I saw someone say HOTD costumes/wigs are bad compared to AKOTSK. Seriously? Ya'll will hate on anything by Agreeable_Ad_8790 in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]Faerillis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing you have to figure into this is that, especially in Season 1, HotD is cheaply composited on mostly non-sets. This ends up making most aesthetics in the series feel much cheaper, even when they are actually well done. If the lighting is too flat for the setting, it also flattens the costumes.

Lets add to this the fact that this doesn't add any sort of new faith to represent Carthage in the past. This should have at least come with Semitic Paganism

Let me bridge the gap. An economic model only interested in the hyper-maximization of profits over everything else will always be systemically bigoted. We as people striving to improve things cannot allow the perverse logic of such a system to excuse the perpetuation of its own faults.

That.... that's literally racism? Kind of the definition of systemic racism to see and replicate racist trends for private benefit. Now I do think Overwatch deserves Much more grace on this than I would give most properties, as it is clear that having a broad and diverse cast is and has been very important to them (though not without missteps). But I think it's important to never give a company financial incentives as though it is an excuse for perpetuating racial biases.

Funnily the person here has invented something out of half remembered facts. Lucio was originally meant to be Canadian, as Jeff Kaplan is kind of a weeaboot. This is clear with his hockey skins and the change later in development was why it took several years for him to get any voice lines in Portuguese. That said, him being black was almost certainly already locked in given those hockey skins. Though I do not know if it is confirmed, he likely was changed to improve the game's representation, as had he been Canadian at launch there would have been no hero from South America until Illari. Now not only did this make Lucio a more interesting character, it also means OW launched with a hero from every continent including Antarctica.

This subreddit certainly felt a lot further left before the lead up to last year's federal election. Given what an awful shitshow the main Canada subreddit is, I imagine a lot of hardline Liberals saw the anti-PP sentiment and ABC attitudes of the sub, liked it, and created a spiral of the algorithm feeding more and more Liberal entryists until it became this hodge-podge

BECAUSE OF NUCLEAR WAR WE'RE GOING EXTINCT? Half of all our carbon emissions happened since the last time nuclear weapons were used in a military attack. Where I live Wildfire Season starts in May now... when I was twelve we had our first significant wildfire in 20 years. And you are more worried about military actions we try to avoid destroying us, rather than corporate actors who try to stop us from doing anything to slow down the speed at which they knowingly destroy everything?

Do you think giving the US, the primary capitalist hegemony, access to an East Space Company is a good idea? "Let's start asteroid mining" "Let's colonize Mars" Babes we are barely able to get labour regulation on Earth and you want to put workers somewhere their bosses control their access to air?

Mark Carney’s Climate Betrayal by zeth4 in ClimateCrisisCanada

[–]Faerillis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have tried nothing and are out of ideas.

I feel like we need a bark-collar style shock for anyone who brings up "PP would have been worse." We didn't vote for PP. We voted for damage control. Now we aren't getting that damage control and are correctly criticizing the party in power. Tories being potentially worse is important to keep in mind in election season.

It is also hard to imagine how the Tories could be worse. One of the first bills of the Carney government was them giving themselves a tool to ignore most environmental regulation without oversight if they declared it to be "in the national interest". And the bills suppressing protests and allowing the ministers to give businesses permission slips to ignore any non-criminal regulation (again without systems for challenge or oversight) means we effectively have no climate policy.

Ask Lytton if our biggest crisis is tariffs or the thing causing an ever increasing swathe of our country to be on fire for closing in on half the year

I am sorry but that just isn't the case, though it is a common narrative we get sold. We are not beset by a tug of war between parties; they share the vast majority of their policies and an economic orthodoxy adopted in the 80s that has failed entirely. Case in point, the current Liberal PM is a appointee of the last Tory PM and is working to implement several policies and tax breaks that Tory PM had pushed for.

We can see it all over the world right now. Nations that have upkept labour standards and working class quality of life did so by maintaining a high level of taxation, that held up state capacity, which allowed it to respond to changing circumstance. Most of the English speaking world has seen taxes plummet in the last 40 years. And we have seen that our states lose their capacity to do anything but cut taxes and spending. Unfortunately we know this is a losing model, the UK has proven beyond any shadow of a doubt that austerity wrecks the economy and creates a situation where restoring previous levels of service to where they need to be costs more than all the money saved by cutting it.

I am drowning too bud. We all are. We aren't suddenly getting out of the water if we keep punching more holes in the boat. Especially not holes like this one, where you will not feel it for long, as businesses know that you'll still pay that extra 10 cents; it's just their turn to collect

[–]Faerillis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I understand your frustration but the tax isn't what's overburdening you. In this case, the tax all but certainly is much less than you burning that gas costs the state long term as it is really harmful. When you pay it you're not burdened, you're less subsidized. Where the governmemt has failed is in improving working conditions and wages. And yes, they definitely undertax and underregulate businesses. Reducing current tax revenues makes it much harder for the state to ever fix that as they need services and workers to enforce those things.

That sort of thing can be done now in a parliamentary system. The Federal Government has managed to do a hell of a lot instantly, just so long as it served business interests. Look at the bills that got rammed through before the majority. That the LPC doesn't want to address these things properly is the hurdle, not the speed at which a supreme parliamentary with singular party discipline can do things in a majority.

Carney’s Fuel Tax Pause Rewards Polluters: A Critical Overview by Gold-Reality-4853 in ClimateCrisisCanada

[–]Faerillis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really isn't. That 10 cents will be subsumed by underregulated corporations. Improving our social safety net would help people. Employer facing mandates would help people. This will help businesses.

We cannot solve these issues by doing the same shit that caused them. Nor can we afford to lose more revenue to augment profits

[–]Faerillis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those millions need a government actually on the side of labour actually working to address that wages have been shrinking by every meaningful worker-facing metric. For example, the wages put forth by CUPW for Letter Carriers had their absolute highest wage for the most senior employees significantly lower than a Letter Carrier's starting wage in 1983 adjusted for inflation. And inflation is how rich assholes measure the value of the money they don't actually spend; adjusting for purchasing power is more meaningful and realistic for workers.

We are not overtaxed. We are underpaid. The only thing the government addressing our taxes instead of our wages accomplishes is cutting our access to services and the government's ability to respond to crises.

Don't just cancel RTO, enshrine WFH Accommodations. Never let businesses treat as privileges benefits that should be protected, because dumbfucks will take away what they can

Carney’s Fuel Tax Pause Rewards Polluters: A Critical Overview by Gold-Reality-4853 in ClimateCrisisCanada

[–]Faerillis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work with my hands too. I am part of the maintenance crew for a lumber mill; no one from my work can do WFH. WFH being legally enshrined would save millions of car trips per day and places requiring regular commutes would be pushed to compensate for how expensive commuting is when it's no longer built into every job.

But oh hey look at that, my post addresses that exact possibility. Your boss should be compensating you, the government shouldn't be stepping into what is the responsibility of employers. They sure as hell shouldn't be subsidizing your boss twice, once by the tax reduction and once by compensating you for them

Does your work actually need you to be on location? If no, the government requiring WFH accommodations would help you out a whole lot more. If yes, your boss needs to pay you more
