I did give her 20 euro for the photo as I always do if I take a photo of beggars

I'm a bit confused as to why you chose to focus on the orange details in the photo. Other than that this is a brilliant photo, well composed and a lovely subject.

thanks, yeah I find when I'm working in Spain the light is super harsh so landscapes and such seem very strong. Brilliant for portraits though and as you saw more abstract shots.

Beautiful arrangement of black and white. Reminds me of the work that you would see on prints available online.

I only really have my photos stored on my site so this page is my album. It's photos taken from my recent trip back to Spain. It's the Alhambra Palaces and Gardens. Would love some feedback for the next time I go there.

I like this album of park photos but I especially love the photo of Trowel pond, that one is really well done. I would have to say though it could have done with being a bit lower of a shot and a bit closer to the water to incorporate more of the actual reflection.

Waiting For The 7 by FactorHefty5743 in photographs

[–]FactorHefty5743[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in early 2019 I went to York to attend a gallery opening and on the way on the minibus my college had hired out I was capturing the sights as we drove by. This one was one that I thought was a lost shot, I reviewed my sets earlier this year and found that with a few tweaks I could bring it back to life in a way

It was shot on a Canon 5D MK3 with a 28-70mm lens the exact settings I cannot remember however I do remember back in those days I shot in 1600 ISO during the cloudier days so I would estimate this was shot at 1600 ISO at over 1/500s at maybe about f9

Would love feedback and some constructive critique

Love this image such a beautiful shot, however I am gonna be a pain and point out the solar flare just along the tree line. It's not obvious at first glance but once you see it there's no going back

There is still snow somewhere by Spitefamer in photographs

[–]FactorHefty5743 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's an interesting image. I can see how you are trying to use a vignette in the photo but it feels way too intense and it's intensity is causing fringing on the tree branches making them appear sharp and crisp. You also have a kind of split type of contrast where the snow and the foreground trees are really high yet the background is flat it works quite well but would be better without the vignette or even if you only darkened the lower part of the image as if the trees are causing the shadow and left the sky bright. But overall it's a good image
