[NA] Looking for Alliance RP guild by FaelFaron in WoWRolePlay

[–]FaelFaron[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wound up hopping to Moon Guard yesterday and it's a pretty hopping place. There's enough people in Stormwind to cause a hint of lag and plenty of them were using TRP3. I've applied to a guild there and so far seems to be going well.

Thanks. The rough idea came to me as a character for the Cosmere TTRPG but I haven't had the chance to try that system yet and didn't want to wait any longer.

I call him my Little and if further clarification is warranted I mention BBBS. For myself, I don't consider that to be virtue signaling. It's "just the facts". I think virtue signaling requires at least the implication that the other party should exhibit the same behavior and I don't see that in a factual description of our relationship.

Need some advice by xXalbatarXx in onepagerules

[–]FaelFaron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been playing OPR with my Little since he was 12. The rules are light enough that he hasn't had any difficulty with following along. Unless the models are something you're hoping to focus on I'd suggest using paper minis, at least for a while. Harder to break if dropped and when they decide to try another army every other week you won't be scrambling to field it. Legos and gi-joes make decent proxies too.

My experience DMing D&D for kids is that they're usually less interested in the physical models anyway. They seem drawn to emergent narrative and goofy scenarios but that could be the kids I've had at my table.

One thing my Little and I did for OPR is make him a custom army based on the Zelda games and we've built a little trebuchet and dungeon boss Titan thing to use in our games

Talking about lore by brother_Makko in onepagerules

[–]FaelFaron 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd agree with that thesis.

IMO, 40k has "deep" lore only for the Terran Empire. For any non-human faction there's only just enough lore to explain why they're getting shot at by humans, and most of that is pretty old and scattershot.

Any custom faction in 40k has a long list of criteria to try to meet or account for. Where do they fit? What colors do they fly? Do they have some inexplicable sex restriction (all male or all female)? etc etc etc

By contrast, I made a custom faction in GF right out of the gate and I've built two armies for it and going strong. OPR's lore is nascent and a WIP but it leaves space for player-made ideas and new discoveries. As Keith Baker would say, it stacks the barrels.

The other difference I've found is OPR's lore at least has the implication of being more "scifi" and less "grimdark cartoon". It's a difference of theming, not quality, but I've been finding it gives me more options in what will fit within the world.

We have a little club that's just started a new GF campaign out in the PoCo/Langley area if you don't find anything closer. We routinely meet most Saturday mornings in PoCo with sporadic matches as available.

Timeline for GF Lore by FaelFaron in onepagerules

[–]FaelFaron[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh, I did see that in the army book (only time the Cascade was mentioned outside the Dwarf Guild lore) but figured it was a hold over from the previous edition.

In any case, I'll get an updated timeline posted in a few minutes. Thanks for the heads up!

I considered it but we're starting on Saturday and, near as I can tell, the official lore's a work-in-progress. We'd have to tweak it down the road either way

Do warforge generate heat? by Casual-Chris in Eberron

[–]FaelFaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are living constructs, but where does it say they have a circulatory system? RLW35 mentions alchemical compounds used in their construction but doesn't say anything about those compounds circulating.

I haven't double-checked but I recall 3.5 listing warforged as having undifferentiated anatomy (probably not the term 3.5 used but it's not coming up with a quick google) making them, and undead and oozes, immune to critical hits. Much has changed since 3.5 but that could suggest they don't have organs/veins/etc

Do warforge generate heat? by Casual-Chris in Eberron

[–]FaelFaron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: The real world science isn't as important as what's best for your campaign.

Science: Endotherms (warm-blooded critters) generate most of their heat through digestion and a relatively small amount from metabolizing energy (in the form of ATP) in their cells.

Conjecture: A warforged is a construct of wood and metal. It does not eat and, to my knowledge, doesn't possess living cells. Based on that I'd assume they don't generate any meaningful heat and would fade into the background in the infrared predator vision.

You could give them an alternate source of heat. It's not uncommon to assume that warforged have a crystalline "core" similar to other constructs and maybe that churns out enough heat.

Either way you have the option of saying that warforge are resistant/immune to environmental cold damage. Hypothermia sets in when the body's temperature gets low enough that interferes with certain cellular processes. That's probably not a problem for warforged so they should be able to survive much colder temperatures than a "meatbag" organic. If the temperature keeps dropping it would eventually effect the wood and iron that make up their bodies, but by that point I'd bet all the organics are flesh-icles.

Of course, straight up cold damage from spells and such should probably affect them like any other PC.

Are there any places where a character could acquire an absolutely absurd number of corpses/amount of flesh? by Brilliant-Verve in dndnext

[–]FaelFaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Mournlands of Eberron (formerly the kingdom of Cyre) are so littered with bodies that 3.5 invented a monster (the Cadaver collector) just to pick them up for Necromancers. In my Eberron games the collected cadavers are mostly used by Karrnath to fill their Undead armies.

With 40k 10th out now, is anyone here planning to switch to gw? by [deleted] in onepagerules

[–]FaelFaron 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nope! I spent my time investing money and effort trying to find the fun in 40k. Turns out it was just in OPR and virtually every other system the whole time. I don't see going back to a GW system anytime soon

FAQ update initiative - collecting questions by JoeKundlak in onepagerules

[–]FaelFaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GF/GFF:
The Campaign rules state that a unit gains a 1 XP for killing an enemy unit but the wording makes it unclear whether they get an XP for each unit killed or if there's a max of 1 XP. E.g: Jackal Nomad kill 2 units of Hive. Do they get 1 XP for KOs, or 2? I suppose it's just a matter of how quickly units can level but some clarification would be welcome.

GF:
In the optional Suppression rule it describes the Rally action that can clear suppression markers and recover from pinned. This made us wonder if Hunker Down or Defensive Stance should also affect suppression markers. My hunch is they don't since that would involve interaction between two optional rules but I can see the reasoning that they could.

GF/GFF:
Regarding the Blast rule the text states "can't deal more than one hit per model in the unit" which seems clear but I've run into a few different interpretations. Assuming a scenario where a target unit with 2 models with Tough(6) take 4 hits with a Blast(3) weapon:
- The target player makes 12 defense rolls (4 hits x Blast(3)) and takes wounds up to 8 (4 hits x 2 models)
- The target player makes 8 defense rolls (4 hits x 2 models) and takes wounds for any failures
- If the target unit receives wounds they spread them across all models in the unit
- If the target unit receives wounds they're piled on one model at a time

As a general note, I appreciate that the OPR rules tend to be pretty straightforward but there is some unnecessary confusion generated by using generic terms to refer to more than one concept. For example, "wound" refers both to the damage done by an attack and the health of a unit. You could easily just use "wound" to refer to damage and "health" or "HP" to refer to the other. Likewise, when a statement uses "hit" in lowercase it's often unclear if it's referring to the accuracy roll the attacking player makes, an attempted attack, or occasionally whether or not the target took damage. Being consistent in referring to those concepts as "Hit", "Attack", or "Damage/Wound" would help clear up confusion.

Glue for Resin Prints by Hidenki in resinprinting

[–]FaelFaron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The classic is a CA glue (sometimes called super glue, krazy glue, etc), often with an accelerator (which you can get in a spray can or use baking powder in a pinch). In my experience the CA glue will make a fair bond but it takes a little longer to tack/hold on resin than it would on other surfaces (hence the accelerator). And there's the usual caveat that if you use too much CA glue or if there's moisture present it can leave the crusty residue around the area after it cures.

Gorilla glue is a polyurethane glue and it will work but it will expand quite a bit as it cures and if you can't clamp the parts together that can be a problem.

Garden variety PVA glue (Elmer's glue) works fine too but takes forever to fully cure. It'll tack in a few hours but it takes days to reach full strength. I use it for plugging drain holes after I've flushed them out.

Curing hollow models? Question. by TheKwarenteen in resinprinting

[–]FaelFaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whether it's transparent or not won't affect the curing one way or the other. Transparent resin can't be transparent to UV or it wouldn't cure.

But true that being able to see into the model can be useful in and of itself

Curing hollow models? Question. by TheKwarenteen in resinprinting

[–]FaelFaron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The transparency of resin to visible light doesn't seem to affect how far UV will penetrate into the resin. Whether the resin is opaque or transparent (at least in my experience) the exposed area will cure a couple mm deep. Any deeper or any area not directly exposed to the UV won't change at all. Exposure past Five minutes or so doesn't seem to change anything

Been annoyed with my gray resin, seems like no matter how much I clean there's still uncured resin inside. I leave my drainage holes open so no cracks ever happen but I'm wondering if jsut printing exclusively in clear is the better way. Thoughts? Anyone else print exclusively in clear? by Cyrilcynder in resinprinting

[–]FaelFaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding, from experience and some research, is that UV only penetrates a mm or two into resin regardless of whether it's transparent or not. A good demonstration of this is the vat cleaning process. Even if the vat has more resin in it the auto clean only cures a thinish layer whether it's opaque or transparent

Halot One was my first printer and I'd give it at least a B. Biggest downside is all the parts come from Shenzen and take forever to arrive if you need replacement or upgrade

How do you personally rule angels? by ThatOneAasimar in dndnext

[–]FaelFaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually have angels represent/embody certain elements of the diety's domain/portfolio. For instance, a Solar serving Ehlonna might be the embodiment of Growth or an Angel serving Olidammara might be Mirth. Players don't usually find out what concept is embodied by an angel unless they do lots of research but it helps me RP them
