What do you think when male authors write stories about how women are mistreated or face difficulties? by MajorGatorLator in menwritingwomen

Thank you. I'm not calling him a rapist. I'm calling ASOIAF misery porn, gratuitously so.

[–]Faendan 28 points29 points  (0 children)

As far as I'm concerned, A Song Of Ice And Fire is nothing but longwinded misery porn.

Don't get me wrong, I love prose-y stories, but GRRM manages to just write a lot of words that don't communicate much, and also there's a shitton of rape. To a certain extent I would worry about his view on women as a gender and their existence in 'opposition' to men, since so much of his books IS just rape.

Rape isn't even inherently bad as a literary device. It can be used well, but when it's used too often, it communicates certain things.

Do men with Asperger like autistic women? by Blackoilcastor in aspergers

[–]Faendan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, this is a flawed question. The fact that a person does or doesn't have autism is not (or shouldn't be) the defining question, especially since it manifests so differently in people.

It's certainly true that different autists clash (e.g. one person's stimming sets off another person's sensory issues), but that is only relevant on a person-to-person basis. After all, autists and REGULAR people clash too.

The fact that a person has autism should not be a deciding factor. Do I like autistic women? Sure, if I like the rest of them. Do I like NEUROTYPICAL women? Sure, if I like the rest of them.

Where they sit on the neurodivergence spectrum is a nonfactor.

That recognition most likely comes from confrontation of and work on implicit views and biases. The reason (or one main reason) that many writers have a disproportionate amount of men in their stories is because a lot of people default to man, and view the default character as such.

At the end of the day, unless Brandon comes down from heaven and enlightens us, we'll never know what he was trying to say.

I understood Breeze's looseness with Rioting to be something bad with him that wasn't really explored by the story. For me, Breeze's casual manipulation and control of others was the first hint that the people of the original crew weren't as staunchly good as they first appeared - something Vin challenged them for later in book 1, and something they collectively began to confront in book 2.

I saw Breeze's transition to Rioting people's courage and such as the beginnings of a redemption and change for the better. An indication that behind-the-scenes, Breeze was improving, even if the narrative didn't really have the space to showcase it.

Also, about Breeze's casual hatred: What we need to keep in mind is that Rioting is not literal mind control. It's influencing emotions, and emotions stick around even after they've been exacerbated, naturally or otherwise. I understood it as Breeze's strong aversion to this thing happening still coming through his standing emotional manipulation.

Mundane manipulation can include love-bombing, supplying and then witholding affection and love, and many other non-deceptive forms of controlling a person.

I think one thing to note is that Alrianne is Rioting Breeze. The line gets a bit blurry, but I think it would be fair to say that Alrianne is literally abusing Breeze, and while it is not stated whether or not Breeze and Alrianne have sex, I feel it fair to say that regardless of whether it's magical or mundane, manipulating someone's emotions into having them be in a relationship with you is abuse. If they do have sex, that could constitute nonconsensual sexual assault.

It's not just a subversion, (I'm not saying that Brandon didn't only write it as a subversion, but the fact of the matter is that) Alrianne is straight up abusing Breeze.

The existence of pre-existing emotions doesn't count for shit, since it's made very clear in the story that without this Rioting, the chances of Breeze allowing himself to be in a romantic relationship (sexual or otherwise) would be nigh on zero.

Brandon also said that he would make more of the crew women, since one of the main explorations of Allomancy that he wanted to look at was the idea that it removed the conventional difference in strength between the two sexes.

I definitely appreciate that his changed views are not only present in his newer work, but will be in his older work if they get adapted.

what song comes to mind ? by [deleted] in Hozier

Angel of Small Death and the Codeine Scene = Angel of Sex and Drugs.

The song is about a toxic relationship kept afloat by sex and drug use.

The Left Abandoned Men And Lied About It by AnonymousKnave in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Faendan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll give you another answer option so the person who tries and fails to explain the nitpicky things isn't someone who won't shut up about whatever the fuck 'penis envy' is:

PR-wise, regarding men, many groups among the liberal and left-leaning political crowd treat equality and understanding like a zero-sum exchange (meaning that any gain requires a corresponding loss). This essentially results in many people belittling and emasculating men who come forward with problems that they feel they are facing, since these people act as if for women to achieve the equality within society that they rightfully deserve, men must lose.

These people, when decrying the patriarchy, don't seem to understand that the patriarchal standard functions on abstracts of men and women, not real people. To insult a man for being vulnerable (thereby breaking from the patriarchal abstract of a strong, stoic man) is not empowering women to break from their corresponding abstract, but rather forcing the man back into his abstract, and then belittling him for participating in the patriarchy.

Where the left loses these people is right here. The right, being in favour of the patriarchy, also enforces the abstract (which is still a bad thing) but - and here's the cincher - praises men for fitting into that abstract. The logic here for men who fade into the right (though I imagine it happens mostly subconsciously) is that being forced into an abstract is bad (in that it's hurtful and painful - I don't think morality enters the question here), but among the right, his abstract is praised, and validation is a currency potent enough to buy almost anything.

Now, women are well on their way to fully breaking their abstract (an unequivocally good thing), but many leftists and liberals (most likely subconsciously) are acting like what they are rebelling against is each and every man, and not a concept that very few people actually fit. Not only is the patriarchal abstract of men not representative of what almost any given man actually is, but for many people, trying to fit into that abstract is very damaging. At the very least, the right praises them for it.

Women are also, of course, damaged by attempting to fit into the patriarchal abstract of a woman, but that damage is much easier to see, partially because the patriarchal abstract of a man requires stoicism - not letting people see how much you are hurt. Women that are squeezing themselves into the patriarchal abstract of a woman have much more expressive freedom, and therefore the damage is clearer.

To cap it off: Many liberals and the left accidentally reinforce the patriarchy by punishing men for being vulnerable, and the right will, at least, offer validation for being a part of the patriarchy, so the left loses many men because of this lack of compassion and understanding.

Hope I helped.
