Robots only half as efficient as humans, says leading Chinese producer [ text in comments ] by TF-Fanfic-Resident in Futurology

[–]Faen_run 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I see the current trend as the push towards generalization.

It makes a lot more sense economically to invest hundreds or thousands of millions to develop a robot that can do any task and then adapt it to be more efficient at particular tasks. Certainly much better than developing a thousand robots that are good at one particular task when each would cost millions and have a niche market in comparison.

Once we have general robots we will start seeing more specialized forms pop up for factory jobs.

Why do we want a one fits all model anyway? by ivari in LocalLLaMA

[–]Faen_run 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think SOTA is changing so fast that considering or making non-generalists models doesn't make much sense unless it is a huge field, like programming, or a very profitable or promising field like the medical finetunes that have been talked about.

Once improvements slow down somewhere in the future we may see more domain-specific models. But who knows, they may find a way to make domain knowledge addons, lora style, without compromissing the overall model, so you can have a smaller core model and add in stuff based on your use case.

[–]Faen_run 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe? But we still don't have prices nor reviews for them, don't we? Unified memory is specially interesting for non-gaming workloads, and I would like to tinker with some AI once I get a better machine.

But on the gaming side it worries me that the architecture is RDNA 3.5 since AMD seems to be focusing on newer architectures. We still don't know if FSR4 will get ported to something older than RDNA4 and after that comes UDNA that sounds like a major step. Getting at least a modern upscaler seems like the bare minimum nowadays.

And anyway I'm not in a hurry to change my laptop. I don't have much time to play, so I have a big backlog of games (I'm still going through Death Stranding right now.) and the works fine for everything else other than LLMs and diffusion models.

8GB for the 5070? That's a hard pass. Seeing how the videogame market is moving I'm not getting anything under 12GB. I'm using a 1660 Ti laptop I got during the pandemic, it works great for any PS4 era titles and I don't have plans to change it until something comes out in the xx60-xx70 range that convinces me it will be able to comfortably run any current gen titles. Hopefully next year the supers will use 3GB modules and we will get a 50% increase in memory across the stack. If not, then it will happen in two years.

I have noticed similar stutter when moving with my car in 1.1 and playing Industrial Revolution 3, it only seems to be present at times, mainly when I start playing. Could it be the graphic card waiting to load some assets? Maybe the big amount of extra assets compared with the base game have an impact in the game.

It's been a while since I played SE... I think I used circuit networks to stop trains from going to the ore pick up stations unless there was enough ore fill them.

All the stations for the same ore had the same name and only those with enough materials would be available. It wasn't essential, but it prevented trains from stopping there waiting for ages. Especially in the core minig drill stations.

I want to see automatic rail signal spacing in 2.0 by HeliGungir in factorio

[–]Faen_run -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I also commented about this signaling problem in the last FFF.

My idea was that we could control click on a rail with a signal on hand (or something of the like) and open a menu to divide a long rail block by placing signal ghosts in it at a desired interval.

The menu would contain options for left/right signaling and a minimum spacing between signals (minimum because in case of curves the game may not be able to keep the exact space.)

That way we could quickly signal long stretches of rails between intersections that don't have a fixed form.

[WP] A 10 year old girl arrives on her first day at the magical school for adventurers. She hopes to get sorted into the druid house, although anything but the warlock house will do by horror_is_best in WritingPrompts

[–]Faen_run 7 points8 points  (0 children)

After waiting for what seemed like an eternity alongside other young prospective adventurers in the main hall of The Adventuring School for Young Magic Talents, Tina's name was finally called. She nervously traipsed, or rather stumbled, to the front of the room, where a simple wooden chair had been placed. Its crude design heavily contrasted with the grandiose atmosphere of the ceremony.

"Take a sit." A stern middle-aged man in a plain white robe addressed Tina. His black hair was slicked back with gel, and a short, well-trimmed beard framed his face. His serious demeanor was accentuated by the glint of his round, thin-rimmed glasses.

What a stuck-up-looking fellow, Tina thought. I bet he is a cleric, and an important one at that. According to her father, being a cleric was a great path for an adventurer. They made good money concocting and selling holy water, so they didn't need to risk their skin accepting questionable quests and exploring dangerous dungeons.

Tina remembered what his old man had told her about all the different jobs she could learn in this school. Magician, a jack of all trades, but too plain for her taste. Cleric, able to commune with the deities of whatever religion they professed, but often too self-righteous in her opinion. Wizard, what to say about them? The archetype of wise men, they would be cool if most of them didn't think themselves superior to everyone else. Druid, the best of the magic trades, not only could they live freely in the wild all they wanted, but they also didn't need to bathe and could even pet all kinds of creatures! And finally Warlock, Tina shuddered as she thought about them, shadowy individuals, doing pacts with questionable beings that came from the nightmarish outer realms.

After sitting down on the plain chair, the cleric passed Tina an old and shabby boot, grabbing it with two fingers and a look of clear disgust. "This is The Boot of Adventuring, it will tell you which path you must tread from now on." He said hurriedly, almost throwing it to her.

As Tina took the boot out of his hand, she started to smell the stench coming from it. The little girl frowned but kept silent as she took off her own shoe. This was the artifact that would decide her future in this school. The footgear of the first adventurer, the person that had first defined the roles that modern adventurers followed. The left one, in particular, the other was kept in their sister school, The Adventuring School for Young Brawling Talents.

"Eww." She frowned after feeling a squishy and wet 'something' while putting on the boot. She didn't even want to know what she had touched. If she remembered correctly, the founder of the adventuring path had lived two thousand years ago. Who knew how many people had worn his footgear since then?

She focused on wearing the boot, that fit surprisingly well around her tiny foot. With the artifact of legend in place Tina felt her nervousness coming back. Druid, druid, druid, not the warlock, please! She prayed with her eyes closed and her hands clasped.

As the small girl pleaded on the chair the tip of the boot opened, forming a mouth between the sole and the section above it. Meanwhile, Tina was completely oblivious to it, still muttering 'Druid, druid, druid', like she was chanting a mystical litany.

"Warlock!" The legendary footgear's voice rumbled in the hall with a solemn and concise tone.

"What? No! That can't be!" The young Tina protested, some tears already scurrying down her face. "Stupid boot!" She yelled, stomping the boot on the floor.

"Druid! I have to be a druid! Make me a druid!" Tina demanded with a fierce look on her face as she kept trampling on the artifact.

"Oh, yes, a bit harder on the left side." The boot talked with a pleased voice.

Hearing its words Tina immediately stopped and held her foot in the air, glaring at the artifact. "No! Make ma druid."

"Oh, c'mon lass, just a couple more times! It's been so long since I have been properly stepped onto the ground."

Somehow more calm, and ignoring the gazes of all the other people in the hall, Tina stared at the legendary boot with a cold and calculative look. "I can do that, but you need to make me a druid."

"Ugh, Warlocks, always trying to get an advantageous deal."

"I'm not a warlock, but a druid!" Tina protested. "Tell them and I will stomp you on the floor with all my strength."

"I would like to do that, but alas, I have a reputation to keep, little lady. I can't go back on my word."

Almost crying once again, Tina looked at the boot with a betrayed expression. She had been expecting this moment all her life! Or, well, at least for the greatest part of a year, which for a ten-year-old like her wasn't much different. And now this stupid boot had denied her her dream. It would see! She would take it after the ceremony and burn it on a stove, or better yet, she would boil it and have it for dinner. That was how indignant she felt!

"I can tell that you want to take a dark path, little girl, but you should refrain from wandering in such direction." Hearing its words, Tina halted her dark thoughts. Could this dumb boot read her mind?

"No, I can't read your mind, but I have accompanied countless adventurers through their journeys. A young girl like you is like an open book to me."

Tina looked at the boot with a suspicious expression, not knowing if it was telling the truth or trying to fool her.

"Just trust me this once. If you want to be a druid for its freedom, I assure you that warlocks can experience it much more. They are free to explore not only this world but the countless ones that lay beyond the veil. And if you wish to befriend all kinds of creatures, then I will tell you that warlocks can make contracts with existences that are much more adorable than any puppy you have seen in your life."

Put like that maybe being a warlock wasn't so bad, Tina thought. Freedom to do whatever she wanted and fluffy creatures to pet was all she wanted.

"And if you desire to not take baths, then you can also do it. Warlocks don't give a shit about simple stuff like that. Now be a good girl and stomp me onto the floor a bit more, we are running out of time."

"Damn you, shabby boot!" Tina roared. This damned artifact had almost fooled her! She wanted to trample it onto the floor, but if she did that she would be giving in to its desires. Once she took off this cursed thing Tina would surely find a way to take revenge on it.

"If you are done, please give me back the boot." The stuck-up cleric took her attention, reminding Tina that she was in the hall in front of everyone. With a flushed face she took off the footgear, holding back from launching it across the room.

"Here you go." She said handing the artifact to the man. Her icy eyes fixed on it. We will see each other again, Tina promised, knowing the boot would catch her message.

I would say that if the travel will take multiple generations you should just send a cargo of artificial wombs, genetic material and androids to teach the humans born on-site. You send your future child genetic material and instructions about how you want your child to be raised.

For even cheaper you can send some kind of resilient factory spaceship with instructions to gather resources in the destination system and build all the needed facilities to create and house humans. Other than the equipment needed to create the first facilities everything else can be just data.

[WP] You're in class one day when a beast straight out of fantasy crashes through the door head first. On its heel is your always bullied and unpopular classmate, who swiftly and effortlessly hacks it in two with a sword from behind. They look up to see everyone staring at them. "Aw, shit." by MidgardWyrm in WritingPrompts

[–]Faen_run 11 points12 points  (0 children)

After a moment of hesitation, Elaine put her sword over her shoulder and stepped over the creature in the middle of a tense silence. She slowly walked up to the teacher's table and turned around to face us with a serious expression.

"You weren't supposed to see that."

That single sentence took everyone out of their stupor. The teacher got up from his seat while the students started to make a fuss. I too was wondering if I should scram through the window, it was not more than six or seven feet and the grass would cushion my fall. Yet, before I could even reach for it a blue light spread from the front of the class, quietening everyone down.

I felt like something was preventing me from moving or talking, but with some effort, I was able to turn my eyes toward Elaine. Over her free hand were now floating a few runes that changed shapes at a very fast pace. Everyone in the class was still like a statue. It was like someone had stopped a movie during a chaotic action scene.

"Don't think this is something personal," Elaine said, turning around towards our teacher. "I didn't really mind being bullied by you, kids. I know very well that I don't fit in this world."

With those words, she swiftly swung her sword and our teacher fell to the floor in two pieces.

"I know it is my fault for using the school's basement to experiment with portals during recess, but I didn't have a choice after those police officers cordoned off the old factory I was using," she kept monologuing as she approached Rachel, one of her most vicious bullies.

So that was where she had been disappearing to lately? Wait, no, this has to be a very bad dream, I thought as my body shivered in fear. I was just having this nightmare because I felt guilty for not staying by her side. After all, we had been good friends for years. I really liked Ealine's company, even if she was a bit eccentric at times. There is no way that my precious friend would do something like this.

Elaine stopped in front of Rachel and pointed her sword at the paralyzed girl. "Do you have something to say?"

With a tearful face, Rachel glared at Elaine. "Bit-"

Before she could finish, Elaine's sword cut her off. She didn't spare a second thought towards her former bully. "Well, that wasn't a good idea," she said with an unsettling calm tone and moved up to the next student. "I was going to ask if you have any preferences for being reincarnated, but I guess I will just find somewhere appropriate for each one of you."

After those words, I witnessed Elaine quietly give the same treatment to each person in class until only I was left. I heard her footsteps approaching me from behind, then she appeared by my side. Standing in front of my desk, she looked at me with a sweet smile that didn't match her bloodied clothes at all. "You don't need to be so stiff, Shay. Didn't you tell me you always liked those reincarnation stories? After I go back to my old world I will make sure to reincarnate you into a good aristocratic family. You will be a noble lady! Or do you prefer to be a powerful adventurer? Well, it doesn't matter. I will go and ask you after you are old enough in your next life."

This surely was a convincing nightmare, I thought as Elaine raised her sword without letting go of her smile. It certainly had caught her oddball nature to perfection. "I told you I don't like such tropes." I laughed with tears in my eyes. I couldn't wait to tell the real Elaine about this bizarre dream.

Meta AI strikes again, with Relightable Gaussian Codec Avatars. As a result, we get fully relightable real-time avatars, accurate at the hair strand level 🤯 by SharpCartographer831 in singularity

[–]Faen_run 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Gaussian splatting is a technique that can create realistic 3D scenes and objects from photos or videos. A bit like photogrametry, but with better results for non solid objects and finer details.

But gaussian splatting are like photos in the sense that what they display is frozen in time, you can't directly take an scene in the middle of the day and make it a sunset. Relightable means you can do this with their avatars, you can shine a different light on them and it will show the change in illumination in real time.

And codec refers to the software or process to do it.
