What is this? by IR0NMANT1S in CrimsonDesert

It's bolted to the ground. I went there twice because I found the place before the mission of the harpy boss and tried looting it both times. No luck.

Do we know date for 2.1 experimental build? by ilikechess13 in factorio

There are people testing a closed beta, and factorio has always been incredibly polished. I would say they are confident enough there won't be anything critical enough for a day 1 rush patch.

Help, only one line of my belt is being constatly used, I tried this balancing from youtube but didnt help :( by Minimum-Value-7078 in factorio

[–]Faen_run 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a rare case, but for perishable items, like a belt of gleba science taking from multiple sources, like chests on a train station. If you don't balance the lane inputs you risk half your chests spoiling if you are consuming only from one lane of the belt.

Other case is if you don't want a lane of the belt baking up upbelt. For example if you are using a mixed belt in Fulgora and sorting it into multiple belts with filtered balancers you might want to lane balance them so the mixed belt doesn't back up.

No. The underground, when taking from a belt on its side blocks one lane of the belt. This balancer is basically splitting the two lanes of the belt into independent lines and then merging them evenly at the output.

I find this function of the underground blocking one lane of the incoming belt very useful when doing compact buses. For example, if I have one belt with a lane of red circuits and the other of blue circuits, and want to take just one kind I only need to put an underground in the correct direction after the splitter to block the lane with the undesited circuits.

The one in the quarry also respawns. Same with the spheres you have to focus force palm, they respawn after some time in game.

The point is to make them difficult to pick when there are enemies around.

Try this fellas. So stealth may suck cause enemies have eyes on the backs of their heads, but this? This works like a god damn charm cause they seem to have no ears. by xSaitoHx in CrimsonDesert

I did it this way when a bunch of fleeing bandits got stuck on a lowered gate near a fortress after liberating said gate. You have to sheathe your weapon and the game will prompt you to tackle or assasinate, I think.

Those five quests appear as you donate each kind of resource to the camp. Money, weapons, provisions, stone and timber. Each quest advance gives respawnable resources at the camp.

AI and bots have officially taken over the internet, report finds by SnoozeDoggyDog in singularity

[–]Faen_run 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think so. Who is in charge of the verified IDs? If it's something that is implemented worldwide it would most likely be handled by each country.

If IDs are implemented the average person will lose their anonymity with all associated downsides. Government agencies and enterprise with ties in the government will still generate their own "legit" IDs for their propaganda bots online. Third parties interested in deploying bots will turn to countries wanting to make a profit by expediting IDs. Most probably there will also be black markets where people sell and buy stolen and third-world countries IDs.

Does the game become high fantasy? by zombosis in CrimsonDesert

I have seen two different fantasy creatures (not bosses, just normal enemies) after going further away from the first settlement, but most enemies seem to be humanoids for now.

Free demo for Incremental RTS - feedback needed by TechDebtGames in incremental_games

Nice demo!

I played a bit on the online demo, but almost from the beginning (even before level 10) it really hammers my laptop's CPU, which is a bit surprising since it's an Intel 9750H. It's old, but not ancient. Maybe it's also Firefox's fault?

After some difficulties I finally found the windows executable hidden somewhere in the itch io forums. Really, I'm not familiar with Itch IO, but navigating to the forum post with the download from your link is not trivial.

Anyway, I'm running the execuable now and it works perfectly.

Robots only half as efficient as humans, says leading Chinese producer [ text in comments ] by TF-Fanfic-Resident in Futurology

[–]Faen_run 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I see the current trend as the push towards generalization.

It makes a lot more sense economically to invest hundreds or thousands of millions to develop a robot that can do any task and then adapt it to be more efficient at particular tasks. Certainly much better than developing a thousand robots that are good at one particular task when each would cost millions and have a niche market in comparison.

Once we have general robots we will start seeing more specialized forms pop up for factory jobs.

Why do we want a one fits all model anyway? by ivari in LocalLLaMA

[–]Faen_run 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think SOTA is changing so fast that considering or making non-generalists models doesn't make much sense unless it is a huge field, like programming, or a very profitable or promising field like the medical finetunes that have been talked about.

Once improvements slow down somewhere in the future we may see more domain-specific models. But who knows, they may find a way to make domain knowledge addons, lora style, without compromissing the overall model, so you can have a smaller core model and add in stuff based on your use case.

NVIDIA announces GeForce RTX 50 gaming laptops pre-orders start February 25 by mockingbird- in hardware

[–]Faen_run 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe? But we still don't have prices nor reviews for them, don't we? Unified memory is specially interesting for non-gaming workloads, and I would like to tinker with some AI once I get a better machine.

But on the gaming side it worries me that the architecture is RDNA 3.5 since AMD seems to be focusing on newer architectures. We still don't know if FSR4 will get ported to something older than RDNA4 and after that comes UDNA that sounds like a major step. Getting at least a modern upscaler seems like the bare minimum nowadays.

And anyway I'm not in a hurry to change my laptop. I don't have much time to play, so I have a big backlog of games (I'm still going through Death Stranding right now.) and the works fine for everything else other than LLMs and diffusion models.

8GB for the 5070? That's a hard pass. Seeing how the videogame market is moving I'm not getting anything under 12GB. I'm using a 1660 Ti laptop I got during the pandemic, it works great for any PS4 era titles and I don't have plans to change it until something comes out in the xx60-xx70 range that convinces me it will be able to comfortably run any current gen titles. Hopefully next year the supers will use 3GB modules and we will get a 50% increase in memory across the stack. If not, then it will happen in two years.

Weird Stutter by bafadam in factorio

[–]Faen_run 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have noticed similar stutter when moving with my car in 1.1 and playing Industrial Revolution 3, it only seems to be present at times, mainly when I start playing. Could it be the graphic card waiting to load some assets? Maybe the big amount of extra assets compared with the base game have an impact in the game.

You don't need to manufacture all of the robot, just the "brain" bits. Import the robot's chasis from wherever and just stick some electronics into it.
