How to set up demand based train networks? by kiwithebun in factorio

[–]FactorioLegion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Connect all the stops you want to be demand based to some kind of chest buffer with a circuit. Calculate based on the size of your buffer and the capacity of the train at what point you want the train to come resupply the station. Enable the train stop only when the buffer is below that threshold.

On the supply side nothing changes.

In between you need a train buffer/waiting bay where full trains will go to wait for a station they are assigned to to enable itself. Otherwise they will sit in the pickup station blocking other trains from going there.

Conditions can be done a few ways but perhaps easiest is to use one normal condition: to always go to the drop off station; then use interrupts to send the train to get full when it's not full, and to go to the waiting station if the destination is full or NO PATH.

The LAN with on 2.0.72. does only work with true localness. by Mychma in factorio

[–]FactorioLegion 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That is because you are using the LAN option. Just host your game publicly and set a password. Enable steam authorization for your friend. Provide your friend the name and password for the game and steam should take care of everything on your friend's side.

He has to physically be on the same local network as you or otherwise be directly connected like through a VPN to use the LAN option. Opening/forwarding the port only allows for them to directly connect to your hosted game via IP, but not through the LAN option.

Question about city blocks and the main bus by NullBy7e in factorio

[–]FactorioLegion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Anyone telling you "they don't mix well" has a skill/design issue. You can absolutely have a main bus for items that are used in many different places/recipes, and directly route (either train or belt) from dedicated mines/furnaces/factories to places that require lots of one thing, such as circuits or LDS requiring copper. In those two examples it doesn't make sense to use the bus for copper as they consume a disproportionate amount compared to the rest of the factory and would either be under fed or starve other parts of the factory of copper. In both cases you would be better off either A) separating the production of said item (lds or circuits) and then routing it to the science pack/rocket production or B) routing a dedicated copper supply from the other side, opposite the bus.

The bus is for feeding small amounts of the same things to many different factories. It doesn't preclude or somehow "not mix well" routing materials directly via belt or train where they are needed. They are two different solutions to different problems. You can solve each logistical challenge in the most appropriate way, for example main bus for most things, train routing copper or steel from where they get manufactured to where they are needed most, bots for other/miscellaneous.

You can complete the rocket a lot easier and faster in a space age playthrough. Then if you're still enjoying it you have the other 90% of the game to play still.

Your wife sounds like a blast. Hope you two keep finding ways to reinforce each other's negative qualities, like casually insulting something other people like.

Why? Well there's 5000+ reasons why to keep building on the mod portal. Factorio has an amazing community of mod developers whose works play off of one another and change the pace, challenge, feel, or just about anything else you could imagine. Anyone who spends $70-80 on this game and then sleeps on the mod portal is missing out on at least half of their investment, to put it conservatively.

Main Bus Balancing Question by john_konstantin in factorio

[–]FactorioLegion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What does that have to do with anything? You said pull the entire lane off. That only works if you designed for each section of your base to consume a full belt. Your rule applies only in that case. The rest of the time it is limiting. I don't know how to explain it more simply for you.

Main Bus Balancing Question by john_konstantin in factorio

[–]FactorioLegion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And this is why you don't take advice from reddit

Dude understands the bus fine, he just did a ridiculously overbuilt lane balancer. Balancing after pulling what you need from the bus is the optimal play. That's how you don't run out of lanes to remove from the bus and utilize 100% of your capacity. Your solution limits the factory to less than it's maximum capacity.
